In Memorium – A Salute to the Blue Angels

pensacolabay6516CR

Memorial Day has come and gone, but I would still like to take a moment and thank all those who have served and sacrificed to preserve our way of life.

blueswatertower6516CRPensacola is the home of the Blue Angels, so they hold a special place in our hearts, here in the Florida Panhandle. I have seen their shows over and over again, from Flint, Michigan to Pensacola, Florida, and I never cease to be amazed at their skill and love of flying.

Unfortunately, accidents happen, whether during an air show or during a training mission and two such events are currently on the news. I am surprised that more accidents don’t happen, considering how often our service men and women are training or serving in one capacity or another. I think that says a lot about them and their abilities.

jeff kuss pilotA special thank you goes out to Marine Captain Jeff Kuss, 32, who has been flying as one of the two solo pilots for the Blue Angels. He paid the ultimate price when his jet crashed as the Blues were preparing for an air show in Tennessee. My heart goes out to his wife and children.

The last Blue Angel crash was in 2007 and to me that shows us how very good these men and women are at what they do. Not just anyone can become a Blue Angel. They have stringent requirements and qualifications to meet, but their biggest hurdle is the team, who are the ultimate power when it comes to choosing their teammates.

The Blue Angels shows have been cancelled for the foreseeable future and they will be missed.

Pensacoleans are showing their “colors” on the 17th Street Bridge, which is also known as Graffiti Bridge. The City allows its people to paint the bridge and most of the artists are very respectful. Every so often they paint over the bridge and the artists begin anew…painting everything in sight…from the rocks, to the poles, to the bridge itself.17thCR2

Mr Wonderful and I saw photographs on Facebook, honoring our fallen soldier, and we knew we had to pay our respects. So we hopped in the car and drove downtown.

In honor of Jeff Kuss…

fallenblueangel6516CROur hearts and minds are with you Blues!

As we were driving home, the weather was warm and rainy and I marveled at the display that nature was providing. The sky is a wondrous place.

Book Blast – Schism @BrittHolewinski

SchismbookblastSchismcover“Schism” is the first book in a new dystopian trilogy that tells a tale of survival, of good versus evil, and of constructing a future with only memories of childhood.

A government-created virus is accidentally released before testing is complete and within weeks it kills six billion people, children are the only survivors. Andy Christensen and her two friends travel across the country searching for a safe place to live, but nowhere, it seems, is capable of resurrection.

“SCHISM is an engrossing page turner that skillfully deals with dark subject matter in a compelling, through-provoking manner…The writing is crisp and clear, and the novel’s details are well-researched, down to the names of local roads and landmarks and the types of technology used by the survivors.” -IndieReader.com

“This apocalyptic teen drama’s character interactions may draw readers in, but its vigorous story will keep them hooked.” – Kirkus Reviews

Mardi Gras Disaster in This Would Be Paradise by N D Iverson

With the recent passing of Mardi Gras, there is no way I was going to miss sharing This Would be Paradise by N D Iverson. All I can say is, “I got out just in time”.

BBT_ThisWouldBeParadise_Banner copyThis Would Be Paradise by N. D. Iverson

GENRE: Post-Apocalyptic

MediaKit_BookCover_ThisWouldBeParadise

BLURB:

In a world where a virus has spread turning most of the population into flesh eating monsters, there are two friends partying it up in New Orleans when the infection hits. Far away from home, they are trapped and trying to make sense of all that has happened with the help of new friends and enemies along the way. Zombies aren’t the only thing to fear…

EXCERPTS:

The doors opened with a buzzing sound. The main lobby was devoid of people; even the receptionist behind the front desk was gone. Usually there was at least one person standing there with the phone glued to an ear. Did I sleep through a fire alarm or something?

I slowly made my way to the buffet area, looking around for a sign of life. Everything was set up but looked like it hadn’t been touched. Strange, considering it was already afternoon. Normally stale cereal and that one scary looking sausage that seemed to have been there all week would be all that was left by now.

I poured myself some coffee from the giant stainless steel percolator, watching the steam waft up from the foam cup. The smell alone helped invigorate my dulled senses. Sipping the hot liquid, I started to look around to figure out what was going on and maybe see about some maid service. We weren’t messy people, but somehow our hotel rooms always managed to look like a disaster zone – overflowing garbage, towels on the ground, running out of the mini-shampoo bottles sized for the head of an infant.

All the tables in the dining area were open, no one sitting around enjoying the mediocre hotel-provided food. I felt my hackles rise. Usually there was at least one person or group in here at all times. A noise that sounded like someone eating caught my attention and I stepped over to the booths that lined the wall.

“Hello?” I called out as I rounded the tall booths.

The sight that greeted me was not what I had expected. A woman covered in what appeared to be blood, was kneeling over a larger mass on one side of the booth. Her shirt was torn down the front revealing her daisy spotted bra and deep scratch marks on her chest. She snarled at me, flecks of whatever she’d been eating spraying from her red stained lips. I took a big step back.

She slowly got up from the booth, all her attention now focused on me like I had just insulted her outfit. I could see the thing she was on before much more clearly now. Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit! It was a man. There was a gaping hole in the body cavity, knotted intestines dangled down the side. I retched at the sight. Did I unknowingly step onto the set of a horror movie?

The woman had managed to get herself out of the booth, slipping a little on the blood coated floor. The coffee fell from my hand, as she started toward me, her face contorted into a feral mask. I took off running back the way I’d come, my earlier fatigue forgotten as adrenaline pumped through my veins.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

  1. D. Iverson is young author trying to find her niche in the world. She has a business degree; to which she is still trying to find a practical application for. She has bounced from half-baked ideas of becoming a forensic pathologist (cut short when the option for attending an autopsy came up and she rather quickly decided maybe that wasn’t for her), a member of a rock band (sadly, neither her nor her friends could play instruments or sing, not that it’s a requirement these days…) and many more.

This Would Be Paradise is her first completed book, which has started a chain reaction of one-too-many book ideas dancing around in her head. Bookworm Lisa – Inspiration for The Long Way Home

“The Long Way Home began germinating in my mind after I visited the Andrew Wyeth exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and studied the paintings on display about which I would write a review in my weekly fine arts column in the Times of Trenton newspaper. The image of Christina Olson dragging herself uphill in Wyeth’s painting Christina’s World haunted me. I saw it as a figurative painting and yet as a still life. Her life had been stilled by her unexplained disability.”

Beck Valley Books – Excerpt from The Long Way Home

Callie screamed and jumped back. She ran out of the room, slammed the door and, with all her weight against it, looked frantically around for some way to keep it shut. There was nothing. The door didn’t have a lock and there was no furniture close enough to push against it.

Christy’s Cozy Corners – Time Passes

“Time passing is something that is an integral part of the story in ‘Someday, Maybe’ and in ‘Moving On’, too. We never know what is going to happen to us. Everything changes – or does it?”

I Am A Reader – Excerpt from Someday, Maybe

When he’d first seen her, a neat, spriggy little thing, she had worn her hair in tight, dark pigtails, and he’d liked that. When she had grown up and had it cut in a fashionable sort of style he’d been a bit disconcerted, but as time had gone on she had let it grow a bit and some- times put it up so that it sat on her head like a plump, soft, scented cloud, and he had loved it. Today, so early in the morning, it was tousled, unwashed and unbrushed and smelled of the cold morning and of chicken feed, but he didn’t care. He adored it.

In a ramshackle old cottage with an outside lav, and a rickety ladder up to a draughty attic bedroom, Jim and Mary Norris slog in all weathers to make a living from their market garden, and to bring up their little girl, Patsy. But at times Jim’s guilt is overwhelming as he watches his beloved Mary working her frozen fingers to the bone, almost dropping with weariness – not exactly what she’s been used to in her genteel upbringing as the niece of well- off local gentry, who cut her off when she married “beneath her”. But she never complains; she loves Jim madly and they are blissfully happy together.

Until her accident – and the nightmare that follows them all through the next 30 years. Mary’s gradual descent into madness overshadows even Jim’s second marriage and children, but the shocking climax is something no-one could have foreseen.

When Murder Calls by Emelle Gamble

I would like to welcome Emelle Gamble and her novel, when Murder Calls, to fundinmental.

If you are a cozy mystery fan, this is an author you will want to check out.

Just looking at the wonderful cover drew me in.

MY REVIEW

When Murder Calls by Emelle Gamble is a cozy mystery that twists and turns and kept me guessing, my curiosity rising as the suspense builds. Who is the Grim Reaper?

Megan is a single parent with two small children and with a serial killer on the loose she is concerned for her children’s safety. Dead bodies are piling up around her and she should be more careful about who she trusts.

I think Jack is in for a surprise when he meets Megan.  They are drawn together, but Jack is hiding something. She has freed herself from a bad marriage and does not want to go down that road again.

As if a serial killer and a questionable man in her life aren’t enough, her ex husband and his fiance appearing on her doorstep is the last thing she needs. I can imagine how the anger threatened to overwhelm her, but she would not break down in front of her children. I love that Megan put them front and center.

Dean, the on again off again dad, suddenly appearing pissed me off more than the Grim Reaper. He thought he could drop in and play dad in complete disregard for Megan, not even giving her a heads up. I was super ticked and I couldn’t help but laugh at myself.

Mystery, murders, a single woman with two small children struggling to finish school and create a better life for her and her kids, a hot looking man wanting to share that life, what more could we want in a cozy?

A serial killer is on the loose from the opening pages. I love serial killers. Several suspects pop up early, but I keep thinking they are too obvious. The suspense was slow boiling, but  Emelle kept me guessing and the pacing picked up as I neared the end.

When Murder Calls by Emelle Gamble is one of those of books where I would think it’s over, then something else would happen, then I would think it’s over, then something else would happen…The action and suspense continued into the last pages. I would have liked to have more of an ending, but I know all I need to know and I am good with that.

Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos  4 Stars

SYNOPSIS

From Goodreads:  Megan Summers, TV-ratings coordinator and single mom to two, was just getting her life in order when a killer – dubbed the Grim Reaper by the media – donned a badge and caused chaos in the cozy ocean side hamlet.

Everyone one she knows feels like a suspect, except for attractive new employee Jack Gallagher. Despite his odd obsession and his hidden agenda, he gave Megan support, shelter, and some romance she didn’t think she wanted.

But was the haven of his arms enough to shield her from the Reaper?

This cozy romantic suspense was originally published by Harlequin Intrigue in paperback.

ABOUT EMELLE GAMBLE

Emelle GambleFrom Goodreads:  Emelle Gamble was a writer at an early age, bursting with the requisite childhood stories of introspection which evolved into bad teen poetry and attempts at ‘real literature’ all copies of which she has since, very sensibly, shredded. She took her first stab at romantic fiction in an adult education writing class when her kids were in bed, taught by fellow writer Carolyn Haines, in Mobile, Alabama. As M.L. Gamble, she published several romantic suspense novels with Harlequin. She is now contracted with Soul Mate Publishing for Secret Sister, summer of 2013, and Dating Cary Grant, an early 2014 release.

Always intrigued by the words ‘what if’, Emelle’s books feature an ordinary woman confronted with an extraordinary situation. She most enjoys reading stories that surprise and amaze her, and hopes her readers will enjoy the challenging and exciting journeys her characters take.

Emelle lives in suburban Washington D.C. with her husband, Phil, her hero of thirty years, and two orange cats, Lucy and Bella. Her daughter, Olivia, and son, Allen, are happily launched on their own and contributing great things to society, which has always been their mother’s fondest wish.

13 tales of terror.

13 tales that will have you reaching for the nightlight before you go to bed tonight.

If you want to be afraid, I mean very afraid, of the night, a dark country road, a drag race, vampires and werwolves, the beach…well, Anthony Renfro covers them all.

Don’t turn out the lights, do snuggle up with a friend and get ready for a wild ride.

My overall rating for the anthology is 4 STARS!

US  /  UK  /  AU  /  CAPaperback

The following are three of the horror shorts that I had not reviewed.

The Man From The Road by Anthony Renfro

The man was curious. Too curious. This three page horror short (in paperback) took me from, “You should have known better,” to “Whew, that was a close one,” to “Most excellent. You got me Anthony.” LOL Love it. 4 Stars.

Sandy and the Stranger by Anthony Renfro

Who doesn’t love a fast car, great music and the ghost of a legend, such as James Dean. A glimpse into people’s true character. If you could get away with embellishing the outcome of an event in your life, would you?  3 Stars

Need To Feed by Anthony Renfro

Think you know all about vampires and werewolves, think again.

The sheriff met the Lizard brothers on the street at high noon. He had no fear. He is faster and has won all the duels so far, but tomorrow would be different.

Living on the coast of California was a brutal life. The remaining residents, survivors of battles fought, were preparing for the ultimate showdown. The first full moon in June would test the heroic sheriff when the bloodthirsty and savage monsters Need To Feed brought them to Saltwater Junction.

I love the original and fresh look at vampires and werewolves. The attacks are brutal and nothing is held back.

I felt like I was there, shooting vampires, watching heads explode and blood and guts spatter, wondering who would be left standing. 4 Stars

Excerpt from Need to Feed:

The house appeared to be silent, but he thought he heard something, something low and almost inaudible coming from one of the bedrooms.

It was a sucking sound, like something feasting.

He made his way towards that sound, boots clicking on the uneven hard wood floor, spurs jingling, hoping he wasn’t right, but pretty sure he was.

He stopped at the door that led into the Master Bedroom, and listened again. Sure enough, the sound he was hearing was coming from this room. He held the holy water vial up, and popped the lid off with his thumb. He aimed his gun forward, and slipped into the room.

The first person he saw was Bob, lying on his back on the floor, and on top of him was a Vampire, fangs sunk into the man’s neck, sucking him dry. The Vampire was so engrossed in his feast that he didn’t hear the sheriff move in behind him.

While this Vampire fed on Bob, the sheriff looked across the room, and sure enough Linda was lying on her back with another Vampire on top of her, fangs sunk into her neck.

The sheriff was surprised to see these two out so late, because night weakened them considerably; it didn’t hurt them or stop them, but it was sunlight that truly gave them strength.
