I was drawn into the Roma Series because of the fabulous covers and the storyline.

It made me think of Kathy Reichs and the the TV series, Bones, with her forensic anthropology, only for a character that specializes in forensic accounting.

MY REVIEW

I love the concept for Roma, Underground by Gabriel Valjan…a woman on the run and an investigator and archaelogist on a treasure hunt…of sorts.

If you like procedural novels, Roma is for you. Gabriel Valjan allows Bianca to take us step by step through her investigation, though there is more than one mystery going on.

Want to visit Roma? See some sights? Eat some great food…and lots of it? Then lets follow Bianca as she helps her ‘boyfriend’ solve the mystery of who is smuggling stolen historical artifacts out of the country.

Bianca’s step by step digital search and quick mind will have her ‘gang’ tiptoeing through danger as she tries to avoid discovery from her past employer, a covert US organization. I like that her investigation mirrored a forensic murder investigation, just surfing the internet instead of dissecting a body. She makes me think of Penelope Garcia on Criminal Minds. You must find the parts and pieces and put them together.

Gabriel Valjan is very detail oriented in his descriptions of places and food. He takes us Underground, through caves, and dining in restaurants, showcasing the food enough to make your mouth water. My only complaint is sometimes the details dogged down the pacing, slowing the story and losing the sense of suspense and danger. This could be because I am an action junkie!!!

I questioned how I would get through the entire series, but the deeper into the story I went, the more involved I became. I was already interested in Bianca, but the peripheral characters grew around her, creating their own dilemmas that drew her in, bringing with them an increasing sense of danger.

Roma, Underground’s mystery is wrapped up nicely, but Bianca’s story is still left to our imagination…or the next book, Wasp’s Nest. Thank goodness I do not have to wait, because the entire series is available.

As a freelance journalist and columnist for the local afternoon newspaper, the Albuquerque Chronicle, Pitcairn often received unsolicited mail. In this case, he immediately recognized the name of Daniel Davidson. He knew all about the case. Davidson was convicted for the murder of four of his six Texas victims after protracted delays for psychiatric evaluation. During that time, the state of Oklahoma had opted not to prosecute him for the murder of a seventh victim. But after those many lengthy delays, he was remanded to the custody of the state of New Mexico for trial in the murder of a seventeen-year-old Santa Fe high school girl.

That final proceeding was notorious for ending without a conviction two weeks before. Unlike the Texans, this jury had bought the psychological evidence. Their decision was greeted with derision and accusations of racism from the northern New Mexican, Hispanic community to which the young woman belonged. The police had to quell a near riot. Now Davidson was to be returned to Texas to await execution.

Davidson’s case was unusual. Despite the efforts of anti-death penalty agitators to appeal his case in Texas on psychiatric grounds, especially in light of the New Mexican decision, the murderer requested that his sentence be carried out as soon as possible. Oren turned back to Wonder and spoke gently. “First, little one, I must tell you that you are not Wonder.”

“I don’t get it,” he said with a scrunched up face.

“Your name may be Wonder, but Wonder you are not.” He studied the kid, watching for any signs of dawning comprehension. Wonder cocked his head to one side, still puzzled, and the old buck continued. “The form you find yourself in is that of a goat, but you are not a goat. Oren fell silent, waiting.

Wonder blinked—once, twice—and then said, “Got it!”

Sorry fellow bloggers, but I didn’t have a chance to do a 56, so I am sharing my review for Celeste Files: Unforgotten by Kristine Mason…and her new release.

If you love a realistic paranormal novel…you’ll love this stand alone series!

Kristine Mason’s paranormal suspense novels for the Celeste Files series have amazing covers and a fantastic subject matter, so I am very happy to be sharing my review for the third book in the series, Celeste Files: Unforgotten, with you today. I will also be sharing the cover and blurb for Book IV, Celeste Files: Poisoned below, so be sure and check that out too.

MY REVIEW

I am a huge fan of Kristine Mason, a MUST READ author for me. With the latest novel in the Psychic Core stand alone series, Celeste Files: Unforgotten, I am carried deeper into Celeste’s world. The stories will stand alone, but I believe you will love the books so much, so you will want to start at the beginning.

Again, I am captured from the opening pages.

What do a toy clown, a toy bear and a toy cowboy have in common? You’ll have to read the story to find the answer.

The dead talked to Celeste, but this time they came to her daughter, Olivia. Celeste’s husband, John, is not a fan of her gift, so I wonder how he will handle this new development. He is a wonderful man and I have a lot of faith in him.

Celeste sees Olivia, playing with her ghostly friend. She had known the chances of Olivia being psychic were great, but she never had never prepared herself for it. She’s just a baby, not even two years old. What do they want with her?

She found Livy in Sophie’s room. Sophie is Jessica and Dante’s missing daughter. If you would like to know what happened to her, check out Ultimate Fear by Kristine Mason. That is a fantastic story of its own and may draw you into another of her series, The Ultimate CORE trilogy, romantic suspense at its finest.

We also now have a dog entering the picture and I love it. Ruth has joined their family because of the dangerous trances Celeste goes into when the ghosts come a calling. Ruth does double duty, also being able to sense when a ghost is present.

I love all the complex characters I have watched grow and develop, adding kids and partners to their growing family.

I love the sexual banter between Celeste and John. But, drat, those pesky ghosts seem to pop up at the most inopportune times. It’s often funny, as they grab intimate moments here and there.

The realistic relationship between them is not all roses and sunshine. John is a man’s man, a protector of women and innocents. He is a man of science and facts, not the supernatural. His biggest problem is being unable to help or take away the visions and pain. He feels helpless, yet he is always there.

There is a new development with Celeste’s gift and I can see Kristine Mason taking us into a new direction. I am so looking forward to watching Olivia grow up.

Celeste Files: Unforgotten by Kristine Mason has everything I LOVE in a paranormal romance thriller. Visions, ghosts, hauntings, vengeance, romance, a serial killer, murder…She sprinkles bits and pieces of goodies ( some of you may not call them goodies) throughout the story and they make me smile, yell, gasp and ooh and aah.

I first became familiar with Ken La Salle when I read his hilarious tale of Cookies: Sluts of the Snack World. As I read more of his work, I think there is no genre that he cannot conquer.

Now…I would like to share his latest: Once Removed by Ken La Salle.

The cover makes me curious, but also I begin to wonder…why were the letters hidden? Why were they never sent?

Red Queen is the first book in the series. I was so lucky to have won an ARC copy some time ago, can’t remember exactly where. So…I have decided to include a quickie review to see if I can entice you to read on and maybe grab a copy for yourself..

MY REVIEW

Last year, Red Queen was everywhere, so of course, I wanted to read it. I had heard mixed things about it, so it made me want to read it even more. I do find it has a common theme, but I have not read a lot of the series reviewers compare this too, so I do not see it quite like they do.

We must remember we are reading a young adult novel, so we know there will be a triangle with a young girl caught in the middle. Yes, she will have much to overcome, having to make some hard choices and fight for her survival.

I did not read anything earth shattering or mind blowing, but I loved the story all the same. The great writing brought the characters and their world to life. Betrayal and lies, the false fronts and masks people wear, whether to protect themselves or fool others, had me guessing the outcome. Do we ever know anyone, what goes through their minds, their thought and feelings? What mask do you wear?

Red Queen had me thinking twice and that rates a recommendation to all you young adult, paranormal and magic lovers out there.

His expression darkened even more, and invisible lightning snapped across Morgan’s skin. The bathroom was too small for both of them and his magic. Another snap of lightning and her newly manifested gorgon powers exploded over her eyes, rushing out of control across her cheeks.

Shit.

She squeezed her eyes shut and jerked to face the shower stall, away from Gage. Fiery tears threatened to seep from beneath her lashes, and every muscle grew tight with the effort to hold it back. Shit shit shit.

“That was Loric on the phone,” Gage said. His voice sounded so far away and hushed against the rushing in her ears. “We have to report to the Council.”

“Okay.” She sucked in a ragged breath. One of the tears inched closer to release.

“You all right?” He stepped close. The heat from his body and the tingle from his power brushed her senses, and her hold on her powers trembled.

“Fine.” The tear broke through and traced a searing line down her cheek. She caught it in her palm before it hit the floor and exploded into a drop of granite dust.

“Morgan?”

“Just give me—” She forced her shoulders into a roll, trying to loosen the muscles. Logically she knew if she relaxed so would her powers, but the other part of her — probably her human part — screamed with panic. Don’t kill anyone. Again.

“Focus on my voice,” he said, his tone softening. “Draw in a slow breath.”

She inhaled.

“That’s it. Relax, Morgan.” His tone shifted — or was that her imagination changing it? It was now sensual, slick, sexually charged. “Relax, Morgan.”

Desire shuddered through her, and Lachlin’s unwanted fae charm billowed, achy and needy inside her. Her powers flared again. Gage stood so close, too close.

“Morgan.”

Another shudder and burst of power. Two more tears slid from her lashes. She wiped them away. She was going to kill someone or destroy the building they were in, and Gage wasn’t helping. “Please. Just step back.”

“You can control it.” He slid a hand up her back.

Her muscles contracted. Desire and fire roared through her. It forced her eyes open, burst through her sunglasses, and slammed into the shower door. It flash-froze to stone and cracked. She wrenched her glasses off and pressed her palms to her eyes before the door exploded. When her power was this out of control, things tended to erupt into granite dust, not just turn to stone. She’d gotten lucky with the door.

Gage’s fingers tensed on her shoulder, and her powers seared her hands.

“Stop touching me.”

His hand and the sense of him vanished.

“You’re getting stronger.” It sounded like his voice was all the way across the room. “And unstable. Your powers shouldn’t be this unstable.”
