GOODREADS BLURB

A tale of stolen souls, mirror worlds, quantum physics and eternal love.

There’s a serial killer on the loose and Angel Copperwheat knows his name, but the murderer is long dead and using Angel to power his quest to become a God. The police think Angel’s the murderer and maybe he is?

Angel lives on the bubble-thin surface of what we call reality, surrounded by ghosts and the fractured moments of potential futures, living in more than one world. Angel has spent his life studying quantum physics, the magic of shamans, religions and myths and the threads that bind them, seeking the science of death and the afterlife, believing that nothing is inexplicable, merely unexplained, and always in hope of finding the answer to his biggest question, why me? Since he was a child, newly returned from the dead, Angel used his abilities selfishly, meddling with time and space in search of elusive happiness and the love he feels he doesn’t deserve.

The Reverend Forster, Vicar of St Swithun’s, knows who Angel is and what he is. Forster has tapped the cracks Angel opened in reality and used it to steal souls from the living, taking their power to fuel his quest to become a God. The empty bodies have been possessed by wandering ghosts and now Angel’s dull English home-town is a mess of blood, rape and murder. The dispossessed souls have charged Angel with putting the universe to rights. Can Angel close the rift, restore lost souls to life, remain alive and keep his darkest secret, while holding on to the hard-won love of his friends in the now, the past and future?

That’s why I added Entanglement by Maya Panika to my reading list on 10.6.12..and it was free. Now, it is available for $2.99 and it is the only book I see that she has ever written, which was published on 6.19.12. Is she a one hit wonder? On hiatus? Living life? Hmmm…could that be a story, What Even Happened To Maya Panika? Any thoughts?

One Sentence Review – Pawned by Laura Bickle @Laura_Bickle

.

Pawned is not my first book by Laura Bickle and it won’t be my last.

Pawned

Amazon / Goodreads

MY ONE SENTENCE REVIEW

Pawned by Laura Bickle is a wonderfully done fantasy of angels and demons, dragons and the mob, and the humans that inhabit a richly developed world, where everything revolves around Raz, his cousin, Carl, and Bert, a demonic lizard, and the magical pawn shop that he lives in, where things are sold and bought, and traded for favors.

Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos
4 Stars

GOODREADS BLURB

For fans of Stranger Things and the works of Neil Gaiman, Pawned is a Young Adult novel that blends dark fantasy adventure and noir — on the New Jersey boardwalk.

You can hock almost anything at my family’s pawn shop…even your own soul.

You think running a pawn shop full of cursed objects with your dad and grandpops is cool? Try it for a week and get back to me. Now try picking up any random object and seeing its creeptastic history play out right before your eyes — yup, that’s my little “gift.” It’s my job to sort out what’s haunted and hexed from what’s not, and do my best to keep all of us — including Bert, our ice-cream-truck-driving-lizard demon — employed.

So it wasn’t all sunshine, roses, and possessed samurai swords even before grandpops’ heart attack — but now things are garden-gnome levels of bad. Dad made a deal with the wrong end of the dark side to save grandpops’ life, putting my whole family smack dab between the forces of evil and our friendly local blow-your-pawn-shop-to-smithereens mobsters. And Lily next door…I shouldn’t even be thinking about Lily.

All I ever wanted was to get out of this crap town and away from my messed-up family, and instead it looks like I’m gonna have to use every scrap of magic in this joint or there won’t be any family left to leave behind…

The Dark In-Between
Elizabeth Hrib
Published by: Swoon Reads
Publication date: May 5th 2020
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

Action-packed and emotionally powerful like big- and small-screen hits such as The Sixth Sense and Supernatural, The Dark In-Between by Elizabeth Hrib is sure to stay with you long after the lights go out.

Something lurks in the shadows between life and death.

A terrible accident brings sixteen-year-old Casey Everett’s life to a halt—literally. Pulled from the water, Casey is rushed to the hospital and miraculously revived. But her sudden return to the living is shadowed by the drowning of her best friend, Liddy.

Overcome with grief, Casey returns home for the summer only to find the memories of the accident won’t let her go. Shadow-drenched nightmares. Whispers in the back of her mind. Her friend’s screams. Casey thinks she’s losing it… until she watches a boy fall from the sky.

Red—an angel fallen to earth to regain his wings—takes her to Limbo, a place that exists somewhere between the living and the dead. Now, in order to save her best friend, Casey must learn to walk these mysterious and dangerous paths or else risk losing Liddy’s trapped soul to something worse than death.

EXCERPT

Casey paces the length of the hall, studying the pictures on the floating mantels on the wall. Most of them are of Evan. There’s some of her too, standing with a younger Evan, their faces wind- kissed, freckled, and crazy- eyed due to copious amounts of sun and sugar.

Casey touches the photo. Her parents had still been alive then.

She follows the tarnished silver frames through a scrapbook of her youth. There’s her and Evan as babies, sharing teething rings. As toddlers, sharing chicken pox. As cubby neighbors in elementary school when they swapped lunches almost every day. Liddy had moved to town in the third grade, got assigned the coat hook directly between her and Evan, and the three of them had been inseparable ever since.

Until now.

The door pops open and Evan kneels, lacing up a shiny black shoe. When he straightens up, she gets a proper look at him. He’s wearing a black dress shirt tucked into gray pants. There’s no tie but he looks . . . good. All sleek lines and sharp points and soft blue eyes.

“You can say it,” Evan says.
She snaps back to reality. “Say what?”
“That I clean up nice.” He tugs on his pant leg. “Even my socks match.”
Casey huffs and turns away as warmth floods her cheeks.

She’s been flirting with this line for a while now. These feelings. That space between friendship and more than. It’s not the right time to cross it. She knows that. Not while they’re both missing Liddy. Honestly, she’s not really sure if there ever will be a right time. Maybe the history between them is better left this way.

“You look nice, too,” he offers. “I meant to say it before.”

Then he goes and says things like that, and Casey’s unsure of everything all over again.

“These are my funeral clothes,” she says, trying to dismiss his comment. She picks at the hem of her dress, crumpling it in her fist and then pressing it back into smooth lines against her thighs.

Evan sighs, hands in his pockets as he sways into the hall. “You can still look nice.”

“Come on,” she says, turning down the stairs. “You’re making us late.”

He follows her to the car and climbs into the passenger seat.

Beside him, she fumbles with her buckle, the nerves start- ing to return. It feels weird being in the car without Liddy calling dibs on control over the radio.

If I have to hear any more of Evan’s easy country listening, she’d say. I’m gonna lose it. He’s like a little old man in the body of a teenager.

The memory almost makes her laugh, but she catches her- self. Casey stares at the radio, then looks away, struggling under the weight of such heavy silence.

Evan reaches over, his hand nudging her shoulder. When he pulls away, he twirls a feather between his fingers and flicks it out the window.

Demon Hunter – This Time by Azaaa Davis @AzaaaDavis

.

This Time by Azaaa Davis is a wonderful adventure into the supernatural, fantasy world of of Nadira Holden, Demon Hunter.

I love this great cover and Azaaa Davis has done a wonderful job of branding the series.

Cover by Zei Llamas at Deviant Art.

This Time

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

The awesome cover for This Time does not foreshadow the terrifying opening pages. Are you claustrophobic? Afraid of being buried alive?

Nadira is a warrior, a demon hunter, but there is more than meets the eye to her since her resurrection.

Humans and the supernatural world existed side by side. Would they live to regret it? Can you ever trust a demon?

Is she their secret weapon?

Jamie is a character I quickly became enamored with. She takes all the abuse Nadira heaps on her with a smile on her face. She wants to be her friend. She’s got her back whether she accepts her help or not. I become more and more curious about her and what will become of her. I love when an author creates a minor player that becomes as important to me as the main character.

This Time was a nice surprise and a bit different kind of demon/human and other supernaturals in a battle between good and evil. Nadira is a fascinating character and, while I wonder where she will end up, I feel she couldn’t get there without Jaime.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of This Time by Azaaa Davis.

GOODREADS BLURB

Resurrected into present-day New York, Nadira Holden is asked to save the world … again.

Nadira achieved legendary status when she gave her life to protect humans from the demons. To her, it was yesterday. To the rest of the world, it was twenty years ago.

People have made peace with the demons, worshipping them like celebrities. No one wants to believe that the beautiful creatures who brought magic to humans could be causing the disappearance of so many. When Nadira’s father goes missing, she refuses to play nice. Gloves off. She has to do what she does best. Fight.

Experience why not even death can stop her.

Nadira Holden, Demon Hunter is a fresh urban fantasy series from Azaaa Davis that combines monster-slaying action, family drama, and simmering romance.

Fans of Vampire Hunter Anita Blake, Succubus Georgina Kincaid, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and Vampire Death Dealer Selene are enthralled and eagerly awaiting the next Nadira Holden novel.

WHAT? – House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas @SJMaas #HouseofEarthandBloodexcerpt #NetGalley

.

Sarah J Maas has been an author that I have wanted to read more of for some time now. When I saw this on NetGalley, I quick clicked it, BUT…

House of Earth and Blood - EXCLUSIVE EXTRACT

Goodreads

MY REVIEW

Every so often, I hop over to NetGalley to see if there is a book there than I must have. When I saw House of Blood and Earth, Crescent City #1, I immediately clicked and was approved for this exclusive extract. I was disappointed, because I clicked so quickly, I didn’t realize it wasn’t for the completed novel. 🙁 I have my fingers crosses that I’ll get a copy, because the ending was to die for.

It took me a while to get involved, as Sarah J Maas introduced the characters and the world they live in. The more I read, and the more I got to know the characters, the more deeply involved I became…BUT, be careful who you become attached to, because the ending blew me away and took me in a direction I didn’t see coming, which Sarah did in a bloody and twisted way. I applaud her.

I think we have every supernatural entity that you can imagine, and maybe some you can’t, along with humans. They walk side by side…

I flip back and forth between 3 and 4 stars…because of that ending. One way or another, I will get me a copy. I have to know!!!!!!!

New Release – The Celestial Assignment by Theresa Braun @tbraun_author

.

I first read a Theresa Braun novel, when I read Fountain Dead. See my review HERE. I can’t remember how I got my hands on the book, but I loved it. So….when I got a chance to read her latest, I had to have it.

I love covers. Though this cover doesn’t do a lot for me, I can’t say the same for the short story inside. AND, if you want a few laughs, be sure and read her bio. 🙂

The Celestial Assignment

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

The Celestial Assignment by Theresa Braun is a very quick read at 28 pages. It’s hard to review a short story without giving anything away, but, here we go.

Will is assigned to baby girl, Celeste, for his angel training. He is not exactly the angel you may want watching over your child, but, hey, God is a forgiving god, right? Giving us opportunities to redeem ourselves?

I love characters like Will. He had no idea what the future had in store for him and I loved watching him learn, grow, and…

I didn’t see the end coming. I smiled at the twist.

ABOUT THERESA BRAUN

Theresa Braun

Hmmm. What’s this? Looks like Ms. Braun left her computer on and her Goodreads bio open.

This should be fun.

What can we say about Theresa? I mean other than the fact that she’s weirdly obsessed with smiley faces :-). Like, seriously obsessed >:-*. It’s kinda scary :-O.

I think she thinks she’s from Renaissance England or Venice or something. I never could figure out which one it was. (She’s really bad at doing accents.)

She likes romance novels and crime TV, which are pretty much the same thing when you think about it. Ha! Am I right?

She has a hell of a singing voice. Seriously. It’s, like, seventh circle of hell bad.

She likes editing. A lot. Just wait till she get’s aload a this.

Cats. Shoes. Chips and salsa. In that order.

Yeah, that last part didn’t make sense to me either.

Giveaway – Sons of Fire by Tracy Auerbach @TracyAuerbach @XpressoTours

.

Sons of Fire
Tracy Auerbach
Publication date: January 7th 2020
Genres: Urban Fantasy, Young Adult

When Keegan’s father, the Demon King of Fire, attempted to produce an heir, a surge of light energy interrupted the process. One tiny piece of the newly forming demon broke off. That piece is Keegan. For years, he has attempted to lay low, watching from the shadows while his monstrous brother Aidan, the true Prince of Fire, is groomed for the throne.

Keegan’s shaky status quo is shattered when one of his father’s power-plays goes horribly wrong. He is cast to Earth and forced to work with a suddenly powerless Aidan. The two brothers must cooperate to complete an impossible task and avoid being cast forever into the abyss. As if having to spend time with his beastly other half wasn’t bad enough, Keegan must adapt to living on Earth, wielding his new human vessel, and dealing with his demonic appetite without harming the human creatures for whom he has always cared.

As Keegan and Aidan work to save themselves, questions arise. What exactly was the King of Fire up to, that sparked their Master’s interest enough to cast them from the Demon Realm? Can Aidan be trusted in his new human form, complete with emotions, or is he the same unfeeling creature he’s always been? And why are so many demons suddenly invested in the outcome of the brothers’ trial? The only thing Keegan knows for certain is that whether he succeeds or fails at the task, the consequences for the Demon Realm and for Earth itself will be catastrophic.

EXCERPT:

The Demon Realm, Present Day

1

Adramelech, King of Fire, stood before all the souls he had gathered, admiring the fruits of his labor. Collecting and shepherding them to his realm had taken work, but it was nothing compared to all the time and effort he had expended to reach this moment: his moment of triumph. The pale energy orbs of the damned, thousands of them, floated above the parched brown floor, drifting aimlessly, bumping into each other or into the black-hot walls of stone around them. The stage was now set for him to finally seize control from his impotent ‘Master.’

“Come to me, Fire,” he called.

A moment passed before his offspring shimmered into being several paces away. The Prince cast a vacant stare upon Adramelech, awaiting orders. The young demon’s strong torso was bare, his dark hair hanging over the translucent skin of his face. Dragonfire swirled beneath the skin’s surface, lending the impression of movement to his form. His eyes were black with hunger while his handsome, human-like figure swelled with power.

The offspring was a paradox of mental weakness and physical fortitude that had taken two hundred years to create and shape. But now it had, at last, come to fruition and Adramelech knew that his efforts had been well spent. The being before him contained so much power that it only held its pretty visage through sheer force of will. And still it wanted more. Always hungry, always obedient, always his.

“It is time, my Fire,” crooned Adramelech. “Do you understand what you must do?”

The boy-shaped demon nodded.

“First, I will give unto you what remains of my power. When I leave, you must follow the instructions exactly as I have lain them out. Remember, above all else, that it is still my power. I will not become another Lucifer, who cast his strength into a sword and imprisoned himself in ice for all eternity. My sword will behave. If you fail, I shall be forced to resort to my back-up plan. And believe me that the alternate arrangement is something you would not want to experience.”

The Prince nodded, eyes still dull and hungry. Adramelech knew his Fire would not speak unless he himself requested it.

“Do you have any questions?”

The demon shook his head.

“Then let us begin.” Adramelech willed the power within every molecule of his own form to flow to the surface, watching his creation’s eyes glow in anticipation. Indeed, the only time his heir came to life was when a large feeding was expected. The boy-shaped demon opened its mouth as Adramelech began to speak. “I, Adramelech, Son of Lucifer, offer a portion of my power unto you.”

“I, Fire, Son of Adramelech…” the Prince began.

“You must include the ridiculous human title Paimon bestowed unto you,” Adramelech corrected. “It is your written name and therefore necessary for the ritual.”

“I, Aidan Fire, Son of Adramelech, accept the power and take it unto my form to hold, so that Adramelech, King of Fire, may wield both it and I as he sees fit.”

Adramelech focused his power into a beam of energy and shot it toward his creation. Even as the Prince’s power swelled and his eyes turned the golden hue of Dragonfire, he accepted the gift hungrily. Adramelech considered all that he had wrought and was pleased.

An appaloosa horse is the only eyewitness to a killing, a sack of Montana sapphires is missing, and only Heaven knows the whole truth.

In “The Man Who Fell from the Sky,” some themes of “Ghost” meet “The Horse Whisperer” in this full-length, paranormal whodunnit mystery that is packed with romantic suspense, danger, dark secrets and high spiritual stakes.

Cody Bliss, angel detective, is assigned by Heaven to the mortal body of J.R. Wilder, a paroled murderer, in order to solve his own previous untimely demise and take care of unfinished business with Mariah, who is unable to move on with her life until she knows what happened to her missing husband.

Against the backdrop of a western Montana ranch near Glacier National Park, and in the company of Mariah and her tight-knit family, Cody (inside the body of J.R. Wilder) must solve the murder mystery using forensic clues and the spiritual powers of an angel. He must also yield to J.R., whose body he is using, as J.R. falls in love with Cody’s widow.

This full-length novel’s compelling characters are all seeking truth and redemption. Only an angel detective can set things right, and the consequences for an entire family rest in his heavenly hands.

Angel detectives, a mix of the ghost and horse whisperer…what’s not to like? Sounds like a good one to me. How about you?

Monday Mini – Craven Street by E J Stevens @EJStevensAuthor

I have seen E J Stevens name bandied about and even follow her newsletter, so why I haven’t read or reviewed any of her work before surprised me. LOL So I set out to correct that and picked up a review copy of Craven Street, which was released 6.25.19.

Craven Street (Whitechapel Paranormal Society, #0.5, Ivy Granger Psychic Detective, #0.10)

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

The cover has an eerie vibe and I do I love the location, Whitechapel. It made me feel as if Jack The Ripper was looking over my shoulder as I walked the streets…or should I say ran, because there be monsters here.

I also love that the Whitechapel Paranormal Society has an all female unit.

We have plenty of action and sometimes our enemy will be our friend, as the bodies pile up. Gritty, dangerous action in this other worldly battle between good and evil.

Though there is not a cliffhanger, the story is far from over.

GOODREADS BLURB

In this spellbinding novella, E.J. Stevens weaves a tale of murder, necromancy, and demonic possession that brings together characters from her Whitechapel Paranormal Society Victorian horror series and award-winning Ivy Granger Psychic Detective urban fantasy series on the fog-shrouded cobblestones of 36 Craven Street.

The discovery of bricked up skeletal remains at 36 Craven Street point to something more diabolical than an illegal anatomy school. The tool marks on the bones, arcane sigils of great power, indicate more than mere butchery, more than enlightened experimentation. The signs, omens, and portents support the crown’s greatest fears. A great evil is being unleashed upon the gaslit streets of London, a blood-drenched shadow reaching skeletal fingers beyond the slums of Whitechapel.

We must stamp out this demonic plague for the sake of our Queen, our Country, and our immortal souls. – Cora Drummond, Whitechapel Paranormal Society

Collecting human souls is a thankless job, nearly as tedious as acting as solicitor to the fae. But when the demon Forneus enters an opium den searching for men eager to trade their souls for the ill-smelling weed, he stumbles on a plot so devious, so heinous, he’s jealous that he hadn’t thought of it himself.

There’s nothing like a maniacal plot to unleash Hell on earth to break the boredom of immortality. – Forneus, Grand Marquis of Hell
