Prime Suspect by Lynda La Plante has been made into TV, movie and video game adaptations. The Granda Television series starred Helen Mirren.
This is the cover for the mass market paperback I have that was published in 1993.
My 56
Kernan cleared his throat. “OK, I’ve gone over all the reports on the Marlow case and it looks in good shape. I think, when I’ve had time to assess it all, we can go ahead and charge him. But until that decision is made, and I know time is against us, I am bringing in another DCI to take over. You all now Detective Chief Inspector Tennison…”
(Page 56 in paperback, published in 1993)
Book Beginnings
Mrs. Corrina Salbanna was woken from a deep sleep by the sound of the front door banging in the wind. She squinted at her bedside clock; it was almost two. Swearing in her native Spanish, she threw off the bedclothes and stuffed her plump feet into her slippers.
My question to you: Do you think she’s a bitch? Why or why not?
GOODREADS BLURB: In the dark night of the soul . . . . If Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison hadn’t been a woman, she might not have noticed the victim’s shoes . . . . and that they didn’t match the size given on the info sheet now so obviously misidentifying the dead blonde as a hooker named Della Mornay. Being so through, so good at the details, made Jane a top investigator; being a woman made the boys in the squadron want to see her fall on her face. But Jane Tennison was determined to catch the madman stalking women in London’s street shadows. She had a prime suspect, and she needed to make the charges against him stick. She also needed to keep her own secret in check: she couldn’t let anyone see that she was falling apart inside, as her obsession with cracking this case and breaking out from under the heel of the station house boy’s club took over life, destroying her relationship with the man she loved, pushing her closer and closer to the dark urges of a killer . . . .

WHICH COVER WOULD YOU CHOOSE, Including the one above?
Oh the shame… I’ve never heard of this one! But yes! Want to read it. Love what you did with this post, including the different covers and all. I like the audio one most. Thanks for sharing this one! Will look into it right now. Here’s my Friday Meets: http://marelithalkink.blogspot.co.za/2016/09/friday-meets-another-one-down-drain.html
Thanks Mareli. I have been spending a little more time blogging and trying to add a personal touch. Sometimes I am just too busy to go the extra mile. 🙂
This sounds good. I like the middle cover the best.
I’m not sure, but my tattered copy has that retro look and I think it fits the story well.
I love Helen Mirren, yet haven’t seen this show. Or read the book. The character is not a bitch…she is simply passionate and driven. A man with those qualities would be applauded. Don’t you think?
Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog.
Yes, a man would. I think men are threatened by a strong woman and I find the character one I can really relate to.
Oooh! The audio cover! I like the audio cover!
Great choice!
I love anything with Helen Mirren.
I think she looks great in this, that’s for sure!
I haven’t heard of this book or the author before. Looks interesting. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
My pleasure Breana.
Funny, so famous and yet I’d not heard of the book, movie or game until now… lol
Sounds good though!
Happy Labor day weekend!
I probably grabbed it at the used book store and sale at the library. My copy is pretty beat up. LOL
Wow books, show, and games yet I have not heard of this. Interesting excerpt. Thanks for sharing! Happy Friday!
I know what you mean, Nicole. I was surprised how famous the story was too.
Thank you for including the trailer. I haven’t seen this show, but I’m sure I’d enjoy it. Now when I read the book, I’ll visualize Helen Mirren as Jane.
Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving a comment.

Nice. Then my job is done. LOL Thanks for stopping in.
I had no idea that the show was based on a book – I want to read and watch them now! 🙂
Check out my Friday 56 (With Book Beginnings).
Then my job is done. LOL
She sounds like a really strong, determined character. Hard not to admire that. Although, the men in that little clip look like the disagree. Happy Friday!
I think they resent a woman getting the job. That whole macho thing is going on. 🙂
I’ve heard of the tv series but have never had a chance to see it and I’ve always wanted to because of Helen Mirren – I didn’t realize it was based on a book series – I like both the beginning and the 56 – this sounds like a book series I would enjoy reading so I’ll have to add it to my list. I like the last cover on the lower right the best – the one where the bottom part is red with yellow lettering – and no I don’t think she is what the man called her….lol…here’s my Friday meme
I think that’s a great cover too, but I like the retro look of the top cover. Has the old time feeling to me. Glad to help you add to your reading shelf. 🙂
I have wanted to read this since I first seen it on TV! 🙂
