The fabulous cover for Barrier Island by John D MacDonald, along with the Gulf Coast setting, would make me pick this one up. A peaceful looking cover hides a mystery inside.
John D MacDonald passed away 25 years ago, but his books are very popular to this day.
The barrier islands along the Gulf Coast play an important part in the ecology of the area by protecting the coastline. The repercussions for destroying the barrier islands can affect, not only the coastline, but the wetlands they help create.
I wish I had a big giant cover to share..
My 56
“You can be good, or you can be lucky,” he said. “Me, I’ll take lucky.”
(Page 56 in my 1st edition hardcover, published in 1986)
Book Beginnings
A night bird winging back to one of the islands made a harsh sobbing cry as it passed near a small cruiser anchored well to the south of the channel, The sound brought the owner up out of sleep, wrenching him out of his dreams into a moment of confusion before he sorted his world into the small realities of time and place.
My question to you: Do you feel lucky…punk? LOL
GOODREADS BLURB: There are two kinds of men in Mississippi. They make natural enemies. And sometimes, but only if the balance between strength and weakness tips too far, unnatural allies.
Tucker Loomis is a hard and dangerous man with a ruthlessness all West Bay fears and respects, and an improbable amount of money. Wade Rowley is a common man who aspires to honor but gets caught up in the footwork of a skilled swindler.
.In a pitiless game, with a few harsh rules and just one way of keeping score, the wrong man will die. And another will get away with more than murder.
“Lively, gritty . . . complex and convincing . . . Mr. MacDonald writes with passion!” The New York Times Book Review

WHICH COVER WOULD YOU CHOOSE, Including the one above?
I thought I had read everything John D. MacDonald wrote but this one doesn’t sound familiar. I’m off to Amazon to see if I can get a copy. My pick this week is Stalking Ground by Margaret Mizushima – newly released mystery. Happy reading!
I used to go to the library and grab every book an author had on the shelf. I found so many new authors and books that way.
Now have I to read this author!
My Friday 56 from Bloodmark
You know me…I’m a sucker for a pretty cover.
Friday 56 sounds like a lot of fun. Next year my Friday’s will be full, but if this is still going strong in 2018, I’ll definitely be doing it. 🙂
Sometimes I skip it because I have so much going on, but it’s a great way to post ahead and share some older books on my shelf.
Sounds like a great read. Love the line from page 56! 🙂
I’ll take being lucky over being good any day of the week. LOL
I love the cover you presented…the others are too busy, IMO.
This one sounds good…thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.
I like the cover you chose, the purple one interests me as well with “The Murder Room”! Thanks for stopping by my blog
The cover you showed cased totally. That one is my favorite by far of all of them.
That 56 is fun, I am a goody two shoes always have been but being lucky would be nice.
I haven’t read anything by John D. MacDonald. In fact, this is the first I’ve heard of him, so thanks for mentioning the book. 🙂
I feel very lucky lol… sounds good! Happy weekend!
Hi Sherry,
I have never read any of the books by this author, but after checking him out using your Goodreads link, I realised that he wrote ‘Cape Fear’, although I have only ever watched the film version.
The only part of the Gulf Coast I am familiar with, is around the Tampa / Clearwater Beach areas, which are indeed very lovely.
Maybe this is an author I need to read at least once, as I enjoy this style of gritty writing, I love the opening lines you shared and as an eternal pessimist, I guess I would probably take good over lucky 🙂
Have a great weekend and ‘Happy Reading’
Yvonne
What sass in that 56! I wonder if his confidence will pay off or not. Happy weekend!
I need to read more of MacDonald!
Not heard of this author but I liked that teaser! Need to check this one out! 🙂
To this quote I would guess I usually choose GOOD. My luck tends to run out pretty fast.
