GREAT Grand Finale – The Recipe Tour for Emergence by Rachel E Fisher

I have loved participating in this tour. If I had not done so, I never would have met Rachel  E Fisher and Fi. That would have been my loss. Thanks so much for having me!

Emergence (Eden's Root Trilogy #3)

Emergence

Eden’s Root Trilogy #3

by Rachel E Fisher

RELEASE DATE: APRIL 30, 2013

“I promise you, Sean. We’re going to stop them.”

The pieces on the board are in motion and with both sides gathering strength, each move will be critical. When the Truthers make a play for checkmate, the Seeders are forced to respond. Fi and her companions will face greater challenges and higher stakes than ever before, because this time if they fail, it’s for keeps.

Seeds of War (Eden's Root trilogy #2)

Seeds of War

The mission of Eden must be fulfilled and Eden’s best Seekers are needed. Forming a new group they dub the Seeders, Fi, Asher, and Sean are joined by a new addition as they set out to bring hope and support to the Topsiders in the form of radios and heirloom seeds. Their experiences Topside prepare them for the threat from marauding gangs they call Lobos, but it is a different, less obvious sort of threat that takes them by surprise. As radio broadcasts begin to reconnect Eden and the Topsiders, the Seeders stumble upon mysterious broadcasts from unknown stations. When two of their own new radio stations go silent within days of each other, Fi and her companions realize that something is terribly wrong. Eden finds itself pitted against a growing and unknown force as their very mission lights the flames of war.

Eden's Root

Eden’s Root

It is 2033, and the world hovers on the edge of explosion as unexplained crop deaths lead to severe global food shortages. In the United States, the Sickness is taking lives slowly, creeping its way into every family. Fi Kelly has already faced the Sickness in her own family, toughening her beyond her years. But a shocking confession from her dying father will push her toughness to its absolute limits. Saddled with an impossible secret and the mission of saving her little sister, Fi sets out to transform herself into the warrior that she must become to survive the coming collapse. Along the way, she will discover that evil can be accidental and that love can be intentional.

I am a wife and entrepreneur living and working in Florida. I am also a graduate of Mount Holyoke College, where I majored in Biology. It was always my assumption that I would end up making research my life. Though it did not work out that way in the end, my passion for Biology remains intact.

I have always loved biology-based science-fiction and the young adult genre. It is in this vein that I offer my work.

In Rachel Fisher’s dystopian world, natural grown food has turned to poison or died before it can produce fruit. This idea was partly inspired by her own life and the necessity of creating vegan and gluten-free meals.

I’ve never thought I would be looking forward to the ending to a series as much as this one. This dystopian novel drew me in from the start with it’s believable story of how a world changed by just having a few changes done to food we grow.

Ah, it’s so  nice to re-connect in real life with the people we learn to love and appreciate and the same is true with the book series we read. Fi and Asher, Sara and Sean, and many of their friends have stuck in my mind and it was a real pleasure to see them again…

The storyline seems so real to me… I always wonder what is happening to us right now. How many times have we been told something is good, only to be told ten years later it causes cancer, or something else.

I also really enjoyed how Rachel Fisher looked at the way people can change when they really aren’t given another choice if they want to survive, no matter who they started out as.

25 – LeeannaMe –  Review of Eden’s Root

The thought that messing too much with our food, trying to feed more people with less, and that we’re using too much technology without thinking about it is kind of scary. The author develops this idea pretty well, giving easily understandable scientific explanations

Marked by Books – Review of Seeds of War

Man, this book was deep. It explored a lot of very prominent philosophical issues, like the nature of humanity, in a way that made it applicable not only to the events in Seeds of War, but also to our own world.

Diary of a Book Addict – Review of Emergence

First off I have to give a huge I mean HUGE Thank You to Rachel Fisher for giving us a great series. I have been reading this series since day one and this is a bitter sweet goodbye…

26 – LeeannaMe – Review of Seeds of War

In SEEDS OF WAR, we learn a bit more about how the Famine was engineered. Yeah, I said engineered. I won’t spoil the details for you, but I could see something like it happening in real life someday, which is also scary.

Fundinmental Review of Seeds of War

I read this slower than usual, devouring every word. It reads more like a history book than fiction, and my mind keeps reaching, trying to figure out what I would do in a situation like that or like that. These books will stick with me for a very long time.

Marked by Books – thoughts on cooking

My personal favorite recipe is actually not one of her copycat recipes, but something she came up with on her own. It’s a deep-dish cookie pie. So what’s the catch? IT’S MADE OUT OF CHICKPEAS!

27 – LeeannaMe Review of Emergence

The other thing I really liked about EMERGENCE was Fi’s character development. Fi has come a very long way from the girl she was in EDEN’S ROOT. Though she’s been kick ass throughout the trilogy, I did have trouble believing adults would listen to a fourteen-year-old. InEMERGENCE, Fi questions that herself, something I appreciated it. But even better was watching her crack, the strain of losing Eden and her family too much to bear after all the other hardships she’s suffered. Fi emerged from the “nothingness” (her term for depression) an even stronger character, and I liked seeing her vulnerable, because that made her even more kick ass and realistic to me.

edensroot-recipeChocolate Protein Mousse28 – TheBookish Daydreamer – Review of Eden’s Root

The whole time while reading this novel, I worried. This extreme realism was terrifying and made me question everything.

Get Skinny / 2 large old bananas 1 cup of quick oats. You can add in choc chips, coconut, or nuts if you'd like. Then 350º for 15 mins. THAT'S IT!29 – GreenMountain Couple

I also believe that this book hits home with me and our lifestyle because my husband and I are preppers. We prepare for the worst case senario, we have stored canned goods and even a bucket of food. We are working on saving heirloom seeds to plant again in garden next year.

I found this recipe on Pinterest.

Ingredients

2 Large Bananas

1 Cup of Quick Oats

Then add in things like Chocolate Chips, Shredded Coconut, Nuts, Dried Fruit… Anything you Heart Desires really.

These are must haves in the Blackburn home. These bad boys are so simple to make they are unbelievable. Partner with the sauce and you have a great entertainment appetizer.

Basically, the Brown Sugar Smokies are bacon wrapped mini sausages that are wrapped in a quarter slice of bacon and coated with brown sugar. The sauce also has 3 simple ingredients of mayo, brown sugar and bottled bbq sauce. Yep, it really is that simple!

So, here we go!:

Sausages:

Ingredients:

1 pound bacon
1 (16 ounce) package little smokie sausages
1 cup brown sugar, or to taste

Directions:

1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2) Cut bacon into thirds and wrap each strip around a little sausage.
3) Place the wrapped sausages on wooden skewers, several to a skewer.
4) Arrange the skewers on a baking sheet and sprinkle them liberally with brown sugar.
5) Bake about 30 minutes or until bacon is crisp and the brown sugar melted.

brown sugar sauce

Sauce:

Ingredients:

1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup barbeque sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar

Directions:

1) Stir together mayonnaise, barbeque sauce, and brown sugar in a small bowl until the brown sugar has dissolved. Chill while smokies bake!

 BLURB

Riviera Benson has a talent…one she discovered by accident. She’s a painter, but canvas isn’t her medium. She creates her lovely masterpieces on walls and ceilings of million dollar homes as murals and faux finishes. Her art is in high demand now, but life wasn’t always that way. Riviera has secrets from her past she intends to keep tightly locked away…terrifying secrets that keep her awake at night…that prevent her from getting close to anyone…anyone that is, until she meets Shan.

Benjamin Shandon, owner of Shandon Homes, works like a thousand demons are chasing him…because perhaps they are. His business has boomed, ever since the forest fire swept through the canyon and destroyed hundreds of million dollar homes. He demands excellence in everything…from his employees to his women. He slows down for nothing, keeping a schedule that no sane person would want. But Riviera interrupts everything, twisting his guts inside out, and wedging her way into his heart, destroying a promise he made to himself.

Will they let their pasts control their future, or will they decide to let go and allow their hearts to discover each other’s?

 About the Author

A.M._HargroveOne day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn’t do something soon, it would quickly be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life. So, she rolled down the passenger window of her fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase. Luckily, the pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodge ball pro and had über quick reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head. Feeling a tad guilty about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what lap top out the window. She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone, called her boss and quit her job. Grinning, she made another call to her hubs and told him of her new adventure (after making sure his heart was beating properly again).

So began A. M. Hargrove’s career as a YA/NA and Adult Romance writer. Her books include Kissing Fire, Edge of Disaster, Shattered Edge, the series the Guardians of Vesturon (Survival, Resurrection, Determinant, Beginnings and reEmergent), Dark Waltz and the upcoming release Tragically Flawed.

Other than being in love with being in love, she loves chocolate, ice cream and coffee and is positive they should be added as part of the USDA food groups.

BLURB

A novel of madness, music — and murder.

A beautiful opera singer hangs herself on the eve of her debut at the Met.  Seven years later the opera she was rehearsing—Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffmann—begins to take over the lives of her two schizophrenic children, the doctors who treat them and everyone else who crosses their paths, until all are enmeshed in a world of deception and delusion, of madness and ultimately of evil and death.  Onto this shadowy stage steps Nicole P., a graduate student who discovers that she too has been assigned a role in the drama. What strange destiny is being worked out in their lives?

 EXCERPT

Nicole had mixed feelings about going home after two weeks at the Institute.  She occupied a dingy garret in a dark rambling house that had been converted to apartments, overseen by a nosy landlady named Mrs. Gruber who owned several cats but never seemed to feed them.  One bright spot: the computer was still on, waiting faithfully for her return.   The screen was blank but all she had to do was touch the space bar and a magic technicolor world rose up before her.  Out of habit she opened her “Things To Do” folder.  Most of it was out of date now—unminded reminders, dead deadlines, pointless appointments.  With one sweep of the mouse she consigned the entire contents of the folder to the trash bin.  It was a grand feeling, having nothing to do, but it was short lived.  Now the computer stared at her with a gaze blank and pitiless as the sun.  Tentatively she started typing:

Bread, milk, eggs, corn flakes.

Pick up dry cleaning.

Find a thesis topic.

Keep from going crazy.

Let’s put that one on top and keep it there.  Thing To Do Numero Uno:  Keep from going crazy.   But how?  Much as she liked Dr. Hoffmann, she wanted to accomplish that particular Thing To Do in her own way, without any help from the pharmaceutical industry.  She reached in her purse and found the pills he’d given her, and without thinking very much about it she ran into the bathroom and flushed them down the toilet.

Now, she thought, I’m on my own.

BRUCE HARTMAN discusses how he comes up with story ideas and characters.

I usually start out with a concept rather than characters. Then I try to imagine characters and situations that fit that concept.  There’s an old adage that the story begins when the conflict begins.  In other words, you have to conceive the story as a conflict between characters.  For this you need characters who contrast in important ways, such as age, gender, occupation, ideology, family status and social position.  Apart from such characteristics, something in the story concept must put the main characters in conflict with each other.  This is best envisioned as a clash of goals.  Each of the main characters should have a primary goal, consistent with their defining characteristics, which brings them into conflict with the other characters. This goal may arise out of an existing relationship or the events of the story itself.

The approach sketched above isn’t the only way to write a novel.  Many writers start with a strong character and let the plot take care of itself.  Even with that approach, however, the story typically emerges from the clash of this character with others who stand opposed in some way.

Whether the characters emerge from the story or the other way around, the writer’s most important and difficult problem is the characters’ motivation.  “Realism,” if it means anything, means realistic motivation.  This is critical in commercial fiction: readers simply will not tolerate characters doing things that don’t seem properly motivated.  In theory, if the writer follows the characters into the story, motivation shouldn’t be a problem: the characters will only do what is well motivated.  In practice, human motivations are never as unambiguous as readers of fiction might prefer, and they often lead to actions that are unadventurous, repetitive or downright repulsive. This might make for a boring or unappealing story.  The compromise is often to present an account of motivation that is simplified or falsified, yet within the conventions of commercial fiction.

In plot-driven fiction, the writer’s task is even more difficult.  What will happen in the story has already been determined, and it’s invariably something unusual if not bizarre: a string of murders, a kidnapping, an thwarted love affair.  Now the writer must make all this seem like the natural consequence of people acting in well-motivated ways.  I can’t claim to have always succeeded in tackling this problem. The only sure approach is to devise a plot which, in its basic conception, makes psychological sense even if it describes a series of events that would never actually occur. The conventions of each genre provide some cover to the writer in this regard.  Certain actions by certain types of characters have taken on the status of realism even though they never happen in real life.

Finally I should say something about likeability.  If you conceive of the story first, you might (especially if your imagination runs to the dark side, as mine does) end up with a bunch of characters that nobody likes. Why should the reader have to like the characters?  It’s a practical problem: the writer is asking you to spend several hours hanging out with these people.  If you can’t find someone you like, you’ll probably leave the party early.

But there’s something else going on here.  Apart from how the reader may react, I don’t see how any writer worth his salt could write a whole novel about people he doesn’t like.  (Some writers, such as Tom Wolfe, have done this, and I find their books unreadable.)   I would even go so far as to say that the writer must love his characters in some sense—even the bad ones, perhaps especially the bad ones.  They are his creatures and he must be able to look into their hearts with sympathy and understanding.  Paradise Lost began as a Christian epic but ended with Satan as its strongest character.  Was this because Milton was “of the Devil’s party without knowing it,” as William Blake suggested?  Or was it because Milton knew that Satan brought the main dramatic conflict to the story?  As a character he had to be worthy of our attention.  Not likeable, to be sure, but powerful and noble by his own lights—not a devil, in fact, but a fallen angel worthy of understanding and admiration if not sympathy.

In this sense every good writer, in his imagination, must be of the Devil’s party, whether he knows it or not.

On a hot summer day in Central Florida, a young man discovers a bloodied body in a field behind the repair shop where he works. Grisly and twisted, the body leaves few clues as to the offender, some questioning if such a horrible end could actually come at the hands of another. The young, struggling writer with the crummy landscaping job who found the body never expected what his find would lead to, nor the friendship he would develop with the fellow writer and crypto-zoologist interested in the case and pressing for answers. Together, neither of them could have guessed the incredible gift they would receive in their budding friendship, the invigoration to their writing, or the heart-stopping experience they would ultimately share.

Amazon Book Blurb:

When teenagers Harland Jacobs and Jose Rodriguez crashed a wedding, they weren’t doing anything terribly wrong. Jose only came because his nagging mother made him. Harlan only joined him to make it tolerable for his friend – and the free food, the girls and the dancing, of course. And they took full advantage too, eating, laughing at the guests behind their backs, and in the end, were planning to make complete fools of themselves. Why not? What did they have to lose? But they never dreamed this wedding would have taken such a staggeringly horrific turn. They never dreamed they would be fighting for their lives in this lodge tucked away in the woods. They never dreamed they would have heard so much screaming on a wedding day either.

Amazon Book Blurb:

The world is a funny place with funny people and some things just happen for no reason at all. Still, every family deserves a vacation, a break, even when times are tough and backs are against the wall. Daniel, a recently out-of-work family man, is returning home with his wife and child from a lovely prescheduled vacation before they must face the harsh reality back home. What they would never have expected was the surreal nightmare they would experience on their journey back.

Because of Ian’s dark history with Celeste’s family, a history she knows nothing about, he sends his top criminalist, former FBI agent John Kain to investigate.

John doesn’t believe in Celeste’s mystic hocus-pocus, or in her visions of the murders. But just when he’s certain they’ve solved the crimes, with the use of science and evidence, more dead bodies are discovered. Could this somehow be the work of the same killer or were they dealing with a copycat? To catch a vicious murderer, the skeptical criminalist reluctantly turns to the sensual psychic for help. Yet with each step closer to finding the killer, John finds himself one step closer to losing his heart.

 EXCERPT

The Heroine

Fingers clawing at the sheets, tearing them from the mattress, Celeste Risinski woke with a scream. Panicked, disoriented, she shoved at hands she swore still gripped her. As she struggled, she knocked the alarm clock from the nightstand. When it hit the hardwood floor, the radio blared. The loud music, laced with crackling static, startled her.

She whipped open her eyes, relief slowed her racing heart as she looked down at her body, to where her arms and legs were tangled in the thin sheets and comforter. Brutal hands weren’t holding her down. She wasn’t in the woods. She wasn’t fighting for her life. She was in her bedroom, waking up from another nightmare, another look into hell.

Dragging in a deep breath, she pulled herself to the edge of the mattress, bent and retrieved the clock. After turning off the radio, she placed it back on the nightstand, then wiped tears from her face she didn’t remember crying.

No, not true. In her nightmare, she’d cried and screamed, begged and pleaded, while trapped in the body of another woman. She hated the way her mind had been sucked into the woman’s soul. She’d experienced every ounce of the terror, and even the pain the woman had endured. She rubbed her neck where the phantom cord had been wrapped during the dream. Even though she was blessedly free of the nightmare and sitting in her bedroom, claustrophobia wrapped tightly around her, making it difficult to breathe.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

A year after a barbaric childbirth, complete with a near-death experience and an encounter with her guardian angel, Angie Edmonds is just happy she and her son, Jake, are alive.

She’s finally in a good place: clean, sober, and employed as a defense attorney.

But at the end of a long work day, she finds herself in a parent’s worst nightmare: Jake has been kidnapped and taken across the Mexican border by a cult leader who believes the child is the “Chosen One.”Stymied by the US and Mexican legal systems, Angie is forced to ask the head of a Mexican crime syndicate for help.

Much to her chagrin, she must work with Alejandro Torres, a dangerously attractive criminal and the drug lord’s right-hand man.

Little does she know Alejandro is an undercover federal agent, equally terrified of blowing his cover–and falling in love with her.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Obsession authorHeadshot_3Sharon Buchbinder

I’ve been writing fiction since I was in high school and have the rejection slips to prove it.

After I graduated with a BA in Psychology and no job, I realized my dreams of working in the attic writing great prose would have to take a back seat to the simple pleasures of eating, drinking, and having a roof over my head.

Fast forward a few decades, and I had a career path that would make all but the kindest say, “What were you thinking?” After working in health care delivery for years, I became a researcher, then an academic. I had it all– a terrific, supportive husband, an amazing son, and a wonderful job. But that itch to write (some call it obsession), kept beckoning me to “come on back” to writing fiction. I spent one whole month away doing nothing but writing fiction, the first of many drafts of my first novel.

My genres include horror, mystery, romance and weird blends of the three. For a sampling of my work (fiction and nonfiction), click on “Stories and Links“.

When not attempting to make students and colleagues laugh, I can be found herding cats and dogs, golfing, deep sea fishing, or writing.

Sharing The Sunshine

Marny Copal nominated me for the Sunshine Award. Marny has written Freeblood, vampires and witches, oh my. You can learn about Marny at her blog or Goodreads. To check out her book on Amazon, just click on the cover.

Thank you for the award Marny. I love it. Isn’t it pretty?

The Sunshine Award is presented to “bloggers who positively and creatively inspire others in the blogosphere.”  I love spreading the word about the books I read, the authors I meet and whatever else I think is interesting. I am surprised and humbled by the award.

Here’s how it works (and feel free to adjust as necessary):

1. Announce your win and link back to the person who nominated you.

2. Display the award logo on your blog.

3. Answer the list of questions. (You have two choices here: Kimberly’s questions or Honoré’s. Or feel free to mix and match.)

4. Nominate ten bloggers for the award and link to them.

5. Let the bloggers know you’ve nominated them.

Kimberly’s Questions

What inspired you to start blogging?

My sister Laura at fuonlyknew. She introduced me to Goodreads and the blogging came right behind it.

How did you come up with the name of your blog?

I wanted something simple and a play on my name, thus fundinmental.

What is your favorite blog that you like to read?

I would have to say it is Laura’s, my sister. She always has a new book or author to expose me to. She is great with interviews and very creative with her questions. There is always something going on over there. Be sure and stop by to check her out after checking out Marny.

What is your dream job?fort pickens biking

Retirement, so I have the freedom to do whatever I want. I love wandering, whether it is on location or in my own backyard. I never go anywhere without a camera and book on hand. I love sitting on the patio, reading or blogging, taking a dip now and then to cool off.

Is your glass half full or half empty?

Half full. I love my life.

If you could go anywhere on a week’s vacation, where would you go?

I love the Caribbean, but have been wanting to go to the Keys for a very long time.I don’t have a lot on my bucket list, but the Keys is somewhere I feel a kinship to.

What food can you absolutely not eat?

Shellfish. I have an allergy to them. That’s funny, living on the Gulf Coast and can’t eat shellfish. ^_^

chocolate candy photo: candy chocolate-candy.jpgDark chocolate or milk chocolate?

Milk chocolate is my favorite, but there is no such thing as bad chocolate. M&M’s. MMMMMMMMMMMM

How much time do you spend blogging? In other words, are you one of those lucky people who can dash off a blog post in no time, or do you take forever on one post to get it just right?

It usually takes me a while. I tweak and tweak. I want it just right and always feel a little flutter in my tummy when I push the publish button and run to the post to check it again. LOL But, if I need to get it done and quickly, I can do that too.

Do you watch TV? If so, what are some of your favorite shows?

All right, I confess. I am a TVaholic. I am watching NCIS as I write this and it is 8AM on Memorial Day. I’ve probably only seen this episode once or twice. lol I love sitcoms, like Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls, 2 1/2 Men….The Mentalist, CSI, all of them, Perception, Person of Interest, Supernatural…..

Honoré’s Questions

Favorite color:   Probably my favorite would be blue, but I love red,. I do plant a lot of red flowers.

Favorite animal:   I’m a dog lover, but don’t want the pet commitment at this time. No critters allowed.

Favorite number:   9, It is variations of 3 – 3×3,6+3,3+3+3…..

Favorite non-alcoholic drink:  Water.

Facebook or Twitter:  Superbrain, my hubby, started me a Facebook account a while ago. I don’t do a lot on Facebook, so I’d have to say Twitter.

Your passion:   Reading and photography, not necessarily in that order.

Grey Heron by Sherry J. Fundin. All Rights Reserved.

Giving or getting presents:   I am awful about both. I think you live every day and I don’t feel a need to celebrate gift giving only on holidays. If I want to give someone something, I don’t need a reason.

Favorite day:   A sunny and warm one.

Favorite flowers:    I love a profusion of color and a faint aroma that rides on the breeze. I seem to pick mostly red. No specific favorite.

Drum roll, please. My nominations for the Sunshine Award are:

Laura at fuonlyknew

Taylor Dean

Bette Lee Crosby

Emily Guido

Donna L Sadd
Please accept the nomination in the spirit in which it was given. Some prefer not to post awards on their blog or have already received this award. No problem! I’m simply happy to share your website with others.
