GUEST POST

I am excited to have K D Rose here to tell us about her books covers.

I am a *cover girl* so I love to hear how an author feels about their covers and the amount of work they put into the covers themselves.

So…take it away K D.

K.D. Rose Covers

Covers are one of my favorite things to do for my books. I love looking over stock photos and imagining covers that could work! For example, I literally have the most wonderful cover photo right now that I want so bad to put out but have no book for it!

My published books are a variety of cover work. Some of them I did myself, some I got from cover designers and some are half-in-half. Half-in-half means that I found a great photo and could do most of the design work but ran into a problem that my poor tech skills could not overcome so I went to a designer for that one issue or to smooth out the look. And really, to be honest, in most cases the eye of a professional designer is so much better. They just have the experience needed for the best layout. My eye is for picking great photos and that’s about it.

So here are some of my books and experiences:

Heavy bags of soulMy very first book. I worked with a talented graphic designer I know who happens to also be a talented writer, Jeremy Parker. I had very strong ideas of what I wanted for this journey to uncover the truth told via poetry, dialogues, short stories and essays. He totally got it and produced what is still my favorite graphic designer cover.

.

.

I am poetry in motionHere is one of the covers I produced myself. The book is full of pictures like this, picked out exclusively to go with the poems they are set to. The book itself was written for teenage girls especially for empowerment during those years when feeling empowered can be so hard. I still love this cover and it’s my favorite of those I’ve done myself.

.

.

Erasing ShadowsHere’s a cover with an interesting story. This book was originally acquired by a publisher. It is book one of a YA/NA paranormal series. I already had a cover picked out but once it went with the publisher, their cover artist made the cover you see here. Then the publisher went out of business. I retained the cover artist so cover the book was now known by could stay. That cover artist is the talented Fiona Jayde.

.

.

image004Here is my original cover that I had made for that book- this is one of the half-in half’s I talked about above. Part me, part designer— the talented owner of Amygdala Designs. Very different feel isn’t it. That is the great thing about licensing your own pictures and obtaining your own covers. Most likely I will use it for book 2 of the series which will only require small changes to the cover.

.

.

For my three new releases out right now, one of which this blog post is for, simplicity was key. One was published by Three Worlds Press who used the cover I already had set for the book.

The Brevity of Twit looks like this. It’s a humor book about communication on Twitter.

 The brevity of twit

Anger’s Children is all red with a bullet effect over the tag line.

Angers children

Last, but not least, A Taste For Mystery went through several transitions, including getting a lot of feedback from wonderful authors on groups I belong to. Here is the final cover:

BookCover_ATasteForMystery

I’m happy with the way all my covers have come out. It helps when as an author I get to participate in the process. It gets the creative juices flowing plus I gain valuable experience from those who know design. All in all a win-win.

Thank you so much for taking the time to put together such an informative guest post, K D. I loved learning about all your covers and see that you strive for some of the things that grab me…simplicity being one of my favorites. I think a simplistic cover takes a lot of creativity to express the story inside.

I hope you enjoyed your visit, K D and I look forward to having you here again.

I love the cover in its simplicity. The light and shadows make me look a little closer for any hidden clues. Do you see any?

A Taste For Mystery (Two Novellas)

by K.D. Rose

BLURB

A Taste For Killing

Mystery and Romance blend together when competing detectives Carolyn Woods and Jack Heart are both hired to solve a murder, only to realize they are working the same case. To complicate things, Carolyn and Jack have an on again, off again relationship. Then there is Evan Jones, a handsome architect— but he’s also a suspect.

Can Carolyn solve the case as more and more murders pile up? Will her relationship with Jack hinder their investigations? And what about Evan Jones? He seems like the perfect man, but could he actually be the murderer?

One thing is for sure: someone close to Carolyn and Jack has a taste for killing.

A Taste For Danger

Jack Heart drinks to excess daily. His apartment is in shambles, he’s isolated himself from all his friends, and he stumbles to the couch every night to sleep off an alcoholic stupor. All that changes when he receives a phone call with a job offer from a man he barely knew. Asked to go undercover in an elite business, Jack is thrown into the deep end and hasn’t a clue what he’s in for— or looking for— until he starts asking questions.

Suddenly, Jack must track down an embezzler inside a swanky corporation riff with politics, game-playing, and treachery. The deeper Jack goes, the more dirt he finds. Can this out-of-place detective survive and still crack the case? Not to mention some of women he works with have plans for him—plans that are way more than he bargained for.

One thing is certain: Jack’s taste for danger will take him to the edge of disaster.

EXCERPT

Jack made sure to get his parking pass from the secretary for tomorrow. He wasn’t made of money, and today was gonna cost him twenty bucks. Cheryl followed him out, and they took the elevator down together. Jack thought this little get-together might be a good chance to interview her. What was she head of again? He couldn’t remember. He’d have to ask her. His instincts told him to wait until the bar.

Jack made sure to put his briefcase in the trunk. Cheryl brought a satchel with her and sat up front. She directed him out. Apparently she lived not too far away from him, although in the city, even a block of traffic could turn a short drive into an hour. Stuck in rush hour, Cheryl made small-talk.

“So you dined with the big cheese today?” She opened.

“Word gets around fast.”

“Yes, anytime someone from HQ comes, everyone knows it. Knows to be on their toes.”

“I see.”

“What they can’t figure out is whether to be on their toes around you.”

Now he got it. She was on a scouting mission for the office. He wondered if they drew straws. “I’m just a nobody,” he said.

“I doubt that,” said Cheryl, “or the Deputy VP wouldn’t have taken such an interest in you. So what are you here to do?”

She said it smiling and casual, but underneath he could feel the shark in her.

“I’m not allowed to discuss the details,” he said.

“Oh my,” said Cheryl and raised her hands as if she was being held up. “Never mind. I don’t want to get you in trouble.”

“Thanks,” he said, then stayed quiet. She didn’t try to pry anymore. He wondered if she would after a few drinks. Wait. That was his plan. Who was playing who here?

BOOK BEGINNINGS

IT HAD TO START SOMEWHERE…

The egg hatched, releasing the young Dermacentor vaiabilis larva upon an unsuspecting world. Wriggling away from the nest into the surrounding grass, it had no thoughts, no plans, no aspirations. Those were the burdens of more evolved creatures. Only one desire occupied the tiny ganglion of nerves that served as the wood tick brain. It was tie to feed.

Author Bio

033Scott lives in the Midwest with his wife and their boxer-pitt mix, Frank. He’s a horror, urban fantasy, and dark comedy fan, and also enjoys beer, bowling, karaoke, and rooting for the underdog. After not nearly enough consideration, he decided to write about the things he enjoys. The result was the Monsters in the Midwest series.

Description of the Book

When Dallas is recruited by an ancient order of monster hunters, he’s more than happy to sign up. The self-proclaimed Hero of Trappersville did kill a bloodthirsty vampire, after all. As far as Dallas is concerned, monsters are monsters, and they have no place in Wisconsin.

Or do they? And does Dallas really get to choose which side he’s on?

Excerpt

“You’re needed.”

The nasally voice cut through the whiskey fog, rousing Dallas from his stupor. Before he could put meaning to the words, turn his head and identify the speaker, the person was gone.

“Haven’t seen him b-before,” Stanley commented.

“Stanwee?” Dallas slurred. “Whend’choo get here?” Stanley had hung around with Dallas and Herb for years. Wiry, fidgety, and a terrible bowler, he had rounded out their backwoods version of the Three Musketeers, or more like Two Musketeers and That Stuttering Guy Who Claimed He Was Abducted by Aliens. Since Herb’s death, he’d been Dallas’s near-constant drinking companion.

“J-just now,” Stanley replied. “Saw you talking to that guy,” he said, pointing toward the door.

Dallas’s bleary gaze followed Stanley’s finger, and he locked eyes with a stranger across the bar. The two considered each other for a moment before the man nodded and walked outside.

With a shrug and a short belch, Dallas returned his attention to Stanley. His friend was scrutinizing a business card, a perplexed look layered on top of the usually perplexed look he wore as a matter of course, making him look especially… Dallas groped for the right word… perplexed.

“Crap on a cracker, Stanley. You looking for the cure for cancer on that thing? Give’er here and let me help you with the big words.” Swiping the card, he read out loud.

“Find us. You’re needed.”

Dallas borrowed Stanley’s perplexed look and tried it on for a moment. He’d heard that before. Recent like. A nasally voice. For some reason, the face of the man he’d just been trading looks with popped back into his mind. The voice he recalled seemed like it would fit the man’s face. Gaunt, squinty eyes, straight brown hair slicked back from a dark widow’s peak, scraggly hairs making a go at becoming a goatee. Yeah, it could’ve been that guy, but why was he talking to Dallas? What did they talk about? Why leave the card? A closer look popped the tab on a deeper mystery. Why leave a card telling him to find someone but not leave an address or a number? It was a mystery, pure and simple, and there were few things Dallas hated more than mysteries.

“Guy must have a busted furnace,” Dallas reasoned out loud, causing Stanley’s head to bob in assent. “Jackass didn’t leave a number though. How the hell am I supposed to help if he didn’t leave me a number?”

“Something’s on the b-back,” Stanley offered, a touch of drama coloring his tone. Unlike Dallas, Stanley liked mysteries. He had every season of Murder, She Wrote, Columbo, and Veronica Mars, and took great pleasure in rewatching them and solving the crimes before Angela Lansbury, Peter Falk, or Kristen Bell.

Dallas turned the card over, and sure enough, there was more.

TURN 2 2 AT 2 2 2

Dallas read the line once, then twice, trying to make it make sense. Sometimes, the right amount of alcohol allowed for just the kind of out-of-the-box thinking a riddle like this might need to solve. Sadly, this wasn’t one of those times. This time, the amount of alcohol Dallas had imbibed didn’t help him to think around corners, so to speak. It just helped him get more upset in less time. A win from an efficiency standpoint perhaps, but otherwise a complete loss.

“The hell does that mean? Well, I guess the jackass will just have to freeze.” With a grumbled curse, Dallas crumpled the card and dropped it on the bar. Slapping Stanley on the back, he stumbled toward the door and into the gathering night, the strange man and even stranger card already forgotten.

Aidan Montgomery hadn’t been prepared for Amelia Bradbury to walk in and then out of his life. He also hadn’t expected to find the powerful magic hidden deep within him for the last nineteen years, but he’s embracing it — finding more control and more answers every day. Now, with the help of Amelia’s best friend, Bethany, Aidan is on a quest to understand his destiny and find Amelia.

Amelia decided to stand by her duty, which meant walking away from her first chance at love. Trapped in Cresthaven at the Queen’s mercy, she spends her days with Micah — an ally she still holds at arm’s length — struggling to manage her heartbreak while keeping her mind focused on the task at hand. As she continues to unlock the secrets of the Keeper power, Queen Julia’s true motives reveal themselves, forcing Amelia to decide, yet again, how much she’s willing to sacrifice.

Amelia grew up in a world of half-truths. She knows she’s an Elder but has no idea what that means. Her father reminds her daily that she must maintain control but he refuses to explain why. Even worse, she’s betrothed to the prince of the Immortals and she doesn’t even know his name.

Finally breaking free to live a few normal years at a community college, the last thing Amelia expects is to find her best friend in a cheeky Southern girl and to fall for a self-assured human who sees her for who she is and not what she’ll be.

As she learns more about herself, Amelia realizes the line between love and duty is a thin one. As her power continues to increase exponentially and her questions are slowly answered, Amelia must make the ultimate choice. The question is, will her head or her heart win the battle?

Fantastic Giveaway for State of Alliance by Summer Lane

StateOfAllianceBlitzBanner1

fundinmental would like to welcome Summer Lane and State of Alliance.

Thanks so much for the Guest Post, Summer.

I love learning the extents an author will go to do their research.

The Carmel Mission and State of Alliance

By Summer Lane

When I was writing State of Chaos in 2013, I did a lot of hands-on research to get a feel for what Cassidy Hart would be experiencing when she began fighting with a guerilla-war rebel group. I went to a range and took a rifleman course (the longest day of my life! I’ve got the scars to prove it!) to make sure I wrote about weaponry and marksmanship as accurately as possible. What’s my point? I love research, and if I’m going to write about something, I’m going to get as close to the subject as possible.

For State of Alliance, I went to Monterey to research geographical locations for the fifth installment of Cassidy’s story. One of the places that really resonated with me was the Carmel Mission, perhaps the most famous mission on the California coastline. Father Junipero Serra – the Father of the California Missions – is buried here. It is a gorgeous, deeply spiritual place. I connected with it. I loved the atmosphere and the architecture. As I visited, I saw Cassidy coming here for an integral part of the story. I took about five hundred pictures, stowed them away, then scurried home. The Carmel Mission makes a lovely cameo in State of Alliance, providing Cassidy Hart with something important that she’ll need to survive the storyline!

Look at that gorgeous cover.

I can only guess at what is to come.

Exclusive Cover Reveal & Giveaway~ Devil To Pay by Renee Bernard

VBT_TourBanner_DevilToPay

Welcome to my stop for Devil To Pay by Renee Bernard.

I love covers and am so excited that Renee is going to share her thoughts with us and she would LOVE it, if you shared your thoughts with her. So please, let’s show this USA Today Bestselling author some love and leave a comment on how covers affect you.

She has some questions below to help and she does reveal her humorous side. You don’t want to miss this!

Renee is also sharing an exclusive cover reveal of Devil May Care, the next story in her wickedly romantic comedy series.

I am honored, Renee.

GUEST POST

Ooh, let’s talk covers! I think it’s one of those wonderful make or break subjects that authors either love or dread (depending on the amount of control they have over those fateful images!) Every author has his/her favorite covers of their books but also a few they wish had never seen the light of day—much less hit their readers’ square between the eyes.

I had some great covers and was Very Lucky and I’m generally known for my historical romances but here is one of my old covers that makes me cry…

01_Ecstasy_Wears_Emeralds

I shouldn’t complain (everyone has the correct number of arms). Except that male model’s haircut is not even remotely close to being historically accurate for my hero. Sure, if he was a modern Navy S.E.A.L. but a doctor in the 1860’s… Let’s just say that the art department in NY let it slip that they’d dubbed this one the “Lucky Charms Cover” and let it go with that…but with traditional publishing, it’s so rare to have any power over what happens on your book cover. My editors would ask for physical character descriptions, suggestions, colors, you name it and I would have the illusion of having a voice/vote in the process but once they showed me what they had—the illusion ended. Small, tiny changes (hair color, etc.) were welcome but any hint of “why is she wearing a prom dress from the wrong century” was squashed.

Naturally, readers blame the author and wonder why they don’t know the difference between Regency and Victorian eras…or why the book they picked up based on a cover isn’t at all what they expected. It’s never fun and I try not to 02_Lady_Fallsthink about it too much for fear of being that growly, complaining person I never want to sit next to at luncheons.

So, when I started self-publishing my new historical novels, it was all about falling in love again with the notion that a cover could really be an extension of an author’s vision for their baby. I wanted something striking, non-traditional, where the heroine was the centerpiece with an artistic sensibility and Cora Graphics came through and took my breath away! Love Cora. She lives in Italy and is very glamorous…which apparently helps.

See the difference? The entire trilogy is out (and all three covers are gorgeous!) but I just wanted to have an example of the potential differences. And now with my contemporary paranormal romantic comedy, DEVIL TO PAY, I can be light, completely not-serious and frankly, step away from traditional layouts to let every reader imagine how the players will look…

03_Devil_To_Pay_3D

Teresa Spreckelmeyer did the cover for DEVIL TO PAY and I don’t think I’m going to let her go…and just for you, Sherry, as a Fundinmental Exclusive, here is a sneak peek at the draft cover for DEVIL MAY CARE!

04_Devil_May_Care

I still believe that covers make a difference and that first impressions to readers can mean a lot and can make the difference between picking a book up to check out the synopsis/story and decide if it’s a purchase or making a quick pass based on an amateur/cheap looking image that hints that all might not be well starting with page one. Covers can be brand builders as books from one author all have a similar look and feel, or just to help distinguish from one series or another. If they are too similar though, readers can’t tell at a glance if they’ve read it already or not and may mistake a new release for an old one. It’s a very real challenge to find the fine line between new and striking and alluringly familiar.

But I’d love to hear from your followers on this one. Do covers matter? Do they make you pay attention or do you ignore them? If an author is new to you, does the cover hold more weight? Do you like the book on your shelves to “match” a bit? Or does it make no difference at all and you’d pick it up if it had dancing wallabies on there—so long as the story was good?

Thanks so much for the wonderful post, Renee.

I will share my thoughts. I know you want to hear them. :mrgreen:

I will admit, I am a cover “whore”. I can be bought. Sometimes I see the cover and that is all I need. I pick it up or not. I will pick up almost any book with water or a tree. I know I have missed some good books because of the cover ~ it’s usually a man’s abs with no head.  😳 You know what I’m talking about. I understand a lot of authors may not have the luxury of choosing their covers, but COME ON publishers. I am so over the abs.

Would I be telling you too much if I said dancing wallabies (?), I’d probably pick it up. LOL I like critters.

What do you think? Will you pick it up, just because it has abs 🙄 or are you like me and demand more?

 Inquiring minds want to know.

BLURB

Workplace comedy is always fun but when the company in question in H.E.LLc (Hades Enterprises LLc) and your job is being Lucifer, let’s just say, there are some unique challenges beyond Casual Fridays and who keeps taking your lunch out of the break room. Even if Hell really is just a place where evil is tracked and analyzed in endless cubicles-no brimstone and not a human soul in sight-there’s no room for error. This Lucifer (who is the seventh unlucky archangel to get the position behind the black onyx desk) is about to have his entire world rattled when a very sweet and likable mortal woman crosses his path.

After all, angels can’t lie. And when Jayne Hamilton wants to know what he does for a living, all bets are off. Because “dating” isn’t exactly in the cosmic scheme of the Eternity Gambit, but Love… Well, Love is never really off the table.

Now, if Lucifer can just figure out how to win the girl and get himself fired, he’ll be one very very happy angel.

“Filled with sparkling wit and devilish charm, DEVIL TO PAY is a delightful visit to the Shangri-La of Hell!” — Erin Quinn, The Three Fates of Ryan Love, NYT Bestselling Author

“Only Renee Bernard could make dating Satan sexy as sin! Funny, fresh, irreverent and utterly adorable!” – Dakota Cassidy, National Bestselling Author

First book in the new Eternity Gambit series from USA Today bestselling author Renee Bernard. This is a romantic comedy series with an original paranormal twist that defies categorization and turns every notion of Heaven and Hell on its ear.

“You’re mental, right?”

“I think if we were having this conversation in a basement decorated with torn out newspaper articles, black-light posters and me drooling about how I have conversations with dogs and wear tinfoil underwear, you might have a case.” Luke deliberately glanced around the room, silently pointing out the lack of “mental” revealed by his beautifully appointed modern office and furnishings. If it weren’t for the black onyx desk, it would be easy to mistake it for an extraordinary executive’s digs. “I think we can rule out insanity—on both sides of this argument.”

“Right, since I’m not the one proclaiming to be the Prince of Darkness,” she said with a touch of sarcasm she couldn’t prevent. After all, even pretending to take him seriously made her consider that she might not be firing on all cylinders. Her hands were shaking, so she pressed them together as firmly as she could. Were crazy people like bees? Could they smell fear?   “Is it possible you’re just a very wealthy man in need of medication?”

“Sure. Anything is possible,” he conceded, his open smile disarming her as he was obviously beginning to genuinely enjoy the debate. “Jayne, I could be an eccentric billionaire intent on impressing you by pretending to be Lucifer.   Stranger things have happened.”

“Name one thing stranger than this.”

“Besides the fashion of the 80’s and people who resemble their dogs?”

SYNOPSIS

Book 1 in the Molly Maddison series

Molly Maddison grew up in a funeral home that unfortunately backed up to the largest Insane Asylum in the state. Very few understand what happens after death, Molly does. While other children were playing in the park with their living friends, Molly was in the cemetery playing with the dead. To say she is troubled is an understatement.

Now Molly has a new plan, to attempt to lead a normal life, and ban the contact with any of the dead. Realizing that she is madly in love with one of them was never part of that plan. However neither life or death ever go as planned and Molly is called upon to perform her role as the family Crypt Keeper…

Is she up for the task? Only time will tell.

CHAPTER 1

“Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere.” ~ Helen Gurley Brown

               The alarm blaring on the bedside table woke me out of the dead of sleep. “Ugh,” I groaned, picking up a pillow and chucking it at what I hoped was the general direction of the annoying tones. When the alarm didn’t cease I surrendered, cracking open one eye to read the time. I went from drowsy to full-out panic mode when my mind registered eight thirty-five p.m.“Holy Mother of God!” Flinging the blankets off the bed I vaulted forward, only to find that my left leg was tangled in the bed sheet and I went down knee first onto a kitchen chair. “Idiot, stupid ass monkey piece of shit!” I shouted the instant the pain registered. Wrenching my leg free and shoving the chair aside I sat down on the floor and assessed my injuries. I’d have a nice bruise on my knee and shin, otherwise, nothing serious. Then I remembered I was working on curbing my need to use profanity every other word and snapped the rubber band on my wrist twice, wincing at yet another sting of pain. I’d been reading this self-help book recently that swore by this technique. The wristband bad habit treatment is designed to take you out of your own head and snap you back into reality. The wristband treatment will act as a reminder to those with habitual undesirable occurrences that they need to overcome their bad behaviors. I wasn’t convinced in the method; however, if I ever planned on working with children my potty mouth needed to go.

Standing to my feet, I picked up the chair and walked it back into the dining room where it belonged. I should know better by now. The furniture being moved around the house, the dishes in the bathtub and all my frozen foods set out on the counters to spoil was a common occurrence in my tiny apartment these days. He was mad at me again. They all were. I’d left him…er, them. No, I wasn’t going there. I didn’t move over one hundred miles away to dwell on the past. “Never look back, Molly. The past is a wilderness of horrors.” I quoted my favorite line from the movie The Wolfman. I did, however, replace Lawrence’s name with my own. I would have gone a lot farther if it wasn’t for my younger brother still living at home there. I was always available for him, mostly. All right, I’d been a shitty sister but my intentions were honorable. Thankfully he didn’t have the curse. It skipped him and I was glad.

Suddenly I realized that the alarm was still going off in my bedroom. I made my way back into the room, which didn’t take longer than a few seconds since my apartment is a whopping seven hundred square feet that consisted of a tiny kitchen, living room/dining room combo, a bathroom that I could barely turn around in and bedroom. After shutting it off I began to dress in jeans and a black t-shirt that had Party like a rock star written across the chest. Being a no-frills kind of chick, jeans always seemed like the obvious choice for any and every occasion. I pulled my dark brown hair back into a ponytail and bent down to slip on my chucks.

“You aren’t seriously going to wear your hair like that, are you?” a voice behind me asked. Shrieking, I nearly jumped out of my skin again.

“Holy shit!” Turning around, I faced the intruder and narrowed my eyes at the young woman dressed in leather pants, biker boots that belonged to me and a red tank that read Bite Me! Her hair was dyed jet black with dark green chunky highlights today. The color was always changing but her razored-at-the-chin hairstyle was always the same. She stood there smirking at me with her hands on her hips. “Aren’t you a little too old to continue with these ridiculous pranks?” Not knowing her actual age, she and I had estimated it around twenty-four or so, the same as me.

She rolled her eyes and plopped down on my secondhand sofa that had seen far better days. “After all these years you should be used to it by now. I mean, really Molly, you’re too easy.”

“Jewels, I bruised the shit out of…” I snapped the band on my wrist. “I mean bruised the dickens out of my shin!” The past twelve years we’ve been friends she’d never told me her real name. I assumed it was Julie—hence “Jewels”—but wasn’t certain. I’d asked her a million times over the years, and she’d always reply with the same answer: My old name is as irrelevant as my past. That name died along with that part of my life. I didn’t agree with her; her past was obviously relevant. For the sake of our friendship I’d let it go.

She rolled her caramel-colored eyes and blew a giant bubble in the gum she was chomping on. When it popped she shook her head. “I don’t know anything about that.” She eyed the rubber band on my wrist. “What the hell are you doing to your wrist there? They locked people in solitary for less than that on my ward.”

Ignoring her reference to her institutionalization period because the mere thought of it made my heart hurt, I answered her question. “I’m trying to clean up my speech. No one will hire a pediatric behavioral therapist that swears every other word. I’d gotta run—I’m late for class. Don’t mess up my boots, they’re my favorites.” Snatching my sling bag off the back of the dining chair I went out the front door, closing it behind me.

The second I glanced back up, Jewels was standing next to me. “I thought you already got your master’s degree. Why are you still taking classes?”

Hurrying into the stairwell I replied, “I still have to take my state licensing exam. Besides, I like taking classes. There is something exceedingly comforting about losing yourself in textbooks.”

“I think this whole thing is stupid. You have a job waiting for you at home—you don’t need to put yourself through all of this.” Jewels mumbled behind me. She’d been pushing this “job at home” idea for the last few months and it wasn’t like her. She’d always been so supportive in the past. After descending five flights of stairs I was exhausted and considered joining some of the girls that I knew ran every morning for a whopping half a second, then reminded myself that I didn’t run.

“It isn’t stupid! You know this is what I’ve always wanted to do.” I continued into the lobby. “Thank you.” I nodded to the guy that held the door open for me to exit just as Jewels shot him a bird.

“Stop that!”

The smiling boy’s face was replaced with confusion. “I beg your pardon?”

“I’m sorry,” I pointed to a non-existent head set on my left ear. “Phone call.” His face relaxed. “Oh, no problem.” Smiling, he waved. “See ya around.” Jewels laughed, as she got a kick out of making me look like a lunatic. Something I should be accustomed to by now. It’s hard to function in a society when you can see and hear things that others cannot. I sometimes feel that I am not made of the same matter as others, and at other times I feel completely normal—whatever that means.

“Look, I have to go do this,” I whispered as I passed groups of students chatting around the campus lawn. Most of them would assume I was on the phone, so I didn’t need to be too concerned,; not like when I used to talk to her as a child. That was an entirely different story all together. “Catch up with me after, okay?” She didn’t say a word, just vanished, meaning she was pissed. Sighing, I continued on to class.

As usual the class had already begun. I slipped quietly into the small room and took a seat in the back. Going unnoticed wasn’t an option at this point. The sandy blond-haired professor with the most intelligent eyes I’d ever seen in my life was already knee deep in his lecture. I’d never forget the first day I saw him. I’d been on the lawn reading when he pulled up in his car. He had some sort of energy about him that caught my eye—well, that and a great ass. He’d made a point to stop and introduce himself to me. I’d nearly choked on my own saliva trying to formulate a coherent reply to the complicated question he presented me with: Hi, how are you today? I’m embarrassed every time I relive that day in my mind.

Professor Damon Night made direct eye contact with me without missing a beat during his presentation. He always made direct eye contact with me and I’d always had a hard time maintaining said eye contact. We’d met only a few times after our first awkward introduction, and after becoming completely-tongue tied around him repeatedly I made the determination that he was a detriment to my almost nonexistent ego. Therefore it had been my mission to avoid him at all costs during after school hours. Despite my efforts he seemed to be everywhere I was—in the library, at the cafés, and he shopped at the same markets. There was an embarrassing cart crashing incident at the market that I tried desperately to forget. Why he affected me in this way was beyond me. Yes, he was an attractive man and I was a healthy, lonely young woman in desperate need of male companionship, I thought while licking my lips as I took in his masculine frame. Strangely his eyes seemed to follow from the long distance separating us, confirming my need to find a boyfriend fast and stop having these fantasies.

Glancing away I whipped out my phone, opened my memo app and hit the record button. When I looked back up he was still staring at me with those dark green eyes that seemed to smolder with desire every time they devoured me. Damn my overactive imagination and my lusty fantasies. They were negatively affecting my brain function.

“He’s one hot piece of ass, huh?” Jewels whispered into my ear from the seat next to mine, then began noisily opening a bag of Walker potato chips, my favorite brand.

To my credit I didn’t jump this time. Looking down at my phone I whispered in the most annoyed tone I could muster, “You know I hate it when you show up in one of my classes. You swore you wouldn’t do it anymore.”

“No, as I recall I promised not to show up at any of your classes during finals, so obviously this situation does not apply.” She shoved a handful of chips into her mouth and nudged me with her elbow “So you hit that yet or what?”

Gritting my teeth I glanced back up, rubbing the tip of my nose with my hand to conceal my moving lips. “Dammit! How am I supposed to concentrate with you gabbing in my ear the entire time? And no, I haven’t hit that nor do I have any plans to do so. Now shut the hell up!” I whispered in the softest angry tone possible. She made a locking her lips motion, and after throwing away the key she pointed toward my arm. When I ignored her she elbowed me hard, shoving me forward in the seat. Nervously I glanced around to see if anyone had noticed. Thankfully it didn’t appear that anyone had. Before I could let out a sigh of relief the bitch did it again, and this time I nearly fell out of the chair. “Shit!” I shouted loudly. When I sat back up she was gone and the entire room had turned to stare at me.

Snatching my bag off the floor I did the only thing I could do in my current situation: I bolted, nearly hyperventilating in the process. Jewels was standing casually outside the room, dusting the crumbs off her shirt as if nothing was amiss. I would have ripped her a new one if the hall didn’t have other people milling around. Stomping off, I’m sure I had steam rising off my head because I was fuming.

“Don’t be that way Molly—I was only trying to help.” When I didn’t reply she proceeded to bribe me. “I brought you a case of Walker chips from my pop over to the UK last week, the variety pack. They’re in your pantry.” She was upset. I could hear it in her tone; nevertheless, I didn’t turn around. “Come on Molls, don’t be like that. This is hard for me. You and I have always had each other until this whole school thing. I’m trying to adjust, truly I am. Don’t be mad at me—you know I can’t handle it,” she pleaded. Softening, I glanced back at her. She looked so downtrodden that I just couldn’t stay mad. This was hard on her, I knew that, and it was hard on me too. She’d been a constant in my life for as long as I can remember. She’d been there for me always.

Crossing the parking lot, I moved over to a vacant bench and sat. This time of night no one would be out here and I would be able to speak to her freely without the prying eyes and ears of others. Staying mad at her had never been easy. “Did you bring the cookies as well?” I smirked, folding my arms. She grinned and a box of McVitie’s Caramel Biscuits appeared in her hand.

“Of course.” Taking them out of her palm, I ripped open the box and wrapper and took out a biscuit. She plopped down next to me and I extended the box toward her. Smiling, she also took one biscuit as well and we leaned against each other, munching on our snacks.

After swallowing I asked, “How were you trying to help me?”

She reached over and snapped the rubber band on my wrist. “You were cursing like a sailor in there.” I winced. “Oh, right.” “By the way, you do realize that hot ass is really into you?” she said around a mouthful of biscuit, wagging her eyebrows.

“No, he isn’t.” I took another nibble of mine. I couldn’t consume the massive amount of junk food Jewels could without it showing up on my ass the next morning. “Trust me, I know these things and that guy is definitely into you.” Uh oh. I turned and stared at her. “Don’t look at me like that, I haven’t been spying. You know I’m over that kind of shit.” She grinned. “It’s no fun if they don’t know I’m watching.”

“You better be.” I gave her a stern look. “Remember the last live guy you were in love with.” I did the finger quotes when saying the words in love. It lasted for less than two weeks but that had been enough time to do serious damage.

She blew out a breath. “Not this again.”

“Yes, this again. You drove the guy insane with all your writing on the mirrors in his bathroom and leaving little gifts for him. We’re lucky he bounced back after a little therapy. It is unnatural for someone dead to be in a relationship with someone living.”

She narrowed her eyes at me. “You should talk.”

Slumping back next to her I argued, “Why do you think I moved to Atlanta? I’m trying to get on with my life among the living. Besides, it is slightly different with me.”

She snagged another cookie. “True. And that rule doesn’t apply to us as friends.”

As much as I wanted to disagree with her and as much as I wanted her to try to get on with her life on that side, I couldn’t imagine not having her around. We’d been close since the day she’d wandered up onto our property. The poor thing didn’t even know she’d died. And I didn’t have the heart to tell her until weeks later, and it wasn’t until she’d tried to speak to other living kids our age that she noticed something was off. “No, not us as friends.”

BLOOD BROTHERS: Escape To Creeporia

by Dean C. Moore

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB
Fraternal twins are separated from birth, and raised to be assassins. They were never meant to meet. But even when kept apart, they’re just too powerful. Their paranormal abilities cease to be an advantage when they can no longer be controlled. So they are scheduled for cancellation.
Their paths cross before they can be taken out. It is only then that they discover the true depths of their betrayal. Not only are they stronger when they’re together, they’re half-breeds, sired by an all-powerful warlock.
The question is, are they strong enough even together to take him on now that he’s coming for them?
They have an ace up their sleeves they are not aware of. Drawn to the same kind of women, they find themselves married to a pair of sorceresses whose magical abilities are only now surfacing.
But one encounter with dear old dad is all it takes for them to realize, they’re still the underdogs.
From the back of the book:
VBT_Blood_Brothers__Tour_Book_Cover_Banner_copy“The series is called Blood Brothers, but this adventure is really a family affair: the brothers, their partners, children and even their old man in a starring role as the villain. Think Disney’s Incredibles, but in a violent and bizarre fantasy world.” Rob May, Dragon Killer
“With incredibly detailed world building and action scenes, this story seems like it would make a phenomenal film or TV series.
Moore pulls out all the stops with dragons, telekinesis, shapeshifters and insurmountable odds in this battle of good versus evil – and a villain who just won’t lay down and die.” Demelza Carlton, Ocean’s Gift
“When you read a Dean C. Moore novel, you can expect rich, original characters, witty dialogue and unexpected plot turns.  Blood Brothers doesn’t disappoint.”  JC Gatlin, Designated Survivor
Welcome Dean. I hope you enjoy your visit to fundinmental.
5 Fun or Silly Facts About Me
  1. I live in the country on roughly twenty acres. My closest neighbors all own larger pieces of property and spend at least half of their time farming. And wouldn’t you know, they’re both writers? Both have authored some pretty impressive books that have done well. For fans of synchronicity and serendipity (Deepak Chopra wrote a book on this topic), it could be argued that this is a sign I’m on the right path.
  2. I hiked a section of the Appalachian Trail some years back, where I met some of the most remarkable and alluring characters I’ve ever encountered in the real world. Usually, as an author, I have to get lost in a fantasy world of my own making to meet people with this kind of magic. But they exist in the real world if you just know where to find them.  I’d like to chalk these chance encounters up to synchronicity too, and declare them the latest indicator that I’m on the right path with my fantasy writing. But I think it has more to do with the courage and willingness to leave everything behind when you walk that trail, and the college kids that are drawn to it at that sweet point in their lives where everything is possible and nothing, no hurdle is great enough to stand in their way. For anyone who has lost that sense of formidableness, I would encourage you to hike the Appalachian Trail. Admittedly, it’s not as prestigious as the Camino trail Shirley MacClaine once walked, but hey, it may be a lot more accessible for some folks.
  3. I have over five hundred books on spirituality that made it with me this last trip. Sadly, I had to part with hundreds of titles over the years with each move. Authors include Ken Wilber (he has many tomes out, and I’ve read them all.) I have a healthy dose of Deepak Chopra, and you’ll find any number of things pertaining to mysticism. Some stand out titles: The Way of Zen by Alan Watts. What Really Matters by Tony Shwartz. Diamond Heart by A. H. Almaas. There are any number of bridging books that connect spirituality with science and higher consciousness. Things like: The Physics of Immortality. The Physics of Consciousness. The Holographic Paradigm. This stuff seeps into my writing, especially my bigger epics, but so far I’ve yet to pen a book solely devoted to higher consciousness in non-fiction format. Well, that’s not entirely true. I have a series akin to the Conversations with God franchise that’s probably modeled just as much on The Great Dialogues by Plato. I’ll have to dust it off one of these days and consider publishing it. As to my qualifications to undertake such a project, rest assured I’m far more enlightened from the altered state in which I write than I am in real life. If only I could hold on to that inner peace and calm and infinite wisdom when I return to reality!
  4. For a professional author I’m the slowest reader you’ll ever meet. And I don’t just read, I underline, I highlight in different colors—each alluding to another point of emphasis, I leave notes, I edit. (Yes, I’m one of those people who have the unmitigated gall to edit Faulkner. Moby Dick was about a third of the size when I was done with my red pen. Sacrilege, I know.) But it’s how we grow as writers. I just wish I could get out of this habit so I could get through titles a bit faster.
  5. I’m on a quest to sample every piece of quality dark chocolate in the world. If I ever make it big as a writer, I might get a plane and title it The Chocolate Express, because it might just be more fun to fly to where they make the chocolate than to fly the chocolate to me.
Thanks, Dean, for telling us a bit about yourself.
If you ever get that plane, give me a call. 🙂
EXCERPT
The excerpts are exceptional and I would have loved to share them all.
This one was so darn cute, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
The electricity out throughout the house, both baby dragons soared into the kitchen, lighting the candles for Myrna with their fiery blasts, the star and heart shaped ones, the ones molded like mugs of beer with big foam headers, and the magic spell casting ones with the different colored flames.
Their work in the kitchen done, they dashed out to attend to the other rooms. Before Myrna could prance halfway up the stairs after them, she took out her Bic lighter, and put the flame to her forearm. “Ah! You’re awake, all right!”
Her next thought was, she suddenly had a pair of dragons to care for. How was she going to manage that? Oh dear, what do you guys eat?
She rushed back to the kitchen.
Myrna held a candle inside the refrigerator, as she ripped food out left and right. The roasted artichoke. The blue cheese and citrus bruschetta. The apricot pistachio halves. Everything meticulously wrapped. The dragons came swooping back into the room.
They looked at her, bewildered as she continued to plow through the itinerary. The vegetarian chili and macaroni. The tempeh and tapenade wrap. She was sure she had something to accommodate every palate.
“Whada ya think?” she said, gesturing to the buffet covering the entire kitchen thanks to her throwing food willy-nilly. One of the dragons bounded up and swooped to the floor, where it gulped down a mouse.
Myrna put up her hands gesturing, “Oh no, we’re all vegetarians here.”
AUTHOR Bio and Links
MEDIA_KIT_Author_PhotoI write sci-fi, fantasy, action-adventures and thrillers, or some combination thereof—usually with a strong vein of dark humor.  Though, my works are dramas first; the humor is there to take the edge off as with the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Transformers, and Jurassic Park franchises.
I wrote screenplays for a while, and while enjoying them, I found them a bit confining.  After a while you just need the extra page count to flesh out characters better and do additional world building, especially when considering doing anything epic in scope.  I also took a run at future forecasting and trend tracking, being as I always had my head in the future, things like Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock.  I also relished this, and can certainly see myself releasing a few titles accordingly in the nonfiction area.  But since delving into novels, short and long, I’ve definitely found my home and my voice.  For the first time I feel the restraints have been taken off of my imagination.  I suppose all mediums have their limits, so I may end up doing a mix of things, but I suspect I will continue to spend most of my time with novels.  Series add an additional dimension, allowing for even more depth and development both in the character and world building departments.  But I remain at heart a divergent thinker, so, no surprise, I seem to have more series going than follow up installments at this point.  That too may change over time; we’ll see.  Until then, it may be best to just think of these books as one-offs if you’re fond of my writing style and some of the themes I work with.
My current catalog of twelve books represents a little over five years’ worth of work.  I’m currently averaging a couple books annually.  Of my existing franchises with multiple installments, The Hundred Year Clone books can be read in any order, while the 5 books of Renaissance 2.0 must be read in sequence as they form part of a singular story arc (much as with A Game of Thrones.)
I live in the country where I breed bluebirds, which are endangered in these parts, as my small contribution to restoring nature’s balance.  When I’m not writing, or researching my next book, I may also be found socializing with friends, or working in my organic garden.
They are alone, but they are ready.
GUEST POST
The Delinquents – Who are they?
Day Zero was fun for me to write because I finally got to add characters that I never had a chance to include in my ongoing Collapse Series. I was able to explore the personalities and characteristics outside of the military environment in which Cassidy Hart – the protagonist of The Collapse Series – finds herself.
I explore the survival mentality of people who are not militarily inclined, but rather the average of the average: teenagers. Elle herself is a hardened survivor, but other characters in the book are just learning the ropes of staying alive after the apocalypse, and it was fun to test out their resilience, so to speak. The Delinquents – as I call them – are the survivors that Elle teams up with in Day Zero. Without giving anything away, I can say that the group is diverse, and I loved creating the backstory for each and every character.
I LOVE covers! I guess you could call me a cover whore. And PROUD of it. 😉
We may not be able to judge a book by it’s cover, but it is most always the thing that makes me say, “I GOTTA have that book.”
WHAT DV BERKOM HAS TO SAY ABOUT THE COVERS
I did all but Yucatan Dead and A One Way Ticket to Dead–Kim Killion from the Killion Group created those. I just love working with her- she’s fast and professional.
MY REVIEW
 Yucatan Dead by D V Berkom is an action packed adventure that had me racing through the Mexican jungle, dodging danger and death with Yucatan Kate. The characters come to life on the pages with multiple stories being told.
Mexico Cenote (c) Sherry Fundin
Mexico Cenote (c) Sherry Fundin
All Kate wanted was to have a normal life with her new love, Cole. She had a family now, but the past continued to haunt her. Would she have to pay for the rest of her life or would the assassin finish her off?
Kate had made a mistake falling for a drug lord. She knew you didn’t just walk away from someone like him.
I cannot imagine how terrorized she must be. Kate is plucked from her home in Arizona and hauled out of the country to Mexico. Back to Salazar, a dangerous drug lord, who is super pissed at her. Kate had not just left him, she took some of his money too.
Kate escapes. She is on her own and being chased, hiding, not knowing which way to go. Until…..
Quinn. He is a warrior of the twenty first century kind. D V Berkom describes him as a Rottweiler kind of guy. I love it. He has a pack of dogs, always at his side and has his own war going on with the cartel. Him and his team work the jungles, shutting down the traffickers.
He nicknames her Yucatan Kate.
The cartel is blood thirsty. They are ruthless and cruel, not just dealing in drugs, but also human trafficking and the slave trade.
Your enemy could be standing right beside you posing as your friend, your ally. Trusting the wrong person could get you killed.
A touch of mysticism walks with Kate through the jungle. She had bad spirits around her, but her jaguar spirit was watching over her. I am always intrigued with mystical cultures and, even though Yucatan Dead is light in this department, it does add a special additional element that makes me wonder if D V Berkom will add to it as the series develops. Or maybe she already has, I just don’t know it yet.   😀
Yucatan Dead is a spine tingling race for survival as Kate dodges the ruthless cartel who, will stop at nothing to get her. I loved running and hiding in the jungle with Kate, hanging out at camp with Quinn, his dogs and the team, floating through the Cenote, and trying to evade the people sent to find her.
I have a feeling I will be seeing Kate again and I am eager for the next adventure. How about you Kate? Are you ready? Will Quinn be there?
“I’ll give you a worse case scenario. Yucatan Kate is going to be Yucatan Dead.”
“If I had to die, the one thing I can control is how..”
I love that and will keep that handy for future reference.
I find D V Berkom’s bio pretty adventurous itself. Be sure and check her out.
I received Yucatan Kate from D V Berkom in return for an honest, unbiased review.
Soooooo, let’s meet Yucatan Kate as seen through D V’s eyes
Welcome D V. I am so excited to have you on fundinmental and I’m eager to hear what you have to say about your characters. I am always curious how authors create them. So let’s take a sneak peek into the mind of DV.
Where Did She Come From?
A Character in the Making
As a writer, I’m often asked this question. I write a couple of thriller series featuring strong female characters—both of whom frequently end up in extreme circumstances—but each one is uniquely different and have their own way of dealing with danger.
Like Kate Jones, for example.
Mexico Palms (c) Sherry Fundin
Mexico Palms (c) Sherry Fundin
When we first meet Kate in Bad Spirits, she’s in her 20s and on the run from a huge mistake she made that I’m sure many of us can relate to—she fell for the wrong guy. And I mean the REALLY wrong guy. Turns out, Roberto Salazar is the vicious leader of a Mexican drug cartel. And, well, he’s not one to appreciate a woman who takes something that belongs to him and just up and disappears into the Sonoran desert. Oh, and did I mention she stole a bunch of his money?
She watched him slit the throat of a friend over basically nothing and in a blinding moment of insight realized if he could do something like that to a good friend, she could be next. Due to the nature of the business, drug lords often become a tad, um, paranoid, and what you don’t want to do is cross them. Ever.
So she runs, attempting to stay one step ahead of Salazar.
Until she doesn’t.
Several people have asked if I’m writing this series from memory (I lived in Mexico for a time in my twenties) and I can tell you that, to my knowledge, I wasn’t involved with a member of a drug cartel. I did meet several people in my travels who were probably connected in some way, but they didn’t talk about it. And, you know, I didn’t ask.
The truth is, I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life that had long-ranging repercussions—and yes, a couple of those mistakes involved men. That’s the thing about decisions. You don’t know what consequences might be set in motion when you make them…
For Kate, I took something I might have done in the same circumstances and then threw everything I could think of at her, putting her in the worst possible situations and then letting her figure out how to get herself out of them (because, well, if she died then the series would be over J). She’s grown quite a bit from that first terrifying adventure but she hasn’t lost what makes her Kate. She’s still dealing with the three I’s that make up her character: impatient, impetuous, and intrepid, which, in real life as well as in fiction is a sure recipe for disaster.
My other character, Leine Basso, came into being when I had a bizarre dream about a reality show where beautiful women compete for a date with a serial killer (Serial Date). The dream came to me as a promotional spot featuring women contestants and the killer-bachelor. For balance, I needed someone who would be able to go toe-to-toe against a serial killer. I love writing strong women characters and it didn’t take long before Leine showed up, fully formed and demanding a leading role. Leine is a burned-out female assassin with daughter issues who doesn’t like people very much, except for a certain sexy homicide detective named Santiago Jensen…the perfect match for a serial killer. Her character is derived from several people I’ve met through the years, shot through with a few of my own imperfections, just to make it interesting.
Both characters are a kick to write, and, what I’ve heard from readers, fun to read. If you enjoy genuinely flawed but gutsy female characters who know how to handle danger, then you just might like meeting Kate and Leine.
***Warning: Neither series is for the faint of heart***
There’s adult language and situations, dead bodies, sleazy politicians, and enough villainous characters to fill a book.
Enjoy!  smiley face photo: Smiley Face smileyface.png
This is a fantastic guest post and I enjoyed it tremendously. I love how you threw everything at Kate knowing she couldn’t die. LOL The informative, yet light telling of your thoughts had me smiling and chuckling as I read it. I even went back and read it again. Thanks so much for visiting fundinmental and I look forward to having you back again…..soon.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Image of D.V. BerkomDV Berkom is a slave to the voices in her head. As the author of two popular thriller series (Leine Basso and Kate Jones), her love of creating resilient, kick-*ss female characters stems from a lifelong addiction to reading spy novels, mysteries, and thrillers, and longing to find the female equivalent within those pages.
Raised in the Midwest, she received her BA in political science from the University of Minnesota and promptly moved to Mexico to live on a sailboat. Many, many cross-country moves (and several years) later, she now lives just outside of Seattle, Washington with the love of her life, Mark, an ex-chef-turned contractor, and writes every chance she gets.
The Reaper is Here – Call Me Grim by Elizabeth Holloway Tour Giveaway
Call-Me-Grim-Banner
.
Call Me Grim by Elizabeth Holloway is a paranormal/supernatural novel about Aaron, the local Grim Reaper and Libbi, the girl he saves.
Sounds very interesting to me. That is why I wanted to share Call Me Grim with you.
Be sure and enter the giveaway at the end of the post for a chance to win a copy for your very own.
GUEST POST
Welcome, Elizabeth to fundinmental. I am so happy to have you here and sharing your thoughts for my readers.
I am curious how authors relate to their characters and think this guest post is a real hoot. How about you? Be sure and read to the end and let Elizabeth know if you have any suggestions of your own. ^_^
Call Me Grim- The Author’s Dream Cast
I admit it! I have gazed off into space when I should have been writing (don’t tell my editor) and dreamed of the actors that should play my characters, in the remote chance my book is made into a movie. My only defense is I’m not the only author who’s done it, and I probably won’t be the last.
Since I’ve obviously thought about this far more than I should have, I might as well share my dreams with you fine folks.
Libbi Piper
Physical description: Petite but curvy, dark-brown wavy hair, bright green eyes, round face
Libbi’s a hard character to cast. Obviously, I need to think about her physical appearance, but she’s also smart, snarky, and not afraid to stand up for the people she loves, or something she believes in. That’s why I picked Emma Roberts to take the lead as Libbi Piper.
Aaron Shepherd
Physical description: Tall and lean, black hair that falls over his forehead, deep blue eyes, pale skin, a little shadow of scruff on his cheeks and chin
I’m not gonna lie. I’ve had this actor pegged to play Aaron ever since I saw him in Warm Bodies. Granted, he doesn’t say a whole heck of a lot in that film, but I love his ability to express so much in the subtlest of gestures and grunts. Aaron is wordier than that, obviously, but he still holds a lot back. I think Nicholas Hoult would play him beautifully.
Kyle Dennis
Physical description: muscular drummer’s build, blond wavy hair, dark-brown eyes
Kyle Dennis is probably more difficult to cast than Libbi. He has so many layers and wears his (often intense) emotions on his sleeve. The actor who plays him not only needs to look the part, he needs to have the ability to play a wide range of emotions. I’d love to see a young Alex Pettyfer in the role. Never mind the fact that Emma Roberts dated him at one point and they probably wouldn’t want to work together. This is a fantasy cast, after all.
That’s enough of my dreaming. If anyone has read, or is planning to read Call Me Grim and would like to give me your dream cast suggestions, I would love to hear them. Leave them in the comments here, or tweet them to me @eholloway300.
Excellent guest post, Elizabeth. Thanks so much for sharing your dreams!
Call Me Grim by Elizabeth Holloway
Publication date: September 9, 2014
Publisher: Month9Books, LLC.
 SYNOPSIS
The truck should have turned Libbi Piper into a Libbi Pancake — and it would have, too, if Aaron hadn’t shown up and saved her life. The problem? Aaron’s the local Grim Reaper… and he only saved Libbi’s life because he needs someone to take over his job. Now, Libbi has two days to choose between dying like she was supposed to, or living a lonely life as Death Incarnate. Talk about a rock and a hard place.
And the choice goes from hard to sucktastic when her best friend shows up marked: condemned as a future murderer. Libbi could have an extra week to stop the murder and fix the mark… but only if she accepts Aaron’s job as Reaper, trapping herself in her crappy town forever, invisible and inaudible to everyone except the newly dead. But, if she refuses? Her best friend is headed straight for Hell.
