My 56

“Now you listen here, boy,” he snarled, “I accept there’s something strange about you, probably nothing a good beating wouldn’t have cured – and as for all this about your  parents, well, they were weirdos, no denying it, and the world’s better of without them in my opinion – asked for all they got, getting mixed up with these wizarding types – just what I expected, always knew they’d come to a sticky end-“

Book Beginnings

Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you’d expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn’t hold with such nonsense.

GOODREADS BLURB: Harry Potter’s life is miserable. His parents are dead and he’s stuck with his heartless relatives, who force him to live in a tiny closet under the stairs. But his fortune changes when he receives a letter that tells him the truth about himself: he’s a wizard. A mysterious visitor rescues him from his relatives and takes him to his new home, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

After a lifetime of bottling up his magical powers, Harry finally feels like a normal kid. But even within the Wizarding community, he is special. He is the boy who lived: the only person to have ever survived a killing curse inflicted by the evil Lord Voldemort, who launched a brutal takeover of the Wizarding world, only to vanish after failing to kill Harry.

Though Harry’s first year at Hogwarts is the best of his life, not everything is perfect. There is a dangerous secret object hidden within the castle walls, and Harry believes it’s his responsibility to prevent it from falling into evil hands. But doing so will bring him into contact with forces more terrifying than he ever could have imagined.

Full of sympathetic characters, wildly imaginative situations, and countless exciting details, the first installment in the series assembles an unforgettable magical world and sets the stage for many high-stakes adventures to come.

  1. Hi Sherry,

I must be nearly the only person on the planet not to have read a Harry Potter book. We did watch the first film when it came out, but it really wasn’t my kind of thing and I’m afraid it rather influenced my decision about giving the books a wide berth.

Even my mother-in-law, who is in her 80s, has read and enjoyed the entire series, so perhaps I should give Harry a re-think, although with all the accolades he has gone on to achieve, I’m sure he won’t notice my missing reviews !

There’s nothing like straight talking is there? The lines from page 56 would have surely upset your normal grieving teenager surely?

Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend 🙂

    Yvonne

  2. It took me forever to get around to reading this book because I’ve never been much of a paranormal person and all the wizarding stuff had no appeal for me but I ended up absolutely LOVING it. Such a wonderful read. Thanks for sharing!
