INTERVIEW

I want to welcome Devon McCormack to fundinmental. I love to hear what authors think about their books and characters, so I chose this interview to share with you.

Okay, Devon, take it away.

What’s the story of Hideous?

I always say it’s the story of a boy and his demon. Luke Retter lives in a world where demons are a known and constant threat. When Luke was eight, his demon-possessed severed off one of his hands and gouged out one of his eyes. It also marked him with its emblem. People who bear an emblem of a demon are called curseds. Curseds are more likely to be possessed themselves later in life, so they are monitored and essentially enslaved by the state. Many years after his attack, Luke works as a janitor at an all-boys academy, where he has to watch all the other kids live out their normal lives. He’s jealous. He wishes he could just make friends and go to school dances, but he can’t and he knows he never will. Then the demon that possessed his father finds him, and things just get even worse…

When did you decide you wanted to write YA books?

I didn’t really ever make a decision to write Young Adult novels. I knew when the idea for Hideous came to me that it was going to end up being most appropriate for a Young Adult audience, but I just write stories as they come to me. I try not to write for genres, but I think that it’s natural for people to gravitate to genres they like. For instance, I’ve noticed that I primarily write paranormal stories, which makes sense, considering those were the types of stories that I grew up loving. I think a part of what interests me about that age range is that there’s so much emotion during that time. And not just emotion, but very strong emotion coupled with very rigid ideas about the world. As I grew up, I discovered that the world wasn’t what I was led to believe, so my expectations changed, and I never have the sort of dramatic breakdowns that I had in high school. But back then, when I was still believing so many of the distortions of reality, I had very strong reactions to not getting what I wanted.

 Who are your favorite YA authors?

Hands down, I’d have to say S.E. Hinton. She was the first book I read that was technically Young Adult adult. It was Rumble Fish. I think most people read The Outsiders first, but we didn’t get to that until the following year. Tex was my favorite book, though. He was so cool. He was so interesting. I wanted to be him. My most recent Young Adult adult author favorite would have to be Scott Westerfeld. I adore his The Midnighters series. It’s about these kids who have powers during this special hour where time stops for everyone but them. The stories are so well written and fun. When I first read those books, I stood up and paced my room because I was so excited. They were thrilling. They were riveting. I recommend those books to anyone and everyone. I can’t think of a book that has elicited as much excitement from me as that.

SYNOPSIS

.

Eight years ago, Luke Retter witnessed the brutal murder of his mother and sister at the hands of his demon-possessed father. He survived but lost a hand and an eye. The demon also burned its emblem into his skin, marking him as a cursed. Those who bear this mark are at risk of becoming possessed themselves, so they are monitored and enslaved by the state-run UCIS. Working as a slave is hard, but Luke prefers it to the possibility of being controlled by a demon.

One night, Luke wakes to find his worst nightmare coming true. His father’s demon has returned. In a panic, he runs to the only person who might be able to help: Zack, a cursed who ran away from the state and created an underground community to protect other fugitive curseds. Zack helps him suppress the demon. But the city’s become a time bomb, and Luke’s demon itches to escape.

With the UCIS closing in on Zack’s underground operation and Luke’s demon crafting its own, nefarious plot, Luke realizes that he must take a stand.

AUTHOR BIO

Devon McCormack spends most of his time hiding in his lair, adventuring in paranormal worlds with his island of misfit characters. A good ole Southern boy, McCormack grew up in the Georgian suburbs with his two younger brothers and an older sister. At a very young age, he spun tales the old fashioned way, lying to anyone and everyone he encountered. He claimed he was an orphan. He claimed to be a king from another planet. He claimed to have supernatural powers. He has since harnessed this penchant for tall tales by crafting whole worlds where he can live out whatever fantasy he chooses.

A gay man himself, McCormack focuses on gay male characters, adding to the immense body of literature that chooses to represent and advocate gay men’s presence in media. His body of work ranges from erotica to young adult, so readers should check the synopses of his books before purchasing so that they know what they’re getting into.

EXCERPT
.

“One-Mississippi-two…” Gavin’s words wrapped around me.

I prayed silently to the same God I’d prayed to many nights before. He listened then and I hoped he’d listen now.

I grabbed two knives that were in the kit and flipped the blades open, locking them in place. The anodized orange handles were larger than the actual blades. Not comforting. I handed one to Gavin.

“There’s still a Louisville Slugger on the floor behind us,” Gavin said. His brown hair was cut short. That was one of the first things he did after we were vaccinated. A haircut and a shave to celebrate our survival. He still looked young but not as young as we both did before the outbreak.

I slid toward the center console, crawling as far from the passenger window as I could get. Gavin’s breathing was heavy, and I felt the heat rolling off him as he continued to struggle with what we were facing.

I dug around in the bottom of the bag for the zombie deterrent. My hand clasped around the ADD, also known as the Audible Distraction Device, and I dropped the kit to the floor.

The car rocked back and forth as the number of beasts grew on both sides, creating a trance-like rhythm that was terrifying.

“Grab the bat,” Gavin instructed, his voice low.

I slid my hand to his knee, squeezing it hard before I reached behind us and grabbed the wooden weapon.

The challenges we faced living off the land paled in comparison to what we faced confined in this car.

Gavin turned the engine on and sunk it into reverse, only to be stalled right where we were.

“Pedestrians in minimum safe distance,” the car warned again.

“Shut up!” I shouted at the car’s inhuman voice.

An oily residue smeared against the glass all around us from their bodies touching and gliding along the surfaces. They were crawling on the hood, metal pops sounded with every dent created. Their bodies slowly snaked up the windshield as they climbed toward the roof. Their mouths opening, jaws clicking as they tasted our scent. That was all we had separating us from zombies—glass. It would be only a matter of time before they mangled the metal above us and shattered the glass around us.

“If I get out of the car, I can distract them and you can run. I need you to run,” he said slowly, his eyes locking on mine.

“No way. I’m not—”

The glass shattered, interrupting my objection. The shards of glass crumbled down the door and into Gavin’s lap. Several mismatched arms shoved their hands through the nonexistent barrier, reaching for Gavin as I let out a scream and lunged with the knife in hand.

“Don’t watch what happens, babe. Promise me you’ll look away,” his voice pleading, as he struggled against the fleshy fingers that twisted and pulled at his shirt.

CHARACTER INTERIVEW WITH REBEKAH
.

Do doubt your sanity with everything you’ve uncovered, after your husband’s death?

I still doubt my sanity. When I saw my husband taken by those creatures—targeted by those creatures—I knew something was deadly wrong. The outbreak had been contained to a point. We had all been vaccinated… yet I watched my husband die by the very beings we were told we didn’t have to fear any longer.

When even my closest friends didn’t believe what I saw my world became very fragile… I’d say there were many times I doubted my sanity and with everything I’ve continued to uncover, it’s hard not to wonder who the crazy one is. I’d like to think it’s not me, but that’s probably up for debate by some.

When you met Preston in the bar, did you expect him to become so important in your life?

I saw something that night in his eyes. The same pain and torment I wake up with every single day, but I didn’t expect him to hold so many answers. No. I really didn’t expect it. I just thought he was a bartender that ran with the wrong crowd.

And I still can’t believe what we’ve discovered about the Afterworld, and who we’re having to fight just to stay alive. I thought being on the run during the outbreak was behind me, but it seems to be just the beginning.

Did you think you might not survive the outbreak?

There were many days I didn’t think Gavin and I would make it. Then there were days when I saw that glimmer of hope and knew we could survive. It was the best feeling in the world when Gavin and I got vaccinated, but it was also one of the worst as we realized how many loved ones we’d lost. It’s a tough thing to handle. But that’s why I need to find the answers to what’s really going on in the Afterworld.

Launch, ARC Review & Giveaway I Am Forever by Wynne Channing

Wynne Channing’s sequel to What Kills Me, I Am Forever, is now available.

I have a lot to share, but it is all so good, I can’t help myself.

The covers are beautiful but the story inside………

An ancient prophecy warns of a girl destined to cause the extinction of the vampire race.

Thus, Axelia’s story began.

 photo goodreads-badge-add-38px11_zps1ae6e47f.jpg

ABOUT I AM FOREVER

Axelia fought an army of vampires and survived. Once fated as the destroyer of the vampire race, she is now welcomed into the immortal empire and revered as a god.

But instead of relishing her victory, she faces a dangerous new world and an empire at war. Axelia is thrust into the position of supreme vampire and caught in the crossfire of battle. To make matters worse, her role alienates Lucas, the one vampire that she trusts.

Her power spawns evil enemies. And they know how to get to her — by hurting those whom she loves most.

MY REVIEW FOR I AM FOREVER BY WYNNE CHANNING

I am a Super Vampire. So, why am I locked up with Lucas in an empty room, while the Empress and her cronies decide our fate?

They can’t kill me or they all die.

~~~
Spoiler Alert: I Am Forever is the sequel to What Kills Me. I will do my best to give little or nothing away, because I feel this book is even better than the first and I would like you to experience it for yourself.
The covers for Wynne’s books are beautiful. I love the colors and the effect of shattered glass. It’s an indication of what is to come as Axelia continues her battle to stay alive and retain her freedom.
Wynne writes in such vivid detail, I can breathe in the heavy scent of the botanical garden through the thick humid air. I can feel the moisture beading on my skin and dripping down my back. It is easy to relate to the excellent description, when you live in a Gulf state, as I do.
Her description of the doctor looking like Ernie from Sesame Street had me laughing out loud.
Wynne describes how vampires date by comparing it to Lady and the Tramp eating spaghetti. I bet that is a visual that will take you a while to erase from your mind.
Ever since the accident that made her a vampire, the Sacriva’s prophecy has ruled her life:
A human girl will be reborn a vampire. She will shed the blood of all those who walk in darkness. She will be the first. She will mean the death of all Vampires.
Axelia – not only was she super powerful, she was also immune to the sun. She didn’t need to breathe, but her senses were heightened and she would do it just to enjoy the smells. She had been a seventeen year old high school student, until two weeks ago. Now she is a God, but she would give her life for Lucas.
Lucas – incredibly brave. He made Axelia feel safe, having saved her life more than once. He stuck to her like glue and would die for her.
Wynne keeps me on the fence about Uther. Is he good? Is he bad? Is he trustworthy and naive or just evil? You will have to read for yourself to find out.
But the Empress, I know what she is. My question is – does Axelia?
I was disappointed in Axelia’s actions with the Empress, but I kept saying to myself, “She is seventeen years old and has only been a Vampire for two weeks.” How would I react? Or you?
Axelia’s story kept getting better. Wynne manages to have me laughing, even as heads are flying – I mean that literally. The war continues in I Am Forever and I stand by Axelia as I try to tell her to watch out for……..She only wants to have a life and I want that for her.
MY REVIEW
ABOUT WHAT KILLS ME
An ancient prophecy warns of a girl destined to cause the extinction of the vampire race.
So when 17-year-old Axelia falls into a sacred well filled with blood and emerges a vampire, the immortal empire believes she is this legendary destroyer. Hunted by soldiers and mercenaries, Axelia and her reluctant ally, the vampire bladesmith Lucas, must battle to survive.
How will she convince the empire that she is just an innocent teenager-turned bloodsucker and not a creature of destruction? And if she cannot, can a vampire who is afraid of bugs summon the courage to fight a nation of immortals?
Interview, Review and Giveaway for Award Winning Novelist Bette Lee Crosby’s Jubilee’s Journey
BlogBanner_copyTo follow the tour, go HERE.
I am so happy to be sharing a new novel, Jubilee’s Journey, from the award winning novelist, Bette Lee Crosby.
Bette Lee is as warm and charming as her characters. Maybe that is why her characters are so realistic, as are their stories. Read the interview below to find out for yourself.
Spare Change was the first book of Bette Lee’s that I read and it is still my favorite. To see my review, go HERE. I have been an avid fan of hers ever since.
Be sure and check out my review of Jubilee’s Journey and Bette Lee Crosby’s two great giveaways below.
BOOK BLURB FROM GOODREADS
When tragedy strikes a West Virginia coal mining family, two children start out on a trek that they hope will lead them to a new life. Before a day passes, the children are separated and the boy is caught up in a robbery not of his making. If his sister can find him, she may be able to save him. The problem is she’s only seven years old, and who’s going to believe a kid?
Jubilee’s Journey is Book Two in the Wyattsville Series. This story of discovering lost family and finding love reconnects readers with Ethan Allen and the other heart-warming characters of the bestselling novel SPARE CHANGE.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

INTERVIEW WITH BETTE LEE CROSBY

I am so happy to have you here today Bette. I believe your interview will give my readers an idea of how you are able to come up with such wonderful and interesting characters and stories for your books.

1. Who or what inspired you to become an author?

My mother, born and raised in the mountains of West Virginia, was not a writer, but, she was a wonderful storyteller. Not realizing that at heart I was my mother’s daughter, I studied art intent upon becoming a graphic designer. My first job was that of a packaging designer, but it was a short-lived career. Faced with an immediate deadline and a blank space where the copy should have been, I began to write. I never looked back, and it didn’t take long for me to realize that my love for words far outweighed any design skills I acquired along the way.

2. Jubilee’s Journey is Book Two in the Wyattsville Series, but wasn’t Book One, Spare Change, written as a stand-alone novel?

Yes it was. Actually all of my books are stand-alone novels, but after Spare Change was published, I discovered that both I and my readers were not ready to leave Wyattsville and the people living there. That’s when I turned it into an ongoing series. Like many writers, I tend to favor the books that reflect the most poignant aspects of their life. For me, it’s my Southern heritage.

3. Will there be more books in The Wyattsville Series?

Although I do not have one currently planned, I’m sure there will be. Once you get involved with characters you are fond of, it’s hard to let them leave your life forever. I find that I think of characters like Olivia Doyle, Ethan Allen, Paul and Jubilee as friends. I might not get back together with them for six or eight months, but I always know they are there…waiting for me and ready to start off on a new adventure.

4. You’ve written six novels, in those books, which character is your favorite and why?

I suppose I’d have to say Ethan Allen of Spare Change and the reason why is because he is the type of kid I imagine my mom being when she was his age. She came from a family of eleven siblings and they were what many of us would consider poor; so she had to be resilient and determined to survive. And although she wasn’t one to toss around obscenities indiscriminately, she could cuss up a storm when she was really mad. When Mama started cussing we knew to step aside and mind our manners.

 5.  Is Ethan Allen is modeled after your mom, is there a character that you’d modeled after yourself?

There is probably a bit of me in every character, but the one most like me would probably be Olivia Doyle in both Spare Change and Jubilee’s Journey. Like Olivia, I have quirky ideas about life, I am an eternal optimist and regardless of the odds, I will always go down swinging. When life takes a turn for the worse, that’s when you need to be strong, draw on your Faith and cling to the love of those around you…which is pretty much what Olivia does.

5. What is your next book project?

I am currently working on a novel titled “Previously Loved Treasures.” Although it is not a sequel, it does dovetail into the mystery that ended “The Twelfth Child.” One of the protagonists in this book is a delightful man of magical talents called Peter Pennington and much of the story centers around a very special second-hand store. I believe this book is scheduled for release in April or May of 2014.

6. What is your favorite quote?

It probably depends upon when and where you ask me. I would love to be deep and profound like so many brilliant writers, but I’ve learned over the years that I am still my mother’s daughter – sometimes irreverent, always a story-lover, but seldom brilliant. So here is the quote that most closely reflects my own thinking…”The problem with people who have no vices is that generally you can be pretty sure they’re going to have some pretty annoying virtues.” Elizabeth Taylor

7. What advice would you give to an aspiring author?

 Be yourself. Discover what’s in your heart and create characters you love or love to hate. Never allow yourself to follow in the tracks of another author simply because he or she sold a million copies of their book. If you stumble on that pathway, your readers will know; your characters will sound shallow and superficial. But if you’re true to yourself and work to develop your own voice it will ring loud and true with believability. It isn’t something that happens overnight. I wrote four novels before the fifth was published, but the truth is that the first four didn’t deserve to be published, they were all part of my learning curve. So, stay with it and learn from the writers who inspire you, from the books you love, and from the books you hate. You learn something from every book you read, and sometimes that something is what not to do.  Most of all enjoy every minute you spend writing—because if you’re not writing for fun, you shouldn’t be writing.

MY REVIEW OF JUBILEE’S JOURNEY

“We’ll name her Jubilee, because this child is a celebration of our love.”

Thus, Jubilee’s story began and you will not want to miss it.

~~~~~~
Jubilee’s Journey is the sequel to Spare Change. Spare Change was the first book of Bette Lee’s that I read and it is still my favorite. I have been an avid fan of hers ever since.
The southern charm and giving nature of the characters captivate me. It makes me think of Hillary Clinton’s book, It Takes A Village. This book drives home the point that a community can accomplish so much more than a single individual. We can definitely learn some lessons from the loving and giving characters in Bette Lee’s novels.
I love her covers and this one speaks to me as strongly as all the others. They are some of the most touching and emotional covers in their simplicity. The cover design for Jubilee’s Journey was done by Kathleen Valentine of valentinedesign.com. Bette Lee will also occasionally incorporate a friend or fan’s name into her novels.
Living in coal country is never easy, but for Paul and Jubilee it became impossible.
Their mother died and my tears began. Paul did his best to be there for Jubilee – he never returned to school, so he did all he could think of to make Jubilee’s life better  and took care of the house. After his father’s death, they were evicted from the only home they had ever known. How would Paul keep his promise to his mother to take care of Jubilee and his promise to his father to never work in the mine?
He knew of an aunt in Wyattsville, Virginia. He only had a name, Anita, but off they went.
Into the clouds - (c) Sherry J Fundin
Into the clouds – (c) Sherry J Fundin
Hurt McAdams dad had abused him and raised him with fear. As a defense, he took the offensive line and became a bully, then a murderer. He ended up in Wyattsville on his search to find his father and make him pay for his miserable life.
Oh no, Paul is in the store looking for work and here comes Hurt. I am very fearful, my heart is heavy with dread. I knew it. Bette!!!! But, what’s this? Who should arrive but Ethan Allen and I breathe a sigh of relief. No way will he allow anything bad to happen to Jubilee.
“Grandma Olivia’s nice. She helps kids in trouble.”
That being said, I knew things would be okay. Somehow.
Bette Lee Crosby writes stories as if they are biographies. They are full of the cruelties and unfairness of life, but also the beauty and wonder. The worlds and dialogue are so real, I feel as if I am there and I feel frustrated because I do not know what to do to help. She packs so much life and realism into her novels, sometimes a BOX of tissues is not enough. I laugh and cry with the characters. I go through their highs and lows, their ups and downs, all the while trying to figure out how Bette is going to make this end with a happy ever after.
The ending left me begging for more. I was sitting on the edge of my seat as if my happiness was on the line.
Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos    5 STARS Would Buy It For Them (lol)
I received this book from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review. I can hardly wait to see what she has in store for us next.
 A beautiful opera singer hangs herself on the eve of her debut at the Met.  Seven years later the opera she was rehearsing—Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffmann—begins to take over the lives of her two schizophrenic children, the doctors who treat them and everyone else who crosses their paths, until all are enmeshed in a world of deception and delusion, of madness and ultimately of evil and death.  Onto this shadowy stage steps Nicole P., a graduate student who discovers that she too has been assigned a role in the drama. What strange destiny is being worked out in their lives?
 EXCERPT
Nicole had mixed feelings about going home after two weeks at the Institute.  She occupied a dingy garret in a dark rambling house that had been converted to apartments, overseen by a nosy landlady named Mrs. Gruber who owned several cats but never seemed to feed them.  One bright spot: the computer was still on, waiting faithfully for her return.   The screen was blank but all she had to do was touch the space bar and a magic technicolor world rose up before her.  Out of habit she opened her “Things To Do” folder.  Most of it was out of date now—unminded reminders, dead deadlines, pointless appointments.  With one sweep of the mouse she consigned the entire contents of the folder to the trash bin.  It was a grand feeling, having nothing to do, but it was short lived.  Now the computer stared at her with a gaze blank and pitiless as the sun.  Tentatively she started typing:
Bread, milk, eggs, corn flakes.
Pick up dry cleaning.
Find a thesis topic.
Keep from going crazy.
Let’s put that one on top and keep it there.  Thing To Do Numero Uno:  Keep from going crazy.   But how?  Much as she liked Dr. Hoffmann, she wanted to accomplish that particular Thing To Do in her own way, without any help from the pharmaceutical industry.  She reached in her purse and found the pills he’d given her, and without thinking very much about it she ran into the bathroom and flushed them down the toilet.
Now, she thought, I’m on my own.
BRUCE HARTMAN discusses how he comes up with story ideas and characters.
I usually start out with a concept rather than characters. Then I try to imagine characters and situations that fit that concept.  There’s an old adage that the story begins when the conflict begins.  In other words, you have to conceive the story as a conflict between characters.  For this you need characters who contrast in important ways, such as age, gender, occupation, ideology, family status and social position.  Apart from such characteristics, something in the story concept must put the main characters in conflict with each other.  This is best envisioned as a clash of goals.  Each of the main characters should have a primary goal, consistent with their defining characteristics, which brings them into conflict with the other characters. This goal may arise out of an existing relationship or the events of the story itself.
The approach sketched above isn’t the only way to write a novel.  Many writers start with a strong character and let the plot take care of itself.  Even with that approach, however, the story typically emerges from the clash of this character with others who stand opposed in some way.
Whether the characters emerge from the story or the other way around, the writer’s most important and difficult problem is the characters’ motivation.  “Realism,” if it means anything, means realistic motivation.  This is critical in commercial fiction: readers simply will not tolerate characters doing things that don’t seem properly motivated.  In theory, if the writer follows the characters into the story, motivation shouldn’t be a problem: the characters will only do what is well motivated.  In practice, human motivations are never as unambiguous as readers of fiction might prefer, and they often lead to actions that are unadventurous, repetitive or downright repulsive. This might make for a boring or unappealing story.  The compromise is often to present an account of motivation that is simplified or falsified, yet within the conventions of commercial fiction.
In plot-driven fiction, the writer’s task is even more difficult.  What will happen in the story has already been determined, and it’s invariably something unusual if not bizarre: a string of murders, a kidnapping, an thwarted love affair.  Now the writer must make all this seem like the natural consequence of people acting in well-motivated ways.  I can’t claim to have always succeeded in tackling this problem. The only sure approach is to devise a plot which, in its basic conception, makes psychological sense even if it describes a series of events that would never actually occur. The conventions of each genre provide some cover to the writer in this regard.  Certain actions by certain types of characters have taken on the status of realism even though they never happen in real life.
Finally I should say something about likeability.  If you conceive of the story first, you might (especially if your imagination runs to the dark side, as mine does) end up with a bunch of characters that nobody likes. Why should the reader have to like the characters?  It’s a practical problem: the writer is asking you to spend several hours hanging out with these people.  If you can’t find someone you like, you’ll probably leave the party early.
But there’s something else going on here.  Apart from how the reader may react, I don’t see how any writer worth his salt could write a whole novel about people he doesn’t like.  (Some writers, such as Tom Wolfe, have done this, and I find their books unreadable.)   I would even go so far as to say that the writer must love his characters in some sense—even the bad ones, perhaps especially the bad ones.  They are his creatures and he must be able to look into their hearts with sympathy and understanding.  Paradise Lost began as a Christian epic but ended with Satan as its strongest character.  Was this because Milton was “of the Devil’s party without knowing it,” as William Blake suggested?  Or was it because Milton knew that Satan brought the main dramatic conflict to the story?  As a character he had to be worthy of our attention.  Not likeable, to be sure, but powerful and noble by his own lights—not a devil, in fact, but a fallen angel worthy of understanding and admiration if not sympathy.
In this sense every good writer, in his imagination, must be of the Devil’s party, whether he knows it or not.
YA Fantasy
Release Date: December 10, 2012
After uniting the shifters and calling in reinforcements, Chase has to face his toughest challenge yet: learning to control his emotions. But as tensions rise and his powers grow, controlling his emotions becomes the least of his problems.
Terrorized by a multi-shifter who is hell-bent on turning him, Chase questions just how far he’s willing to go to stop his father. Meanwhile, Tiki’s virtuous nature has placed him in the middle of Vincent’s past, leaving Chase to oppose a senate of vampires and defend a demon he hates.
Trying to balance his friends, his enemies, and his inner demons, Chase is left searching for answers about the Mark, his destiny, and where he can find the next soul piece. Stopping Riley is his top priority, but as more obstacles arise, he finds himself doubting all the decisions he’s made – especially regarding Rayna.
One thing is for certain: Chase has finally realized that he doesn’t know anything. The light doesn’t always quell the darkness, the monsters don’t always stay in the shadows, and the past doesn’t always stay in the past – sometimes, the demons inside are the hardest to fight.
When did you begin writing?
I’ve always loved writing, but I started writing fiction about two years before I published Exiled. That was the story that really just took me by storm and put the writing bug in me.
Have you ever been discouraged in regard to your writing ability and if so, how did you get past it and move forward?
All the time. I’m so back and forth with it, sometimes I think I’m crazy. Maybe that doubt comes with the territory? You’re always seeking the next level of validation.
What’s your favorite thing about writing?
I love being able to disappear into another world, and know there are no limits. Anything that comes to my mind, I can amplify and create into something bigger, scarier, more beautiful. I love that all I need is my imagination to fabricate something I *hope* people will enjoy.
What is your writing style? Do you like to outline or just write as you go?
This varies from book to book. I don’t know if it will always be this way, but right now I think I’m still trying to find where I fit. Each story requires something different, and I try to be relaxed in that approach.
Do you have a favorite spot where you like to write?
I love writing with my laptop at the kitchen table, after everyone’s gone to bed. Sometimes I get all cramped up there since my table is high, and then I have this really comfortable chaise lounger that I love to sit on. It’s perfect.
What is something you’ve written that will never see the light of day?
Any and all of the poetry I’ve written.
What is your writer food?
Cereal! And Candy. Specifically, Milk Duds.
What inspires you to write?
Everything. But the original inspiration came from telling my daughter bedtime stories. That’s what pushed me to try writing a book, and it’s what has kept me going. Those bedtime stories showed me a passion for story telling I never knew I had.
Would you say you relate to any of your characters? If so, which one and why?
On some level, I relate to all of them. But mostly, Chase. His mindset and thought process works just as mine did when I was a teenager. It doesn’t matter who tells you anything, you always think you’re right and you always learn things the hard way. Sometimes the really hard way.
What’s the hardest thing about writing for you?
Getting out of my own way. I over think things and get inside my own head. Regularly, it destroys all my motivation and takes me time to step back out and get into story telling mode. I really am my own worst enemy.
What authors do you like to read?
Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child, J.K. Rowling, and I’ve recently discovered a love for Stephen King.
This or that. Sweet or Salty?
Sweet!
If you were deserted on an island, which author would you want to be stranded with?
Either J.K. Rowling, or Stephen King. I’d have endless books…err sand-written stories?
Jurassic Wolves In The Ozarks? Giveaway, Review and Interview
The Wolf’s Moon by Patrick Jones
The Wolf's Moon
Dire wolf skeleton and mural, La Brea tarpits ...
Dire wolf skeleton and mural, La Brea tarpits museum, LA.jpg (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
These Dire Wolves really did exist four thousand years ago. They are double the size of the grey wolf. Their bones were found in the La Brea Tar Pit in Los Angeles. Why did they become extinct? Who knows?
Mark Lansdowne saw a sign saying Granny Barton’s Antiques. He was curious and stopped. He was just browsing when he spotted an old book and was drawn to it. He purchased it for five dollars and left.
He was reading the book, when the dogs, he had three named after the Three Stooges, growled and the hair on their backs rose . He went out, but saw only a pair of red eyes and smelled a scent of rotting meat. The red eyes drifted back into the forest as if they were never there.
As he sat drinking a cup of tea, he heard a scream. It could be anything, a wild animal. He decided he couldn’t do anything in the dark, so he’d check it out in the morning.
In the morning, Lansdowne checked around his pond and found something had come to eat or drink. Just the one with huge paws, but no nail prints. The dogs were with him, and these prints did not look anything like theirs. And then there was the awful smell , which he and the dogs followed.
His dogs all had something that distinguished them from each other. Larry was the biggest, Moe heard the best and Curly was the smeller in the group. Curly returned with a bone. It could only be human, it contained a screw. It was Janey Malone, the waitress at Barkers.
In Maple Hills, Missouri, it is such a small community that everyone knew everyone else. Barkers was the local gathering place. Farmers were talking about missing cows and deer hunters were seeing no deer.
Dave and Janey didn’t show up for work at Barkers. Now Myron Cox was missing, with just a trail of blood . Lansdowne called the sheriff. Sheriff Ralph Benson showed up. Morrison, a deputy was at the Cox home, investigating his disappearance, while Benson was at Lansdowne’s. Benson received a call from Morrison saying Christine McKay, from the Department of Conservation, had found Dave Morris, dead.
Benson joined up with Skruggs, Lansdowne’s lifelong friend, and Lansdowne to follow the smell to the cave. The woods were silent, no sound of squirrels or birds. The smell was stronger than before and he spotted a paw print that hadn’t been there earlier.
Months ago two girls had turned up missing from their rafting trip. He found a tennis shoe belonging to one of them. As they left the cave, Lansdowne said one of them had to stay in the area. He told them he would stay and protect what was left of Janey. grey wolf Pictures, Images and Photos
Lansdowne had climbed a tree with a view of the cave entrance. As the creature approached, Lansdowne came down from the tree to track it. The creature felt something was wrong and turned around. It had laid a trap for Lansdowne.  Now Lansdowne became the hunted.
The bite caused excruciating pain, but he was still able to kill the beast. He felt he was going to die.
When he came to, his pal, Skruggs, was there. He must have been at death’s door, because his wife, Glenna, had come to him telling him he must get better and move on. Mark seemed to be healing very quickly, he was hungry and anxious to go home.
As the sheriff and Lansdowne talked, Amy came in. She always cut his hair. She kissed his cheek and told “Mike” how glad she was he wasn’t dead. She looked to see if Benson caught what she had said.
The sheriff thought there were seven missing, but Lansdowne figured nine, maybe eleven. Too many in too short a time for it be done by one animal.
The carcass of the wolf had been taken in for examination. It was an extra-large wolf, even though there had never been any wolves in the Ozarks. It couldn’t be identified in any database. Where had it come from? Are there more?
Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos   4 STARS – Would Highly Recommend To Others
I won this book in a Goodreads First Read Giveaway. The author was gracious enough to autograph the book for me. Thank you. This is Patrick’s Jones debut novel and I feel he knocked it out of the ballpark. I can hardly wait to see what he comes up with next.
I thought it was going to be just another werewolf book, by the cover and title, but was very pleasantly surprised. The blurb made me a little more curious, but didn’t do the book justice.
It is about wolves that had gone extinct 4,000 years ago. I love creature books. It is so realistic and I can see how it could be true. With all the scientific advances of today, why couldn’t someone recreate a wolf? Jurassic wolves, what’s not to love?
The writing was excellent and the characters were well developed. I fell in love with Lansdowne and his “puppies”. He has an awesome best friend in Skruggs, now all he needs is a love interest, or does he already have one and not realize it? He thinks he hasn’t moved on from his wife’s death, but has this experience made him realize life is too short, you must live it, not just exist.
There is more than one mystery, and it seems Mark Lansdowne is not what he appears to be. This is a series and I am eagerly awaiting the next book, whether it is about how Mark came to be in Maple Hills, or about the wolves, I don’t care. I feel it can only get better. Soooooooo, write faster Mr. Jones. lol
Interview with Patrick Jones:  Hi Patrick. I want to welcome you to my blog and thank you for sharing with us.
Interview Questions:
  1.  What was the inspiration for writing about these particular wolves?
The Dire Wolf died out or went extinct around ten to twelve thousand years ago.  (Bones found in Arkansas were dated to about 6000 years ago).  If these dates are accurate, they lived alongside of prehistoric man.  Some scientists believe the Dire Wolf hunted in packs and they probably did, but skeletal remains at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, CA indicate that they may also have been lone hunters.  A grey wolf averages about  120–150 pounds, but can you imagine a wolf or a pack of wolves the size of African lions with three inch fangs?  Scary?  You bet!
  1.   Can you tell us about the cover and who designed it?  I feel these are always key elements to drawing a reader to the book.
My wife Sandy did the original cover but she was just never satisfied with the way it looked.  She always felt it could be better at grabbing the attention of the reader.  She subsequently designed 4 other covers.  It was not until this point that we both agreed on the cover.  The cover is one of Sandy’s pictures taken on the actual “Wolf’s Moon” in January 2012, precisely because that picture described a scary night.
  1.  What was the hardest part of writing the book?
The hardest part of writing the story was stopping to eat.  “The Wolf’s Moon” started out as a short story but took on a life of its own.  I attempt to write every day from 5AM to noon but in the case of this book, I just never noticed the clock.  On the days I could not write, for whatever reason, my mind kept going refining what was to come next in the story.
  1.  If the book was made into a movie, who would play Lansdowne and why?
Hmmm.  John Wayne?  Nope – dead.  Sean Connery?  Too old now.  Anyway, I couldn’t afford either one.  Then one day it came to me, the guy that played the part of the scientist in the TV program SG1, Michael Shanks.  He looks much like I imagined Linden to look and I think he could pull it off.
  1.  What do you do when you are not writing?
I love to hunt with my son, Patrick and my daughter’s son, Cody.  Fishing is great as is woodworking in my shop.  I work mainly with walnut and cherry.  Making a table or a bookcase out of either or both is so satisfying.  The best thing is to be with all of my grandchildren.
  1.  I am a bit of a car nut.  If you could own any car, what would it be?
We already own it!  A 2011 Camaro, black with black interior.  I love the 2001 Silverado Sandy bought me after nine-eleven.  The truck means a lot to me but we bought the Camaro as an anniversary gift to each other.
  1.  If you had 24 hours to be alone, go anywhere, do anything (money not an issue), what would it be?
I already do that.  I have a cabin tucked away in the woods in the Ozark Mountains.  The cabin is small and rustic.  No running water, no electric.  A couple gallons of water and a kerosene lamp and I’m set.  God has made many beautiful places on this planet but none more beautiful than the view of the glen from the cabin.
  1.  What are you working on now?  Would you like to share anything with us?
I’m working on the next book involving Linden and Skruggs right now, as well as another story without the guys.  There is one reader who wants to marry Linden and another who wants an introduction to Cindy Winters, and another still who wants to go to dinner with Amy.  It’s really flattering that readers get that deeply involved with the characters.  That means I did my job right.
  1.  Is there anything else that you would like to share with your fans?
When I have a reader that leaves a good review it makes me happy.  When I get a review that isn’t so great, I smile and remember that everyone is different and it is possible they are only looking at the story and not everything as a whole.  I am happy they read the story.  When I’m in the grocery store and someone wants to chat about the book, it’s a great feeling.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Patrick  Jones
Pat Jones was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. His special interests include the science of paleoanthropology and archaeology.
Woodworking is one of his favorite hobbies, with special emphasis on the unique grains and textures of various species of trees. He and his wife, Sandy, thrive on designing and creating a flower garden of perennials, second to none! Constantly evolving, the garden began as a way that he could surprise his wife on her birthday. The rest is history! The garden now spans one fourth of an acre!
When their children graduated from school, the couple relocated to rural Missouri where they now reside with their four dogs. The love of the area, in combination with the uniqueness of the people, provided the impedance for “The Wolf’s Moon”.
The sequel to “The Wolf’s Moon” is already in the works and proves to be yet another suspenseful page-turner! Pat believes that there is a story in everything. Everybody that he meets has their own special story; one simply has to take the time to listen. The story then writes itself.
Awesome in “BLACK” – Interview and Review
Black
by Charles Colyott
The old priest arose to do his duty to the Great Mother. He would not neglect her. The villagers demanded a sacrifice. No matter how much he tried to teach them of The Great Mother’s love, they would not give up their barbaric practices. When he reached the temple, he thought vandals had desecrated it, only to find it was worse than that – a sacrifice, it was his granddaughter. The Mother anointed him with his granddaughters ashes and told him it was time and proceeded to destroy the temple.
When he awoke, it was to find the villagers gone, only blood left behind. It was a new day, a prophet was born he thought as he walked away from the village.
Tommy’s girlfriend had dumped him and hooked up with Eric, a ghoul with ragged hair, greasy skin and clothes that looked like they were from Goodwill. Tommy and Eric had a couple of run-ins, but Tommy told him he really didn’t want Alyson back so he didn’t need to be jealous. Eric wouldn’t let it go.
Tommy and his friends went to the movies and when they came out, Eric and some skin head friends of his were waiting for them. As Bruce and Tommy managed to overpower the skinheads, Eric just stood and watched. When he heard the police sirens coming, he took off.
Tommy had taken the brunt of the fight. He had grabbed the knife being held on Coda with his bare hand. As the doctor was stitching it up, Coda had come in asked why he would do something like that for someone he didn’t even know. His response had been, there wasn’t anything else he could do. Tommy told Coda about his grandfather, a Taoist monk, who taught him martial arts and how he taught Bruce and some others and she was more than welcome to join them.
Alyson came to Tommy after Eric had given her a box to keep for him. She had opened it and what she had seen inside frightened her. She told them about Eric’s dark side and how he was into magic. She thought the book was a grimoire and it gave her the creeps. Tommy thought they should go see an old friend of theirs, Mike Ferguson, who might be able to help them figure out what the book was all about. They warned him not to let Eric find out he had it.
When Tommy and Alyson went back to Mike to see what he found out, Mike had a crazy look on his face. Mike was asking Alyson if Eric had any odd cuts or wounds, when they heard pounding at the doors. They exploded inward. The group was around the table which was surrounded by a blue line, a ward of protection. Eric appeared looking like a monster, with shapes carved all over his face,  even his teeth. He broke through the barrier and grabbed Mike demanding the book. When Eric grabbed Tommy, it was all he could do to remain conscious until something hit Eric and dropped him to the floor. Bruce stood there with a piece of railing in his hand. Alyson threw the book to Eric. As Eric said to tell them he was coming, he slit his own throat.
Mike, along with his goth girls were at Eric’s grave. When Tommy saw Mike, he told him to  enjoy what time he had left. What did he mean by that? The book Eric had was the worst, it dealt with calling the Nephilim. The prophecies had said Eric would return as the Prince of Nephilim. One of the rituals involved eating a fetus cut from the womb.
As Mike began telling them about his delve into magic, he had to show them examples and do a lot of explaining. Will Eric return as the Prince of Nephilim? What will he do it he does return? Would he destroy them or the whole world?
As the Peris, Mike’s goth girls, told the history of the First of the Host and the Great Creation, it made me think of the Charmed Ones, a TV program currently in re-runs. They mention the grimoire, the hollow, demons, vampires, ghouls………..
The characters:
Bruce and Tommy were good fighters, but they only used violence when necessary. Bruce was more of a goof off and Tommy was more serious, mystical even. Tommy was such a good guy. He knew he could take violence to a new level, but he tried really hard to control it. Bruce could go from a foul-mouthed, trash talking screw up to a sweet big-hearted teddy bear with Kung-fu. He did a great job of hiding his most intimate feelings.
Coda was a beautiful, loving, “good girl”. It was hard for her to go after what was right for her because she was always trying to do the right thing by others.
Eric was a rotten person even before he turned himself evil. He thought all humanity was shit.
Alyson didn’t care about anyone but herself. She had given Tommy his first kiss, she was Tommy’s first sexual experience, his first love and she betrayed him.
Dan was a spineless, rich boy who didn’t have many deep feelings. He had that rich way of assuming certain things would happen.
Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos    5 STARS – Would Buy it for Them (lol)
Dude – I am speechless – WOW – awesome. Amazing doesn’t even cover it. Knocked my f___ing socks off. I’m pissed at having to wait for the next one. I gotta have it and I want it now. I wrote those words as soon as I passed the last period of the book. I was very surprised that I liked it so much. I like reading this type of book, but I’m not usually so engrossed and excited by the story. After I was about halfway through I began to eat it up, as if I had been starving and the food was the words. Ate the words like M & M’s, my favorite candy. Even when the book was at it’s darkest, it could raise a chuckle out of me. The writing was great and it was hard for me to put it down. It surpassed a five-star review. I thought the cover was very interesting and the color combination caught my eye. The cover and title are things that influence me and I like when they pertain to the story. The story was definitely black and dark. The blood and gore I like usually comes in the form of a murder mystery, but the carnage in this book had me unable to put it down until I found a spot in the story where the action slowed down a little bit and I could take a breath. This is a must read on your list.
Interview – I am very excited to have Charles Black here as my first interview.
1.  Where did the idea for Black come from?
I wrote and drew a goofy comic book (featuring some of the characters) as an assignment for an art class in high school. I was a pretty weird kid, and I wanted to do something that would incorporate all of my geeky interests in comics, horror, music, martial arts, girls (heh) … at the same time, I’d heard the old adage ‘write what you know,’ so I started to sort of draw on my own limited experiences to flesh out certain aspects of the story. While none of the characters are based on real people, an awful lot of the story (minus the horror and kung fu, maybe) is based on actual stuff that happened to me or my friends.
2.  Who is your favorite character in Black and why?
I love them all, really. They’ve been with me for so long now that they’re like family. Most readers really love Bruce, and I do to… but I guess if I had to just pick one character I’d pick Tommy. He’s just stuck in a really crappy situation and does his best to do the right thing, whatever that is. There’s a very old fashioned sort of chivalry thing going on with him. And, c’mon, he’s a badass. He’s the guy I wish I’d been friends with in high school.
3.  How did you choose the cover and title? I personally feel these are key elements to making me pause when I see them and further checking out the book.
It wasn’t easy.
Early on, I tried to plot out how the whole series would work. I kept coming back to Black because there’s so much in the first book – whether it’s goth music, black magic, Alyson’s hair, etc. – that has that black-ish connotation to it. Ultimately, I settled on it when I realized that the final book could be White – which could be a kind of purity… or the Chinese color of mourning… – and make a Yin/Yang sort of thing.
The first printing of the book had a photo of an enormous sculpture that a friend of mine made specifically for the book. The sculpture was awesome… but it didn’t translate well as a cover image. For the ebook release I contacted Kealan Patrick Burke, an awesome writer who just happens to also be a great cover artist. It was tough… I mean, how exactly do you even begin to market an epic dark fantasy/martial arts/horror/romance/comedy without making it seem goofy?
4.  From idea to publication, how long did it take you to write it?
Phew… Well… Starting with the idea, in high school… I guess something like 14 years. There were several bumps in the road, though. For a short-ish time, I dated a girl who was totally not supportive of my writing. Then I had a roommate who accidentally deleted my original manuscript (that was probably a blessing, though it sure didn’t feel like it at the time). Then it was going to be a comic, but that sort of fell through. By the time I decided to just sit down and write it, it only took about nine months. I actually wrote the first draft on lunch breaks from a hellish cubicle job that I hated.
5.  What are you working on now? Would you like to share anything with us?
Lots of stuff!
I’m finishing up the final touches on Pressure Point, which is the second book in my Randall Lee Mysteries series. If you like the humor and martial arts stuff in Black, I think you’ll like Randall. He’s an American acupuncturist and Tai Chi practitioner who gets caught up in bizarre mysteries.
I’m also working on finishing up a book called I’m The One, which is an homage to teen romantic comedies, John Hughes, and alternative music.
Then I’ll be working on Down, which is the second book in the Nephilim Codex series.
All three of those should be available before the end of the year.
I’m also working on Attrition, a horror collaboration with Glen Krisch. If you haven’t read any of his books, I highly recommend checking him out.
6.  Do you have a favorite place to write or any ritual you go through in preparation for writing? Do you listen to music, use the computer or pen and paper?
In terms of place? Not really. I used to be fairly particular, but I got over it. I think a lot of writers tend to ritualize things. That’s not necessarily bad, but it can be if you use it as an excuse not to write!
I do need music, though. I tend to plot out little “soundtracks” to my projects as I’m writing, for inspiration (many of these are actually on Spotify, if anybody cares to hear them).
7. Who is your favorite author? What is you favorite book? What are you reading now?
That’s tough. I have too many to name, probably. Stephen King, of course. Neil Gaiman is a huge inspiration to me.
Right now I am juggling Super Gods by Grant Morrison and Draculas by Blake Crouch, Jack Kilborn, Jeff Strand, and F. Paul Wilson.
8.  What do you like to do in your free time?
I don’t have a whole lot of free time. I write, work in a book store, teach English, and raise alpacas (and now, apparently, sheep… which was news to me).
When I’m NOT doing those things, I like spending time with my wife and two daughters. I like watching movies (especially – shocker – horror and Hong Kong action movies), being an obsessive music snob, and practicing a little Tai Chi.
9.  Can you tell us something personal about you, the person?
I actually like lima beans…
10. Is there anything else you would like to share with your fans?
Having fans is a little strange. I prefer to have friends, so feel free to look me up on twitter or facebook. I love hearing from my readers.
Fun Facts:
Margarita or martini – Throw in a mojito, and it’s a deal. 😉
M & Ms or Skittles – Depends on my mood, I think.
Dog or cat – I like both, but I’ve never NOT had a cat.
Football or Baseball – Soccer?
Rock and Roll or Country – Rock and Roll
Summer or Winter – I live in Southern Illinois, so either one is miserable. You either get hot and crappy or cold and crappy. If we were talking San Diego or something, I’d pick summer.
About the author
Charles Colyott lives on a farm in the middle of nowhere (Illinois) with his wife, 2 daughters, cats, and a herd of llamas and alpacas. He is surrounded by so much cuteness it’s very difficult for him to develop any street cred as a dark and gritty writer. Nevertheless, he has appeared in Read by Dawn II, Dark Recesses Press, Withersin magazine, Horror Library Volumes III & IV, Terrible Beauty, Fearful Symmetry, and Zippered Flesh, among other places. He also teaches a beginner level Tai Chi Ch’uan class in which no one has died (yet) of the death touch.
You can get in touch with him on Facebook, or email him at charlescolyott@gmail.com.
Unlike his llamas, he does not spit.
