Another Winner for Nick Clausen – The Girl Who Wasn’t There @NickClausen9

.

I first found Nick Clausen with a freebie…I believe…and it was all gravy after that. I ‘open’ each and every book with anticipation.

I have been reading his Dead Meat apocalyptic series and lovin’ it.

He has some of the greatest covers.

And…I see a look of determination on Rebecca’s face.

MY REVIEW

Andy and Rebecca had been told to stick together, but when he went into the library and Rebecca refused, the worst happened. He came out and she was gone.

I know many of us have had that annoying sibling…the one that keeps hanging on, following us around, and just down right making a pest of themselves. The funny thing…I was the annoying pest. I latched onto my older sister like a leech. LOL

In books, nothing ever happens by accident – there is always deeper meaning.

This quote definitely applies here.

Andy goes out every night…looking for Rebecca…looking for the elusive yellow van no one believes was there.

Told from multiple points of view and that always works for me. I love to get the view from each characters perspective, their thoughts and feelings.

WOW! This took a wild turn making me rapidly ‘flipping the pages’ to see what the outcome will be…and another wonderful twist that has me hopeful for a good outcome.

It turned out that the writing had a much more powerful pull on me.

Nick Clausen

I decided early on that I would be an author when I grew up. In fact, the decision came to me already when I read my first book, Snevampyren by Dennis Jürgensen. My first “real” stories I wrote at 14-15 years of age. They were rejected by the publisher, but still got praise. There were some years when I was busy with being a teenager and trying to get an education before I suddenly remembered that I should be an author.

That day I made a promise to write 1,000 words a day until I got a book published. I sat down and started writing. I continued to write every single day for a year and a half. I sent the finished manuscripts to different publishers, and the rejections piled up. Twelve of them by the end. But each time I could feel it was a little bit better. The criticism became more positive. The thirteenth story was called Tidevandet, and it was adopted by the publisher and came out a year later.

I have always enjoyed writing, although in the beginning I put a lot of pressure on myself. My approach to the process has become much more free over the years. For example, I no longer plan my stories. That way, I feel that I’m experiencing the story while writing it and the characters feel like real people. I do not know where the ideas come from, but I’ve never had trouble finding them.

Giveaway – Dreams of Mariposa by L T Getty @GoddessFish

.

Welcome to my tour stop for Dreams of Mariposa by L T Getty. I hope you enjoy the post and don’t forget to enter the giveaway below.

I am a sucker for a great cover and L T Getty has chosen a good one. I am so happy to share her thoughts with you today. What do you think?

Cover Etiquette

I have a pretty cover.

…oh, you wanted something of substance, did you?

I don’t have anything good to show you, but I was known more in High School for being an artist than a writer. Granted, I didn’t share my writing outside of the designated class, whereas I had conte and paintings occasionally in the hallways.

Now that I have the space I’m getting back into oil painting now, and now I’m a giant cover snob. Aren’t we all? My first reaction to seeing the cove: Well, that’s pretty, and it’ll be an easy sell for a thumbnail. The red stands out against the blue, so it’s striking.

The general feedback I’ve gotten from others is that the cover doesn’t scream ‘steampunk horror’ so much as paranormal romance. I disagree; one of my coworkers reads a ton of paranormal romance and there’s no rock hard abs to be found.

There’s some subtle details. The Studded bodice. The soft wrapping. The red lipstick isn’t to showcase Marie’s lovely lips.

Kinda contrasts to my Pinterest Book Board and What I suggested:

I could have definitely done worse in the cover department. It’s subtle, and while I’m the first one to put a plague doctor mask and disturbing imagery front and center, I’m just going to have to be really honest with y’all: it’s a steampunk horror novel. I don’t doubt that there’ll be some interest from readers from paranormal romance, but this is more about what happens when the heroine loses the love of her life and her afterlife ebbs ever forward without him, and her refusing to let go, unable to die because she’s maxed out her vamp stats.

If you are in the mood for a straight up paranormal romance, my publisher does have several titles. I’ll recommend Celia Breslin’s Haven.

So if anyone wants me to wax dramatic about the cover, I won’t. There have been many other, big name authors who got the “What were they thinking?!” covers. I can work with this.

Thanks so much for sharing with us today.

BLURB

Every decade, Marie must leave her home and everything she loves to start anew. She can’t risk the locals learning the truth of her immortality, much less her vampiric need of feeding off fear. Fortunately for Marie, fear comes easily and she spends her endless days mourning the loss of her beloved.

When she is summoned to the leaders of the masquerade, she is persuaded to assist them in uncovering a mystery of powers possibly more ancient then their own order.

As a rare daywalker of exquisite beauty, there is no society Marie cannot infiltrate. Having spent the last few centuries growing into her abilities, she expects to learn of the old powers, and return to her lonely eternity of mourning.

She doesn’t expect to fall in love.

EXCERPT

“Where is this fool taking us?” one of Raoul’s men asked.

I realized then that they hadn’t been paying attention.

“Driver!” He reached his arm outside the open window to rap and get his attention, but I could smell the hiss of venom and knew it was intentional.

The horses ran quicker, and I could hear more coming up. They sought to isolate us and do their deed in the woods. Interesting choice, as there was no need to restrain ourselves without potential witnesses.

One of Raoul’s guards kicked open the door. He glided out. His gift included some manipulation of his form, and like a shadow he leapt onto the path, while his fellow went to climb up on the stagecoach.

Raoul glanced at me. “You’ll be safest in here.”

“Do not leave your men, guardian mine.”

His gaze darted from mine as I recognized the smell of flesh turning to ash, and light pierced the chest of the fellow on the roof of the coach. He exploded into dust before he could scream. The stench of sulphur was undeniable, even without our honed senses. The other fellow met a similar end a moment later.

Unfazed by the strange tool on a chain, Raoul unsheathed a rapier from his cane and struck the driver in the leg. The man was young. He met a knife at the rapier for the second strike, but the riders coming up were too late. Raoul knocked aside the gun and slashed the driver’s face before he pierced his heart. I bounced along uncomfortably as the driver was pushed forward and went under the back left wheel.

The horses squealed and ran faster. Raoul reached for the reins, but a rider came up from beside the carriage, then put her pistol in through the open window at me. I grabbed the weapon with such force I nearly knocked her off her horse and into the carriage’s paneling.

He Had a Vision – Shepherd’s Warning by Cailyn Lloyd @cailynrox

Last year I took in numerous books from new to me authors. None were disappointing, though some were better than others. Shepherd’s Warning by Cailyn Lloyd was a delightful surprise.

MY REVIEW

A house in the woods. The man. The woman. A hidden entity.

Who doesn’t love a good haunted house story?

Lucas and his brother, Nate, had inherited the MacKenzie mansion in the small town of Lost Arrow. It had sat deserted for years and they were there to make it their home. HGTV would be along for the ride, documenting the transformation.

They had no knowledge of it’s reputation, the accidents, the things that go bump in the night.

Tom Wolfe had sworn to protect the house, while he waits for the owner, his love, Elizabeth, to return. He wonders why, now, they are people here. Is it at her whim? He likes that they are fixing it up, but once they are done, he wants them gone.

A premonition brought Kenric Shepherd to Wisconsin. His vision warns of danger, but he must wait for more to be revealed.

As soon as the chainsaw did it’s thing, I would have been long gone.

Laura had been treated for epilepsy and was bullied and teased growing up. She learned to enjoy her own company. I guess now she’ll learn it was so much more than epilepsy.

GOODREADS BLURB

For years the abandoned MacKenzie mansion remained hidden in rural Wisconsin. Rumors and stories of apparitions, odd noises, accidents, and strange deaths in or near the property were enough to convince the townsfolk it was haunted and they stayed away.

Lucas MacKenzie and his brother Nate know nothing of this when they inherit the property and decide to bring their families to Wisconsin for a major renovation project with HGTV stardom in mind. As they tear out old fixtures and open shuttered windows, the house begins to reveal secrets of a terrible past and it soon becomes clear the MacKenzies are in grave danger. In the end, only one person can save them.

The Infection Is Spreading – Day 3 by Nick Clausen @NickClausen9

.

Another wildly entertaining day in the Dead Meat series by Nick Clausen.

Dead Meat: Day 3 by [Clausen, Nick]

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

“Perhaps it’s only just begun.”

“Perhaps I’m one of the first to meet the undead?”

William is right. The zombie apocalypse is in the early stages. You won’t find it on social media. I love this tidbit.

Dan had woke up to a normal day, until…It was too late to stop it. A moments hesitation ended the possibility. Now, it’s a matter of who will survive.

William…oh man.

Millie…were any of her friends left alive?

Holger…mentally impaired, or is he? After all his paranoia and prepping, the time is at hand to make use of it.

Bad things happen to good people. Sometimes helping comes with a mortal, lethal cost.

I can hardly wait to find out what happens next and who will survive to tell the story.

Day 3 of the zombie apocalypse

The story picks up from Day 2. We meet William who works at the hospital. His workday starts out like any other—until he finds two zombies locked in a utility room in the basement. From there, things quickly escalate.

By Day 3, the infection is picking up speed, the zombies are spreading rapidly, and very soon everything could spiral out of control. Is it too late to save the world?

Zombies – Day 2: Dead Meat by Nick Clausen @NickClausen9

.

We are back with Nick Clausen and Dead Meat: Day 2. Dan is my favorite character, though Nick didn’t plan for him to play such a big part. Sometimes the characters speak and will not be denied.

There are two covers. Both are great, but I love the first one below. There is something about eyes that speak to me…silently. Look deeply. What do you see? Which do you like best?

MY REVIEW

Zombies. A missing girl, Jennie Nygaard. A bloody bite.

Selena, a young girl with big courage.

Allen, a cop who saw the truth.

Dan, my favorite character and brother of Jennie, knows what’s happening.

Nick Clausen gives us lots of gruesome violence and tons of action.

There’s a moment in time when in could have been stopped…but what’s the fun in that?

The saying about courage overcoming fear is pertinent to Dan. Does the world rest on his shoulders and his refusal to quit?

Nick Clausen does not hesitate to kill off his characters, regardless of how good they are, so be careful who you choose as your favorite.

Attack of the Mosquitos – Infested by Carol Gore #CarolGore

.

I love a good monster story and we all know about those pesky mosquitoes and the diseases they carry, but…what if…

Infested (Rewind or Die Book 2) by [Gore, Carol]

Amazon

MY REVIEW

OUCH! It starts out with a bug bite. And, it’s all downhill from there.

Casey is the environmentalist type, so it is no surprise finding her working for the Green Swamp Zip Line Adventure and Camp. It allows her to keep a close eye on the Swamp.

Doctor Phillip Edwards was trying to control the mosquito population by sterilizing them, then releasing them to compete for the females, hopefully limiting reproduction.

Cody is a cop, her brother, AND a major dick!

A hurricane. A chemical plant. Flooding in the Swamp. Mosquitoes. Horseflies. All of monstrous proportions. All viscous and hungry. What could possibly go wrong? LOL

Is that buzzing I hear? Did something just poke me? Is that a creepy crawlie making itself known? Shivers run up and down my spine as I read.

A swamp is already a dangerous, creepy place and Green Swamp only becomes more so as the days pass. And, we do have a surprise or two in store for you, so don’t be complacent. There is more than meets the eye going on.

Want to go on an adventure? Come on in. I dare ya.

Bulwark Anthology #9 – The Devil and Dayna Dalton by Brit Lunden @britlunden

The Devil and Dayna Dalton by Brit Lunden is my fourth story in the Bulwark Anthology. This cover really caught my ‘eye’ and I was excited to return to the small town of Bulwark, George and get the lowdown on Dayna.

The Devil and Dayna Dalton (Book 9) A Bulwark Anthology

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

WOW, The Devil and Dayna Dalton by Brit Lunden is the best of the Bulwark Anthology…so far.

Dayna Dalton is a small town reporter in love with someone she can never have. She is considered white trash, just like her mother. She is relegated to writing fluff stories for the paper but dreams of that big story that has some meat on its bones.

I love when she ripped off the T shirt….LOL And that was at 10%, so I am really looking forward to reading on.

Don’t tell her not to do something, because that only makes her more determined to do it.

Hmmm…who is that caped man?

Mrs Sweetpea, well I have a weird feeling about her.

There are strange happening in this small town, but no one is sharing the secrets. It’s all hush hush, so when Dayna hears someone calling her, luring her into the woods, she follows. Now…that can’t be bad, can it?

I love Dayna Dalton. I feel she has been treated unfairly and now that some of my questions are answered everything starts to come together and I can see some happiness on the horizon.

The end of the world one day at a time

In this new apocalyptic zombie series from the author of They Come at Night and Human Flesh, we follow events day for day as the world slowly but surely decends into mayhem as the zombies take over. Don’t miss the thrilling ride!

For fans of The Walking Dead, The Orphans Book and World War Z.

How it all began
:

Three teenagers find themselves trapped in a stuffy, warm basement. The old lady who used to own the house is now dead. She’s also standing right on the other side of the basement door, scraping and moaning, trying to get in. Patiently. Tirelessly.

How did they end up here? Just a few hours ago, all three of of them were sitting in Thomas’ car, sweating and listening to music, not a care in the world. They were almost done with the paper route when they came to the old lady’s house. And that’s when everything turned to chaos.

The cover for Paradise Road by Kat De Fall is nothing special, but anything with trees always gets my attention. I got this as an Amazon freebie back on 10.1.16.

MY ONE SENTENCE REVIEW

Paradise Road is real. so it makes me even more curious, though I know what’s coming, Kat De Fall still manages to surprise me in a fantastic way and I smile at the gruesome ending…which, I strongly suggest you heed the warning and don’t get out of your car…better yet, don’t even slow down.
