MY REVIEW

Everything about Deadly Catch by E Michael Helms talks to me, from the cover to the title to the setting on the US Gulf Coast to the murder mystery inside.

Mac McClellan had retired from the military and as he sat in the boat, fishing, and thinking, is this what my life will be like now…

“Thought I’d finally hooked my ‘gator’ trout…”

Kate, his love interest, works at the marina and knows her fishing.

Sheriff Bo, what other name would he have in the south, is a bully with a bad attitude. I can see him now, smirking, drawing his own conclusions before the evidence is even collected.

In a small town, everyone knows everyone and all their business, but Mac’s peeps love him and stand by him.

Small fishing villages, oysters, romance, lighthouses, gators, fried green tomatoes, drugs, corruption, murder and mystery are only a few of the things this story will share. I love that E Michael Helms mentions the stingray shuffle. I also have done the dance and anyone who has visited the Gulf Coast will know what he means. It’s those small details that make me want more of Mac.

I loved riding the waves with him, feeling the warm sun on my face, the wind caressing my body, having cocktails at the Green Parrot. Actually, I believe I live this life, so it’s very easy to walk in his shoes, except when it comes to murder. I haven’t hooked a dead body…yet. 😆

I thought I knew where this story was going, but planned on enjoying it anyway. Just because it’s predictable, doesn’t mean it can’t be a great read. I figured this was a cozy mystery, fun and easy reading. BUT…E Michael Helms caught me offguard when I was only a quarter of the way in. The direction of the story changed and it isn’t so cozy any more.

Summer is the perfect time to read this fantastic mystery series…so come one…let’s take a ride on Highway 98. Just follow the dead bodies…

I was born in Georgia way back in the last century but grew up and lived most of my life on the Gulf Coast of Florida in Panama City (beautiful beaches, girls galore–ah, the memories!). In 2004 my wife and I moved to the Upstate region of South Carolina in the shadows of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, a land of stunning vistas and numerous waterfalls.

I’ve been traditionally published since 1990 when my Vietnam War memoir, The Proud Bastards, launched. TPB chronicles my time as a combat U.S. Marine in 1967-68. It’s still in print after all these years, currently with Simon & Schuster/Pocket. I’ve since written a few novels in different genres. I’m also working on a collection of “Dinger, PI” short stories that are being published on Motive Means Opportunity, a crime/mystery blog I share with two other writers of the same ilk. Currently I’m writing the Mac McClellan Mystery series which is set along the coast of the Florida Panhandle where I grew up.

    • With a promo like that, I want to see it. I have never been to a bad beach, just some aren’t as good as others. 🙂

    • I’m with ya Peggy. I have walked on that beach. The only black beach I have ever seen. It was eerie.

    • Well, Darby, I wish for you to make it there. I am lucky enough to have visited. Thought I would want to live in California, but quickly changed my mind. I knew it had to be Florida.

    • Hi D. How’s it going? I haven’t been to St John, but I have been to St Thomas, Tortola and several other Caribbean Islands. I have to say that the Gulf Coast of Florida and the Caribbean are my favorite places to visit.

  11. I’ve never been to a beach off the east coast, but I like to Imagine the ones on the Pacific are beautiful. Definitely Hawaii from what I have heard, maybe Bali aswell.

    • I’ve been to Hawaii and it was everything I thought it would be. I only saw two islands and I know each one is known for something special, so given the chance I would visit them all. And Bali…just the name plants all kinds of tropical images in my head and I want to be there. 🙂

  13. Hmm. A beach anywhere in the world…I don’t know. There are so many places I’d like to go to. I enjoy beaches, of course, but if I could choose whether to go to the beach or a woodsy place, I’d go to the woods.

    • I have a passion for trees, so I can see why you would love the woods, but I am a water girl, so the beach is always my first choice. Thanks for dropping in Chrys.

    • Hi Chrys! I grew up in Panama City, FL on the beautiful panhandle coast. If you drive about fifteen or twenty miles north, you’ll find the hilly (for FL) Econfina valley with beautiful, spring-fed Econfina Creek running swiftly through it to the bay and Gulf. Along Econfina Creek are numerous clear springs that remain a constant 68-72 degrees year round. It’s a paradise, with beautiful hardwood forests and those springs bubbling out of the surrounding limestone. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s like swimming in an aquarium. The water is crystal clear, and the springs are numerous. If you ever get that way, check it out! The only problem now is the crowds. Oh, how I long for the days when very few people knew about the place. So, there are beautiful beaches and woodlands all within a short drive of each other.     • I do love saying that, Bora Bora. Never been there, but if it’s a beach it’s always on my list. I love Cocoa Beach too, but the Gulf side is still my favorite. Thanks for stopping in Dii.

    • Cocoa??? Nah, I much prefer Bourbon Beach. I can’t divulge its secret location, but I’m sure you’d love it. There are places along it with rocks, and also no rocks. And the water is indescribable! 🙂

  17. I’d love to go back to Ipanema Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It’s the first beach I was able to go to on my own when I lived there as a teenager.

  20. The beaches of Mississippi are some of the cleanest and sureal sights, especially off Gulf Port. Last time I was there was right before my dad died 3 years ago with my kids. Must go back soon. Made great memories. – Michelle

    • I make many visits to Biloxi and Gulfport…but only have taken pics of the beaches. The scenery is awesome and when you see the pics, you know where you are…most of the time. 🙂

    When it comes to beaches, I love the Caribbean. I’ve never been to Hawaii and would love to give that a go too 🙂

    • I have been to Hawaii and it was everything I thought it would be. Would love to go back, but the Caribbean is still my fave.

  24. My favorite beach is a tiny beach near Half Moon Bay California. I can’t remember the name of it but we go camping there almost every year. It is a small camping area with Sand Dunes and a beautiful beach that rarely has anyone there. It is one of my favorite places. Crkrjack77@icloud.com USA
