Genre: Paranormal / Contemporary Fantasy

Stuck on an island encircled by fire and hunted by shadows bent on trapping them there forever, Irene and Andras struggle to hold onto the last vestiges of their physical selves, without which they can never return to the land of the living. But it’s not just external forces they’ll have to fight as the pair grow to realize they have different goals. Irene still clings to the hope that she can somehow return to her old life—the one she had before she died—while Andras would be only too glad to embrace oblivion.

Meanwhile, Jonah desperately searches for a way to cross over to the other side, even if doing so means his death. His crossing over, however, is the one thing that could destroy Irene’s chances of returning home.

Too many obstacles, too many people to save, and the thing Irene most desperately wants—to return to her old life—seems farther away than ever. Only one thing is clear: moving on will require making a terrible sacrifice.

About the Author

Terri Bruce has been making up adventure stories for as long as she can remember and won her first writing award when she was twelve. Like Anne Shirley, she prefers to make people cry rather than laugh, but is happy if she can do either. Book Excerpt

Andras grunted, the sound filled with suspicion. Irene bent down to tie her shoelace, as much to avoid eye contact as anything. When she straightened up, something in the distance caught her eye, shimmering like a mirage. She squinted, not sure she was really seeing what she thought she saw.

“You know, now might be a good time for you to tell me what it was like to live in a castle,” she said.

Andras shook his head, sadly, as if Irene had disappointed him. “You cling too much to the past. Forget the trappings of life. Free your mind from these longings, and so, free your soul. Only then will we be able to escape these shackles and enter Heaven to rest at the side of God.”

Why did he always have to argue about everything? “For God’s sake,” she said, exasperated, “just answer the question!”

“Wherefore?”

Irene pointed to the hulking structure in the distance. “Because,” she said as Andras whirled around to see what she was pointing at, “correct me if I’m wrong, but that looks like a castle.”

“Wow!” Irene said, her eyes roving over the dark, crenellated structure hulking in the far distance. It gleamed dully, the color of burnt blood in a fading afternoon sun. “What the hell do you think that is?”

Andras grunted. “As you said—Hell.”

Irene frowned at him, but her lips quirked in amusement. “Why do you have to be so negative? It could just as easily be Heaven. God is supposed to live in a palace, right—the whole ‘my father’s house has many rooms’ thing? A castle is just a type of palace.”

Andras gave her a dry look. “Does that look like Heaven?”

Irene was on the verge of agreeing that the castle did not in any way look how she imagined Heaven when it shimmered, as if the fading sunlight had been redirected by mirrors. Light rippled across the castle’s surface and the dull, dark, burnt-blood color transformed into gleaming, bright, silver-white. Crisp white pennants flapped from the corners as if whipped by wind. Irene thought she could hear them snapping crisply.

Irene looked at Andras, and he looked at her. His expression made it clear that he had seen the same transformation she had. It was as if the building was trying to trick them into coming closer.

Synopsis: Ever wondered if Ransom Scott would get his happily ever after? Find out February 16th!

It started with a drink.

It turned into a promise.

Ransom Scott lost his heart the day the woman he loved chose another man. Or so he thought. Estranged from his brother, distancing himself from the world, he’s been drowning his sorrows in cheap booze and women…determined to forget.

His world is falling apart, until a beautiful woman decides to take a chance on him.

Dani Deviche is as bewitching as she is innocent. Full of youth and vitality, she captivates him. Challenges him. She’s everything Ransom never thought to look for in the opposite sex, and he can’t get enough.

When a promise of friendship turns into something more, can Ransom fulfill his end of the bargain, or will a secret from Dani’s past destroy his last chance at happiness?

**Author’s Note** This book was written as a compliment to the Forbidden Trilogy. However, it can be read as a standalone.

FORBIDDEN VALENTINE

EXCERPT

Dani couldn’t catch her breath. Ransom was insatiable, devouring her mouth like a man starved. She curled her arms around his neck, throwing herself into his dark kiss, exhilarated by his need for her, and hers for him.

Of the few boyfriends she’d had, none had affected her like this man—a near stranger. Someone who was, as far as she could tell, damaged. And not an average, run-of-the-mill kind of damage that nearly everyone in the world experienced.

This was soul-deep. His heart hadn’t just broken. It’d been shattered. And it was obvious to her that he was desperately searching for something to numb the pain. Help him forget. He’d chosen booze, and because of her own past demons, she hated it. Which was why, when he’d confessed his affliction, she’d drawn a line, putting an end to his self-abuse.

Her need to help, to fix, was in full-effect. Her ex always said it was her worst quality. Told her on numerous occasions that she was a fool for caring so much. That it would be her downfall.

Maybe she was and maybe it would be, but at least she would know that, in whatever small way, she’d helped.

And even if Ransom didn’t know it yet, he needed her.

But maybe not in the capacity he was currently aiming for.

As much as Dani loved the feel of his mouth on hers, his tongue dipping and diving into every unchecked corner, stoking a fire inside that threatened to blaze out of control, she knew if she allowed this to continue, she’d be taking advantage.

“Ransom.” With regret, she broke the sensational kiss, determined to end this before it went too far, but Ransom only detoured, licking and nibbling a path down the side of her neck that made her shiver.

“You taste so good,” he murmured against her heated skin. “So sweet. And you smell like heaven.”

Obsession, actually. She’d picked up a bottle on clearance following the holidays…What the hell was she going on about? She needed to put an end to this madness before it got out of control. And with the way her body was responding to his every touch and caress, that moment was fast approaching.

Tunneling her fingers through his hair, Dani formed a tight grip, intending to pull him away, only to hold him closer as his warm, wet mouth found the top of her breast. The way he lavished her body with attention, feasting on every inch of her flesh with an almost feral passion, was addictive. Dani had never had a man react to her that way. It was as if he couldn’t get enough. His hands gripped her hard, one around her hip, the other her right butt cheek. His mouth skated across her cleavage, worshiping her as he forged a path toward her hardened nipples. And his body—hard in all the right places—pinned her in place, demanding fealty that she was tempted to give.

Her back hit a wall, rattling a painting, and his knee wedged between her thighs. Heat seared her, clenching her core, and Dani moaned. As his hand left the curve of her ass and slipped around her thigh, her head began to lighten, her thoughts growing foggy.

The only noise between them was that of heavy breathing and the soft lapping of his tongue. When she felt his fingers pass over the top of her thigh and sweep up the center, painting a vivid picture of what he planned to do to her, she clenched her eyes shut and hated herself for what she was about to do.

After having just survived near annihilation, eighteen-year-old Julia and her vampire friends have reveled in the afterglow, and are now bored. Thankful their enemy is sleeping off the defeat quietly in Julia’s vaults for all eternity, they need a new challenge.

Not taking the threat seriously, the night loving crew turns the quest into a challenge: First person to solve the mystery, gets to be their new Justice League’s leader. They soon learn it’s not a joke, and once they head to New Orleans, they find others who’d love nothing more than to stand in their way. The threat is real, and unless they figure out what offering the riddle is referring to, all hell will be let loose, literally, rendering them powerless.

Will Julia be able to give up what’s required: a true sacrifice?

Let the hunt begin.

EXCERPT:

Supernatural Chronicles: The Vampires, by Brenda Pandos, is the third in the collection and it features characters from Brenda’s popular Talisman Series.

Mimi moved closer, tearing at her neck with her nails. Blood came to the surface, teasing me. Nicholas moved closer, but I raised my hand for him to stay back.

“I told you,” she whispered. “Now it’s your turn.”

I licked my canines as they lengthened on their own. “But what’s the thing that brings life and death?”

“It has to be your venom,” she said, but the pungent scent of a lie filtered into the air.

Her chest rose and lowered with her quick breaths, her heart fluttering in a staccato beat. Any other time, the blood might have overpowered me. But her blood was like settling for fast food when a gourmet feast was coming, and I didn’t want to spoil my appetite.

“Where is she?” I asked.

“I don’t know. Probably where evil hides in plain sight.” She lifted her chin. Yet another lie. Did she know where The Noir was? “I’m ready, Julia.”

She closed her dark eyes and pulled aside her long dark locks. On her neck was a necklace made from a black velvet ribbon. She’d thought she’d won—that her lies would satisfy me.

“I’m sorry, Mimi, but I need all my power when I take this relic to her.”

“What?” Her eyes opened, flashing hate. She scratched her nails down my cheek. “You are such a liar!”

I stayed her hand and squeezed. “You’re the one not telling the truth.”

About Brenda Pandos:

BrendaMommy warrior, comma-kazi, wife, computer whisperer, Pinterest addict, chocolate enthusiast, vampire and zombie slayer, merman magnet, and lover of all things pure and right. Well… maybe after a cup of coffee or two.

Author Brenda Pandos lives in California and is surrounded by the loves of her life—her husband, her incredible boys, a grumpy cat, eight chickens and her characters. Before becoming a full-time author, she worked as an IT administrator. After her son’s ASD diagnosis, everything changed. Being pregnant and embarking on a 35 hour a week in-home therapy schedule was grueling to say the least. She craved a meaningful escape.

Never having aspired to write before, she wrote her own vampire tale for kicks. Four months later, The Emerald Talisman was born. Unsure who’d want to buy her novel, she entered her fledgling book in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award and placed as a Quarter-finalist. That gave her the courage to go Indie and from there, she traversed into a life she’d never imagined and loves to this day. And since a small group of fans grew into a larger group of fans, all cheering her onto books two, three, four, five… and so on, she hasn’t looked back.

I love football and have loved watching the playoff games. The Senior Bowl is right next door, in Mobile, Alabama, and I was able to catch a glimpse of the players during practice. I even got my picture taken with A J McCarron, an Alabama quarterback who has made it to the NFL. He plays for the Cincinnati Bengals and is doing a right fine job.

Free Book & Giveaway – The Sugarspear Chronicles @NicoleArlyn

MBB_TheSugarspearChronicles copyLet’s venture into the magical world of The Sugarspear Chronicles by Nicole Arlyn.

I love the cool cover. What do you think?

MediaKit_BookCover_TheSugarspearChroniclesAmazon

GENRE: Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The Sugarspear Chronicles, the incredible twenty-six-novella saga that started with a little girl and her willow tree, is finally available in one complete collection.
The Sugarspear Chronicles: The Complete Collection is the story of young Sadie Sugarspear, a girl who endures intolerable abuse by reading about a fantasy world filled with incredible sights and outlandish people—a place she’s only ever encountered through her real father’s storybook.
One day, when the cruelty becomes too much to bear, Sadie runs away and hides inside her beloved willow tree. To her surprise, the tree opens, sending Sadie down into the abyss, into a land she’s only ever read about—where she must being a long, terrifying, and heartbreaking journey home.
Readers can now enjoy the entirety of author Nicole Arlyn’s dark fantasy saga in one complete book. This complete collection also includes a note from the author detailing the inspiration and events that led to The Sugarspear Chronicles.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt One:

The wind was ripping through the dandelion fields. The fence that stood alone shook but the blue flowers hanging off it stayed still. A pale girl walked on the dirt road through the fog and mud puddles towards the fence, her long brown hair slapping against her face, covering her green eyes that seemed blue when she turned them to the sky. She pushed her thin body through the wind, the black Rolling Stones t-shirt she wore as a dress blowing into her stomach. When she stood in front of the fence, the flowers finally swayed. Sprinkles of dew dying. Then she pulled them off, the crushed flowers in her hands, falling to earth. The wind never took them.

She sat on top of the fence watching the sky for rain. Instead she saw the faces that the clouds made morphing from evil to angel in one blink of her eyes. She ran her hands along the old brown wood, digging her fingertips hard in, crusted blood under her fingernails. She kicked her legs against the fence half wanting to knock it over and half wanting to fall with it, but it wouldn’t fall. She rubbed her thighs with the splinters until they burned and then made a fist with her right hand and bit down on it. She bit hard enough to stop her own tears. Only cry when the rain comes, she thought. That way the rain would wash away her tears and no one would know. She saw a caterpillar sitting beside her and picked it up.

“No one knows youʼre here but me,” she whispered. She laid the caterpillar where she found it. She opened her hands and kept waiting to catch the rain. She waited as the sky twisted around her, sealing her in a mist she wished only the sky could see through.

MY TEASE

“The spirits are angry and they are making themselves known. It’s not theoretical. It’s real. The Northwoods are filled with bad omens Either they”re displeased with us or something else is out of balance, but regardless, we Anishinaabe must address it. It’s time to put your textbooks away and wade in.”

GOODREADS BLURB:  Some borders should never be crossed. From the author of The Beast of Barcroft comes a waking nightmare of a horror novel that’s sure to thrill readers of Stephen King and Bentley Little.

Ex–Delta Force Davis Holland, now an agent for the Customs and Border Protection, has seen it all. But nothing in his experience has prepared him for what he and the local sheriff find one freezing night in the Minnesota woods.

Investigating reports of an illegal border crossing, the two men stumble across a blood-drenched scene of mass murder, barely escaping with their lives . . . and a single clue to the mayhem: a small wooden chest placed at the heart of the massacre. Something deadly has entered Holland’s territory, crossing the border from nightmare into reality.

When news of the atrocity reaches wealthy cryptozoologist Richard Severance, he sends a three-person team north to investigate. Not long ago, the members of that team—Ben McKelvie, Lindsay Clark, and Alex Standingcloud—were nearly killed by a vengeful shapeshifter. Now they are walking wounded, haunted by gruesome memories that make normal life impossible. But there is nothing normal about the horror that awaits in the Northwoods.

Giveaway & Review – White Light by Anna Simpson

Anna Simpson’s wonderful cover for White Light has so much going on, I have to tear my eyes away to get to the story.

At first glance it’s all nice and cozy, but it doesn’t stay that way.

MY REVIEW

White Light by Anna Simpson is a fun cozy with unique and quirky characters that kept me laughing at their antics as the mystery grows.

In the small town of Ravenglass Lake, Mrs Perkins and Emma live alone and look out for each other. They make a great pair.

The scene in the beginning of the book, when Emma suspects wrong doing and finds Mrs Perkins tied up makes me think of a Castle episode. For those of you who have never seen it, Castle is a TV show that features murder mysteries. I can picture this feisty lady bound hand and foot and it makes me smile and want to smack her up side the head at the same time. To find out why you will need to read White Light for yourself.

I love writing that can pull emotions from me and White Light does that.

Emma had spent lots of time in mental hospitals thinking she was insane. Did she have mutiple personality disorder or is there a supernatural  reason? She had always been alone, no friends. She was inexperienced when it came to socializing and men. She’s feisty, curious and a friend you want to have your back.

Emma writes about murder mysteries, so it’s no surprise that she becomes involved in one. This was the answer to her prayers. A mission, a reason to be, something to strive for. I love the way she and Mrs Perkins bob and weave their way through the mayhem.

Murder…attempted murder…money…

The mysteries grow larger and more frequent. We have plenty of suspects, colorful characters and the beginnings of a romance.

The writing kept me caught between the serious and the comical and I enjoyed being there. Anna Simpson’s ability to bring the words to life through her descriptive writing could make me feel as if I was there, sharing some of Emma’s experiences, feeling what she felt. I had my thoughts of who did what, but Anna did not let me know the answers too soon. Great job keeping me waffling back and forth.

There were a couple of places where I didn’t like Emma’s reactions to events and it didn’t read right for me. I received an ARC and the story may change before its release, so don’t hold me to this. Anna Simpson is an author I will keep my eye on.

I received an ARC of White Light by Anna Simpson in return for an honest review.

SYNOPSIS

Emma never dreamed of being a super-sleuth. In her mind, she’s more Scooby Doo than Nancy Drew and when her nosy neighbor, Mrs. Perkins, drags her to an anniversary party to solve a mystery, she rolls her eyes, buys a box of chocolates and hops in the car.

What’s a party without an attack on its host—or more accurately on the host’s grandson, sparking an allergic reaction and moving the party to the hospital waiting room. Suddenly, everyone is a suspect. Emma and Mrs. Perkins, along with Great Aunt Alice (a spirit with boundary issues who keeps stepping into Emma’s body like a new dress and playing matchmaker), dive into an investigation that almost gets Emma killed along with the man they are trying to protect. With so many reasons to kill him and so much to be gained if he died, Emma and Mrs. Perkins must unravel the tenuous ties that point to every member of his family as potential killers.

Even if it means going back to the psych ward, Emma will protect her friend and this innocent man. What good is freedom if it’s haunted with guilt?

Enjoy this peek inside!

To stay free, I perform a ritual every morning. It begins with stepping outside, where dawn streams through the leafy branches of my maple tree, landing, shifting, and dancing on the flowerbeds at my bare feet. A steaming cup of coffee warms my hands. The fragrant air fills my lungs. I sip, leaving the liquid on my tongue to capture a moment of rich goodness.

My name is Emma, and I need to stay grounded and calm. It’s important for my health, so I walk along the fence and let the cool blades of grass tickle my toes and dewdrops cling to my skin. For fun, I kick a ball of dandelion fluff. Little parachutes take flight catching the same breeze moving the leaves above my head. The seeds float up, and up, over the fence to land on Mrs. Perkins’ perfectly tended lawn. Not a dandelion or mat of moss to be seen.

In a half acre of green sits one flowerbed, brimming with Lily of the Valley. I remember the first time I saw them over fifteen years ago. The delicate white bells could only be fairy hats. Today, the round base of cemented river stone is still full of waxy green spear tips. I don’t see fairy hats anymore. No, now I enjoy the effects of nature—its simple perfection.

Mrs. Perkins does it best. In fact, everything around Mrs. Perkins is perfectly cared for—her home, her yard, her car—all perfect.

But not today. A dark line sits between the jamb and the edge of the door.
A few inches of shadow drives my calm away and prickles the long blonde hairs at the nape of my neck. Butterflies in my stomach tell, no scratch that, demand I find my phone and go next door.

Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not a snoop.

Mrs. Perkins, a wiry old bird, did everything herself. I’m not sure if it is because she’s the independent sort or if she has no one else to help her. Either way, when she suggested we watch out for one another, I agreed.

I’m also alone. It doesn’t bother me unless I catch the flu or something. Then I wonder if I will die and no one will notice. It’s a thought, or fear, I can’t shake. Mrs. Perkins’ house has my full attention, and within it sits the same worry. I’ll check on her because she would do the same for me.

I crash into my kitchen, slopping my coffee onto the counter as I slam the mug down. My phone could be anywhere. My gaze travels from the pine tabletop to the gray marble counter. It’s not here. I push through the swinging door to the living area, run my fingertips between the couch and chair cushions, scan the smoked-glass coffee table through my veil of long blonde hair, and sneak a peek under my overturned book on the throw rug. Desperate, I check around the bowl by the door where I toss my keys as I pass the spiral staircase to the loft. Still nothing.

Down the short hallway, I rush to my bedroom. I tug the midnight blue duvet off the bed and shake it. My pulse speeds up as something thuds on to the carpet. I pick up my smartphone and check the battery. Half power.

Excellent. I dash through my front door, across the lawn and unlatch Mrs. Perkins’ white picket gate. Her shiny yellow front door looks as solid as stone. I follow her path to the back wondering if danger lurks.

I gasp as I near the door. It’s like living a moment in a crime drama. I mimic what I have watched on television and bring up my phone to take a picture. Inching forward, heart pounding, I wonder if poor Mrs. Perkins is sprawled out on the bathroom floor, from a stroke, heart attack, or a butcher knife.

Don’t worry, Mrs. Perkins. I’m coming.

I pull my cotton sleeve over my hand and push the door wider. Her kitchen looks untouched as if it’s sterilized or newly installed. Tiles cool my bare feet with each step. Fear scratches at my nerves, “Mrs. Perkins? It’s Emma from next door. Are you okay?”

Silence.

I raise the phone to call for help.

A small sound carries from deeper in the house. I should stop, leave, and make the call.

Following the sound might be dangerous or, worse, plain stupid. And I’m scared. So scared, my breathing is all I hear over the pounding of my heart.
I’d look stupid if I’m wrong. Ravenglass Lake is so small-townsville, and Benny the bully is like no cop I’ve ever met. He would be no help. Worst of all, they’d call me crazy for sure. I slip the phone back into my denim pocket, quietly open her knife drawer, and pull out a meat cleaver. Armed, I creep forward.

Thank goodness Mrs. Perkins likes an open airy room. Evil housebreakers have nowhere to hide in the dining room.

A small thump like a cat landing on carpet makes me jump. But Mrs. Perkins doesn’t have a cat…or carpet—only allergies.

I tighten my grip on the cleaver as I stick my head into the living room. All is quiet and undisturbed. I enter the corridor to the front door. To my right are stairs to the upper floor. Farther ahead is a hall closet and nook where she keeps a desk and a small bookcase. Nothing seems touched.

I glance up at the glittery ceiling, swallow, and pull my phone from my pocket. The sensible thing is to dial 911. I sidestep for the front door, but in my mind’s eye Mrs. Perkins, wiry but frail, shakes her head. Her arm outstretched urging me not to leave.

Thump, I freeze. The noise is right beside me coming from the hall closet.
Without thinking, I open the door and find Mrs. Perkins tied up with duct tape across her lips. Her green eyes, round and unblinking, grow wide, and her usual perfect curls are mussed. I drop the cleaver. It clatters on the floor, and I pull the tape free.

About Author Anna Simpson

Anna Simpson lives near the Canadian-US border with her family. Even though she’s lived in several places in British Columbia, her free spirit wasn’t able to settle down until she moved back to her hometown.

She is easy to find though, if you know the magic word — emaginette. Do an internet search using it and you’ll see what I mean. :-)

Saturday Shorts – Midnight Burning by Karissa Laurel (@KarissaLaurel )

Karissa Laurel’s cover for the novel, Midnight Burning, is fantastic and I was so happy when I won a signed paperback copy.

A cover can make the difference between picking up a book or passing it over for another.

I am a “cover girl” and proud of it!

MY REVIEW

Midnight Burning is Book I of Solina Mundy’s paranormal/fantasy journey into the death of her brother, Mani.

She travels from a small town in North Carolina to Alaska and back again, seeking answers.

I love her new friend, Skylar, and think she will become a big part of Solina’s life. She’s an ex-Marine and backs down from no one.

The characters have distinct personalities and they shine through in the dialogue.

The dialogue is witty and snarky and I love it.

I love covers, especially when they foreshadow the upcoming story and this is a beauty. The eyes draw me in, looking for…

Midnight Burning by Karissa Laurel was not what I was expecting. The paranormal and myths and legends collide. It is sometimes hard to tell if their talents are a gift or a curse.

The story is predictable and there is a triangle. I would recommend the book and I am looking forward to more of Solina’s story in Book II.
