GENRE: Middle Grade Fractured fairy tales

MY REVIEW

Aria is The Big Fat Mermaid.

Ahab spotted her and named her as the whale that bit off his leg. She escaped his clutches by singing a siren’s song. She followed the boats, because she loved the human’s food.

Her father, Poseidon, put his foot down…seaweed only!

She rebels and goes to the water witch for a pair of legs, where she is seen by the prince who promptly falls in love with her. She burps, farts and eats, eats, eats, so it just goes to show that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The humorous writing made me view this as an animated movie that played in my head as I sang along; hanging out with the mermaids, turtles and crustaceans, singing, dancing, and eating, eating, eating.

I feel there is a message in here and Dweezel and Pallie did a great job of showing we are all unique and lovable in our own way. What would the world be like if we were all the same?

My only problem was, I felt bad as I laughed at her, but it never seemed to bother Aria. She was comfortable in her own skin.

I received a copy of The Big Fat Mermaid by Dweezel and Pallie in return for an honest review.

BLURB

She’s nasty, she’s gross, and she’s anything but little. All Aria the mermaid princess wants is to stuff her face full of food, but what happens when her dad, the king, tries to stop her? The answer: laughs beyond belief! Watch as Aria deals with her mean dad, a chubby-chasing prince, a harpoon wielding sea captain, and, in a grand final battle, the monstrous water witch herself.

Aria will bite, belch, and fart her way into your heart in this second installment of the Funny Stories for Kids series, brought to you by the famed Dweezel and Pallie.

EXCERPT

Look at my stash, see all the treats?

See all the cupcakes and pickled pigs feet?

You can see I’m a mermaid

who wants to eat… everything!

I eat every second I’m waking

I’m so fat that I’m breaking the floor

Double chins?

I got twenty!

But so what?

I don’t care!

I want more!

I need to eat what the humans eat

I’d like to eat when the food is still dry

I want to eat some fresh…

Uggh… beef!

Down in the brine the food tastes so bad,

when all you’re allowed is some seaweed to live by,

None of that stuff that’s so salty and…

mmm mmm mmm… Sweet!

What do I care

if all the laws

say we have to stay hidden?

And what do I care

if eating of meat

is strictly forbidden?

I’m addicted to food

but it tastes so good

so I don’t give a single crum about rules;

want more yummies, dipped in honey,

no one to intrude.

Off by the ships

I get just get what drips

off of the sides, or they throw in barrels.

No primo stuff like

fresh dip and…

uggh… chips!

I want to munch,

I want to brunch,

I want to eat the thing they call lunch!

Sweets and the meats…

I need to eat

all of that food.

Giveaway & Excerpt: A Storm of Secrets by Shona Perrett

A Storm of Secrets

Welcome to my tour stop for A Storm of Secrets by Shona Perrett! This is a new adult psychological thriller. The tour runs December 1-11 with reviews, interviews, guest posts and excerpts. Check out the tour page for the full schedule.

A Storm of SecretsAbout the Book:

Special Agent Rios wakes up in an abandoned aeroplane. He finds himself on an unfamiliar island in the Bermuda Triangle, suffering from what appears to be amnesia. He must search for clues about his identity, as well as decipher the secrets of the island itself.

But will the truth be too terrifying to live with? Strangers hell-bent on murder, stranded young pilots, and signs of organized weapons trade. These things only touch the surface. What lurks in the skies above is far more sinister.
There is a strange energy high above the clouds, stewing deep within the Bermuda waters. And it grows restless. A storm is coming. A storm like no other, seeking to invade their minds. With the help of his newly acquainted team of special ops pilots, Rios must find a way to stop the storm before it destroys them…from the inside out.

.
EXCERPT

Timothy had just about taken his first mouthful, but then hesitated. He looked at Rios and Yale who were talking, smiling. Acting ordinary. But they weren’t ordinary, were they? They were operatives.

What if they had been instructed to eliminate the group tonight? What if they had been ordered to solve the problem of the three civilians that had survived unexpectedly? Rios and Yale would have to follow orders.

Timothy flinched and dropped his fork onto his plate. Rios glanced at him, then continued to talk with Tia. Timothy looked at Yale, who got up from her seat on the kitchen bench and walked into the bathroom. What was she doing? Getting into an opportune position to strike from behind? No, surely not.

She had kept the group alive these past few days. They had become friends, hadn’t they? Friends don’t assassinate other friends. Unless they’re government operatives, maybe.

“Rios” Timothy said, not knowing what to say next, but sensing the urgency to intervene on the potentially poisoned dinner Tia and Aiden were about to consume. “You mind testing my fish for me? I’m allergic to soy.” He shrugged. “Maybe it’s in the marinade.”

Rios paused for a while, flicking his eyes between Tia, Aiden and Timothy. “There’s no soy.”

“Better safe than sorry though, right? I’ll swell up like a balloon. It’s very unpleasant to behold, trust me, I’m doing you a favour.” Timothy held out his plate to Rios, opposite him at the dining table. “Be a pal, yeah?”

Rios stared at the plate, a slight frown on his face. “Alright.” He picked up his own fork and cut off a chunk.

“I didn’t know you were allergic to soy man” Aiden said.

Timothy nodded once, eyes staying on Rios. Yale was still in the bathroom. Tia leaned her head down against her palm absent-mindedly, her arm resting on the table.

“You’re good” Rios said with a side grin, chewing.

“See, no worries” Aiden said. “Now how ‘bout that whiskey I spotted in your purse Rios?”

Timothy and Rios held their stare a fraction longer, Rios pointedly swallowing the piece of fish. He smirked, which seemed in mockery of Timothy’s paranoia, then chucked a bottle of whiskey from his satchel without looking, into Aiden’s hands, who opened it and poured himself half a glass.

A flush came from the bathroom.

Timothy breathed out, realizing his mind had gotten away on him.

He had to trust them. Rios and Yale were the group’s best chance at getting off the island.

Giveaway: Sophie’s Quest by Sonia Anderson

On tour with Prism Book Tours.

Book Blitz for
Sophie’s Quest
By Sonja Anderson

Sophie’s Quest is currently only 99¢ for Kindle!

 Interview with Author Sonja Anderson

  1. What is your motivation behind Sophie’s Quest? Why did you want to write it?

The character of Sophie Topfeather popped into my head many years ago when I was teaching a multi-faith class at St. Mary’s International School in Tokyo, Japan. According to many stories, owls are supposed to be wise, and it felt like we could use a wise owl in our class to help me answer all the kids’ great questions about God. Then, about fifteen years ago, my five-year-old daughter got into heated discussion about God on the playground with two other students from different religious backgrounds, and my wise owl popped back into my head again. I wanted to write a story that would help her understand others better in our diverse community, and for her friends to also understand her.

  1. What do you hope readers take with them after they’ve read it?

I hope that first of all, they take away the feeling that they have made some special friends on the journey, and want to know what happens next! I also hope and pray that readers will have developed compassion for others who believe differently than they do, and an increased desire to know the true Sky Painter–Jesus, Immanuel, God with us.

  1. Do you have a favorite scene?

I love all the scenes with Sophie and Timley, but some of my favorite scenes are between the Great Wise Horned Owl and Timley’s very frightened mother. Their love for their missing children helps them forge a strong bond that is very special.

  1. What is something about you that is unique?

I write from home with a view of Puget Sound. While writing Sophie’s Quest, I would watch container ships go by and imagine Sophie and Timley on board.

Sophie’s Quest

Middle Grade Adventure
Paperbook & ebook, 2260 Pages
June 7th 2015 by Sunberry Books

Sophie Topfeather loves to collect people-things with which to decorate her life and home. When she finds a golden necklace, she is intrigued by its shape and shows it to her grandfather, the Great Wise Horned Owl of the Park. His reaction only stirs her interest even more; he calls it a holy symbol, and then a ‘t’ for ‘trouble’! All of which sets our young owl off on a Quest to learn its true meaning. Little does she know that a day-dreaming, over-protected, adventure-seeking Pirate – er, mouse – named Timley has leapt into the brim of her hat as Sophie flies off on her Quest! And suddenly, their adventure takes its own turn as they find themselves on board a ship bound for the Holy Land. Thorns and thistles! Has the trouble started already? Can Timley convince Sophie she should not—I repeat, NOT—eat him?

This is also the story of the mysterious Sky Painter, who seems to be with them—no, leading them—on their Quest. So, why is he always leading them straight into trouble? Was the Great Wise Horned Owl right all along? Come along on the Quest to find out! Cross oceans with Sophie and Timley to a land of mosques and synagogues, markets and Bedouin tents, and, like our unlikely friends, you may never be the same again!

Giveaway – Lies Ripped Open by Steve McHugh

NBTM_TourBanner_LiesRippedOpen

Welcome to my stop for Lied Ripped Open by Steve McHugh.

I love learning about characters and how authors came up with them, so let me introduce you to Steve McHugh. Welcome Steve.

Characters – sometimes my emphasis is on the story, but lately I have found the characters are speaking pretty loud. Where do you get your inspiration for the characters you write about?

Inspiration for characters can come from anywhere; a video game, another book, TV, real life. At some point I’ll see or hear something, and Ill know it’ll work as character, or a trait, or maybe just a single line or way of saying something. And from there that character will develop into something more.

Mostly my characters develop over time, over the course of thinking and writing the book. I find it easier to let them change and grow naturally, that way their behavior is more organic, more natural. Forcing something to happen because I as the writer want it to, doesn’t mean it’ll work for the characters in question, and balancing those things—what I want and what they want—isn’t always easy. Sometimes you have to forgo the easy thing to do the thing that works best, which in the long run works better for the book and characters.

That means sometimes I’ll be writing a book, and suddenly a new character will appear, someone I had no intention of using, but who fits within the narrative of the book, and they sort of force themselves into the story. It happens with every book, without question, and in my eyes it’s part of the fun of writing. I have to trust in myself not to make anyone do anything out of character, at least not without reason, and I can be hard work to ensure that one character doesn’t behave in a way that would go against their normal personality, but it usually doesn’t take me long to realize my error and go change things.

Character creation, and making those characters come to life off the page for the reader, is one of the harder, but more rewarding parts of being a writer. Yes, I have several dozen voices in my head (although usually only one or two at a time) all making sure I don’t write anything that goes against the order, but anything else would be dull.

Steve McHugh is the author of the popular Hellequin Chronicles. The fifth book, Lies Ripped Open, was out on 25th August 2015. He lives in Southampton on the south coast of England with his wife and three young daughters. When not writing or spending time with his kids, he enjoys watching movies, reading books and comics, and playing video games.

I really enjoyed learning more about you and what inspires you, Steve. Thanks so much for joining us today!

BLURB

Over a hundred years have passed since a group of violent killers went on the rampage, murdering innocent victims for fun. But even back then, sorcerer Nate Garrett, aka Hellequin, knew there was more to it than simple savage pleasure—souls were being stolen.

Nate’s discovery of the souls’ use, and of those supporting the group’s plan, made him question everything he believed.

Now the group Nate thought long dead is back. Violent, angry, and hell-bent on revenge, they have Hellequin firmly in their sights. And if he won’t come willingly, they’ll take those closest to him first.

The battle begins again.

EXCERPT

I walked over to the second agent, whose back was toward me as he stood a little further into the park, and placed my hand on his shoulder. “That’s enough,” I repeated, but he spun around and all of the breath left my body at once, followed immediately by pain as it exploded across my torso. I glanced down as a shimmering blade of ice was pulled free from my chest. It was covered in my blood. I dropped to my knees and watched as the magical weapon vanished from view. The pain forced me to abandon my night vision, and the darkness once again took control.

The overwhelming thought that bounced around my head was that neither of the SOA agents had been sorcerers. My attacker crouched beside me. “They interrupted me and my prey got away,” his accent was from East London, but sounded slightly different from many of those living in the city. As if he’d been away from here for a long time, and had not quite remembered how the accent was meant to sound.

I glanced up at him, still unable to breathe; the blade had punctured a lung. It wouldn’t kill me, but it would be a few hours until I was back to normal, and without my night vision I could have been staring into Merlin’s own face and I’d never have known.

The man got back to his feet and kicked me onto my back. “I should make sure you remember your time here, but I’m sure your comrades over there will be able to do that better than I could.”

ABOUT STEVE MCHUGH

AuthorPhoto_LiesRippedOpenSteve’s been writing from an early age, his first completed story was done in an English lesson. Unfortunately, after the teacher read it, he had to have a chat with the head of the year about the violent content and bad language. The follow up ‘One boy and his frog’ was less concerning to his teachers and got him an A.

It wasn’t for another decade that he would start work on a full-length novel that was publishable, the results of which was the action-packed Urban Fantasy, Crimes Against Magic.

Review: Sucking in San Francisco by Jessica McBrayer

Sucking in San Francisco by Jessica McBrayer is a bloody good read that you will want in your horror collection.

I couldn’t help but laugh at the title and ran right over to sign up to review this fun vampirc novel through Masquerade Book Tours R2R program.

I mean, check out that cover. How could I possible resist?

MY REVIEW

Sucking in San Francisco by Jessica McBrayer has a great title and cover combination. This paranormal romance is written with a light and comical touch, with characters that got me involved and kept me there.

I love the fun humorous, witty, snarky writing that makes sucking sound like it’s okay, just a necessity, whether it’s for blood or energy.

Lilith, a vampire, works for a suicide hotline. How funny is that? She is an obsessive compulsive under stress, a germaphobe, lysol and handi-wipes always in reach. She swabs the neck of her victim before she sinks her teeth into him. HA HA HA!

Sebastian, a fellow vamp who has been like a brother to her, all of a sudden has the hots for her. He is a vamp casanova. Can she trust him? Or is this just lust? After 76 years, Lilith is having some of the same feelings. How long can she ignore them? Lilith does acts like a teen, so is she a baby vamp?

Aidan is a djinnn that has formed an attachment to her. He met Lilith when he called into the suicide hotline she worked for. She’s awakened his curiosity, given him a reason, a disire to live.  Can a vampire and djinn be, you know together?

Hannah is another vampire friend. She is a hippie and dresses like a Goth hooker. I mention her, because she is a badass, unique individual and I love her. Will she have a book of her own. *crossing fingers and toes*

Someone else wants Sebastian and Lilith is in the way. Even Hannah is attracted to Sebastian. Is it vampire allure or just his hotness?

The mine’s bigger than yours going on between Sebastian and Aidan is comical, sweet and a triangle I didn’t mind…for a while. The testosterone challenge was fun, though it did drag on for a long time and Lilith comes across as somewhat of a bitch and a slut. I love them both and hate that she has to choose. But…I feel I do know who it will be.

I loved all the characters each playing their important and unique part to the story. Helena, Julian and Andrew deserve a mention. I love that Lilith works at a crisis center answering a suicide prevention hotline. At least that keeps her food supply going strong. LOL The writing is wonderful and the mystery is alive. We have heroes and villains, the vindictive, evil kind.

I received Sucking in San Francisco in return for an honest and unbiased review.

I see there are more books in the series and I was able to get the second one as an Amazon freebie, YAY. And it is about Hannah. I had a feeling she deserved a story of her own. I am looking forward to another fun and dangerous romp in San Francisco.

I had a really busy week and didn’t have time to make my usual Sunday post, so I would like to share a little of what I was up to:

ROAD TRIP

Every so often Mr Wonderful and I get a burr in our butt and feel the need to hit the road. This time, my mom and sister went with us to Biloxi, Mississippi and Nawlins, Louisiana.

Biloxi/New Orleans with Mom and Laura

We had a great time and are looking forward to the next road trip.

Class Heroes: Young Adult Thriller Books

Stephen Henning is the author of Class Heroes, a wonderful story about superheroes.

He has created these videos, mini movies, if you will, and I wanted to share them with you. What do you think? Is this something you would read?

From Stephen Henning

Well here’s a little treat for you. Slightly ahead of schedule I’ve published the fourth Class Heroes short film ‘The Hunt for Lolly Rosewood’. I’ve ambitiously entered the film into a short film festival and the deadline is Friday 11 September,
So here it is. Hope you enjoy it. Special thanks on this one to Parkour Generations (PKGen) for all their help in choreographing the chase scenes.
Teenager Lolly Rosewood has become one of the UK’s most-wanted terrorists, hunted by the security services, surviving on her wits and her super abilities. When she’s spotted in a London street, an MI6 agent takes it upon himself to bring her in…

Hit ‘n Run

by Lori Power

 BLURB

Determined to build a better life, and forget their past, a freak accident crashes Lorna Tymchuk and Mitch Morgan back into each other’s lives.

It’s more than a “Hit ’n Run” that needs to be taken care of at the police station. False identification, miscommunication and a past better left buried surface to plunge these recently reunited lovers into a deadly game of cat and mouse trying to figure out who the bad guys really are.

All threads pulled threaten the very fabric of their fragile relationship. Caught between desire suspicions, each must decide who to trust and how far to go to follow their instincts.

EXCERPT

The long, black hearse sat in the shade of the leafy willows, unnoticed in the quiet, upscale neighbourhood. Like a panther surveying its prey, watchful behind the tinted glass, undercover officer Mitchell Morgan scrutinized the surroundings, ever conscious of the contents in the back.

Mouth parched, complete with a tongue as dry as sand, Mitchell tilted the water bottle slowly and swallowed, enjoying the moist coolness as it trickled down his throat. Satisfied, he slumped farther in the leather seat, aware of the children in the driveway on the corner, the stooped, elderly man picking weeds in the yard nearby, the teen across the street who sat hunched over his DS, on the front concrete step, looking bored.

The holstered cell next to his leg vibrated an insistent stutter, shattering the serene atmosphere. Mitch spared the screen a brief glance.

Blocked.

Without air conditioning, beads of sweat coasted from his brow, under his shades and into his eye, stinging and obscuring his vision. He blinked several times to clear the fog and pressed the accept key.

Three quick, muted tones preceded a double click, to indicate a secure line. A small thrill travelled along his nervous system, leaving a wake of gooseflesh.

“Nine-one-three-Q-R-two-two-E-D-U.” Only after he gave his code would dispatch relay the encrypted message.

“Funeral procession to start,” replied a robotic voice. “All pallbearers to the church.”

A long high-pitched tone pierced his ear. He moved the phone away and severed the connection.

He held the phone level with the steering wheel. His thumb smeared across the face of the cell leaving a greased streak on the screen, while his heart slowed. Within an instant his mind refocused to what was to come next. His left hand moved to smooth his beard. Months of building a case and gathering evidence had come down to this moment.

He turned the engine over and banged the heel of his hand on the steering wheel. “Game on.”

ABOUT LORI POWER

AuthorPhoto_HitNRunTurning passion into words in print is a dream come true for Lori Power.

From Radio host (best job ever!), DJ, news reporter to newspaper journalist, like many author’s, Lori has been writing most of her life.

In writing, Lori has discovered a truism: everyone has a great story to tell. All you need to do is listen. Over the years, with all the people Lori has meet previously and daily, both professionally and personally, with an ear to the ground, readers can often find these ‘character’s’ fictionalized in Lori’s stories.

Lori’s first novel “Storms of Passion” was published by Wild Rose Press under their Champagne line, in 2014 and received a 5-star Author’s Favourite seal of approval in 2015.

Collaboration is important to improving one’s craft and as such, Lori is an active member of the Romance Writers of America, TransCanada Romance Writers, The Alberta Romance Writers Association and belongs to both a Critiquing group and a Beta Reading weekly group.

Lori looks forward to continuing to find the good story; hashing out a scene, having fun with a character and writing the story she would love to read.
