One Sentence Review – Pawned by Laura Bickle @Laura_Bickle

Pawned is not my first book by Laura Bickle and it won’t be my last.

Pawned

Amazon / Goodreads

MY ONE SENTENCE REVIEW

Pawned by Laura Bickle is a wonderfully done fantasy of angels and demons, dragons and the mob, and the humans that inhabit a richly developed world, where everything revolves around Raz, his cousin, Carl, and Bert, a demonic lizard, and the magical pawn shop that he lives in, where things are sold and bought, and traded for favors.

Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos
4 Stars

GOODREADS BLURB

For fans of Stranger Things and the works of Neil Gaiman, Pawned is a Young Adult novel that blends dark fantasy adventure and noir — on the New Jersey boardwalk.

You can hock almost anything at my family’s pawn shop…even your own soul.

You think running a pawn shop full of cursed objects with your dad and grandpops is cool? Try it for a week and get back to me. Now try picking up any random object and seeing its creeptastic history play out right before your eyes — yup, that’s my little “gift.” It’s my job to sort out what’s haunted and hexed from what’s not, and do my best to keep all of us — including Bert, our ice-cream-truck-driving-lizard demon — employed.

So it wasn’t all sunshine, roses, and possessed samurai swords even before grandpops’ heart attack — but now things are garden-gnome levels of bad. Dad made a deal with the wrong end of the dark side to save grandpops’ life, putting my whole family smack dab between the forces of evil and our friendly local blow-your-pawn-shop-to-smithereens mobsters. And Lily next door…I shouldn’t even be thinking about Lily.

All I ever wanted was to get out of this crap town and away from my messed-up family, and instead it looks like I’m gonna have to use every scrap of magic in this joint or there won’t be any family left to leave behind…

The Dark In-Between
Elizabeth Hrib
Published by: Swoon Reads
Publication date: May 5th 2020
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

Action-packed and emotionally powerful like big- and small-screen hits such as The Sixth Sense and Supernatural, The Dark In-Between by Elizabeth Hrib is sure to stay with you long after the lights go out.

Something lurks in the shadows between life and death.

A terrible accident brings sixteen-year-old Casey Everett’s life to a halt—literally. Pulled from the water, Casey is rushed to the hospital and miraculously revived. But her sudden return to the living is shadowed by the drowning of her best friend, Liddy.

Overcome with grief, Casey returns home for the summer only to find the memories of the accident won’t let her go. Shadow-drenched nightmares. Whispers in the back of her mind. Her friend’s screams. Casey thinks she’s losing it… until she watches a boy fall from the sky.

Red—an angel fallen to earth to regain his wings—takes her to Limbo, a place that exists somewhere between the living and the dead. Now, in order to save her best friend, Casey must learn to walk these mysterious and dangerous paths or else risk losing Liddy’s trapped soul to something worse than death.

EXCERPT

Casey paces the length of the hall, studying the pictures on the floating mantels on the wall. Most of them are of Evan. There’s some of her too, standing with a younger Evan, their faces wind- kissed, freckled, and crazy- eyed due to copious amounts of sun and sugar.

Casey touches the photo. Her parents had still been alive then.

She follows the tarnished silver frames through a scrapbook of her youth. There’s her and Evan as babies, sharing teething rings. As toddlers, sharing chicken pox. As cubby neighbors in elementary school when they swapped lunches almost every day. Liddy had moved to town in the third grade, got assigned the coat hook directly between her and Evan, and the three of them had been inseparable ever since.

Until now.

The door pops open and Evan kneels, lacing up a shiny black shoe. When he straightens up, she gets a proper look at him. He’s wearing a black dress shirt tucked into gray pants. There’s no tie but he looks . . . good. All sleek lines and sharp points and soft blue eyes.

“You can say it,” Evan says.
She snaps back to reality. “Say what?”
“That I clean up nice.” He tugs on his pant leg. “Even my socks match.”
Casey huffs and turns away as warmth floods her cheeks.

She’s been flirting with this line for a while now. These feelings. That space between friendship and more than. It’s not the right time to cross it. She knows that. Not while they’re both missing Liddy. Honestly, she’s not really sure if there ever will be a right time. Maybe the history between them is better left this way.

“You look nice, too,” he offers. “I meant to say it before.”

Then he goes and says things like that, and Casey’s unsure of everything all over again.

“These are my funeral clothes,” she says, trying to dismiss his comment. She picks at the hem of her dress, crumpling it in her fist and then pressing it back into smooth lines against her thighs.

Evan sighs, hands in his pockets as he sways into the hall. “You can still look nice.”

“Come on,” she says, turning down the stairs. “You’re making us late.”

He follows her to the car and climbs into the passenger seat.

Beside him, she fumbles with her buckle, the nerves start- ing to return. It feels weird being in the car without Liddy calling dibs on control over the radio.

If I have to hear any more of Evan’s easy country listening, she’d say. I’m gonna lose it. He’s like a little old man in the body of a teenager.

The memory almost makes her laugh, but she catches her- self. Casey stares at the radio, then looks away, struggling under the weight of such heavy silence.

Evan reaches over, his hand nudging her shoulder. When he pulls away, he twirls a feather between his fingers and flicks it out the window.

Review – A Soulmark Series by Rebecca Main #RebeccaMain

.

A Soulmark Series, Books 1-3, by Rebecca Main is free at the time I created this post, BUT, I believe there are 5 books in the series.

A Soulmark Series: Books 1-3 (Soulmark #1-3)

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEWS

Coven: As I enter the supernatural world of Rebecca Main, I do so anticipating an adventure and I got one. Zoelle doesn’t know about the supernatural world, and that she is a witch, but when she ‘runs’ into Xander, her eyes are opened. I loved watching her grow and develop into a force to be reckoned with. Xander has definitely met his match

Midnight Soundrel: Quinn Montgomery leads a dangerous life, but she too does not know about the supernatural world. She fights her attraction to Ryatt, but I think we all know she will not be able to resist and will join the Adolphus Pack. She is human, but that doesn’t stop her from making her own mark and facing down her fears.

Wardens of Starlight: Calliope Sawyer has a secret that could cost her her life. I love this character and her willingness to put her life on the line for her friends. I could so easily relate to her, and she has become my favorite character. She’s tough, unstoppable when she sets her sights on what she firmly believes is the right thing. Rebecca Main makes Calliope shine. She wants to be a Starlight warrior and the supernaturals are her enemies. This will all change, when she meets Keenan O’Neal, a werewolf.

I didn’t take any notes while reading, because I was traveling and knew this would be a short review. I grabbed the three book set of A Soulmark Series by Rebecca Main for free from Amazon, and I believe it is still free. I got lost in this supernatural world, with characters that make me want to know more and I read one right after the other. Each book tells a couple’s story, but the overall storyline continues. Because the novels are familiar and easy to know where the author is taking me, no book surprises, I have rated the set as a 3, but each book got me more involved and when I met Calliope my feelings amped up and I raced through the pages. I was so disappointed when I reached the end. When I grabbed the book set, I thought it would be the complete series, but I believe there are 5 total. Will I finish the series? Hard to say, but I surely want to know how the characters can end with a happy ever after.

Demon Hunter – This Time by Azaaa Davis @AzaaaDavis

.

This Time by Azaaa Davis is a wonderful adventure into the supernatural, fantasy world of of Nadira Holden, Demon Hunter.

I love this great cover and Azaaa Davis has done a wonderful job of branding the series.

Cover by Zei Llamas at Deviant Art.

This Time

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

The awesome cover for This Time does not foreshadow the terrifying opening pages. Are you claustrophobic? Afraid of being buried alive?

Nadira is a warrior, a demon hunter, but there is more than meets the eye to her since her resurrection.

Humans and the supernatural world existed side by side. Would they live to regret it? Can you ever trust a demon?

Is she their secret weapon?

Jamie is a character I quickly became enamored with. She takes all the abuse Nadira heaps on her with a smile on her face. She wants to be her friend. She’s got her back whether she accepts her help or not. I become more and more curious about her and what will become of her. I love when an author creates a minor player that becomes as important to me as the main character.

This Time was a nice surprise and a bit different kind of demon/human and other supernaturals in a battle between good and evil. Nadira is a fascinating character and, while I wonder where she will end up, I feel she couldn’t get there without Jaime.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of This Time by Azaaa Davis.

Resurrected into present-day New York, Nadira Holden is asked to save the world … again.

Nadira achieved legendary status when she gave her life to protect humans from the demons. To her, it was yesterday. To the rest of the world, it was twenty years ago.

People have made peace with the demons, worshipping them like celebrities. No one wants to believe that the beautiful creatures who brought magic to humans could be causing the disappearance of so many. When Nadira’s father goes missing, she refuses to play nice. Gloves off. She has to do what she does best. Fight.

Experience why not even death can stop her.

Nadira Holden, Demon Hunter is a fresh urban fantasy series from Azaaa Davis that combines monster-slaying action, family drama, and simmering romance.

Fans of Vampire Hunter Anita Blake, Succubus Georgina Kincaid, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and Vampire Death Dealer Selene are enthralled and eagerly awaiting the next Nadira Holden novel.

Lumina by Paddy Tyrrell – Giveaway, Excerpt & Guest Post @PaddyTy @GoddessFish

Welcome to my tour stop for Lumina by Paddy Tyrrell. Hope you enjoy your visit and don’t forget to enter the giveaway below.

Don’t ya just love that cover?

Luminaby Paddy Tyrrell

GENRE:   Epic Fantasy

BLURB

A generation designed by sorcery to destroy your people. Two races mired in conflict. Can a pair of outcasts unite them against an enemy who would enslave them all?

The birth of ‘bronzite’ babies in Lumina heralds the onset of war. The people take fright at the golden children and banish them from the land. A dangerous move. King Zheldar, commander of the black dragon, is attacking Luman borders. If he wins bronzite support for his army of monsters, Lumina is lost.

Davron Berates cannot share his people’s hatred of the children and, on discovering he has a bronzite brother, sets out to find him. At his side travels Chrystala. A bronzite, she has twice his strength and three times his determination.

When the black dragon kidnaps Chrystala, Davron is faced with a terrible choice: save his friend or save his nation.

Blog tour – Fundinmental  Topic: anything you’d like to discuss about the cover

Recently I made the big decision to publish a new cover for Lumina. I had been concerned for a while that my original cover was not attracting the right audience, and then I received a couple of review comments that highlighted there was a problem.  The cover was not doing a good job of representing the excitement of the story nor giving it the gravitas merited by a war among kingdoms.

So I decided to bite the bullet and make a change, and I was determined to get it right this time! Since this involved investing in an expert, I thought long and hard about what would be important in the design. Lumina is just the first volume in an epic fantasy and so I wanted a cover that could provide a brand for the whole series, while allowing appropriate variations for the next two books. That meant having a central construction or theme and I liked the concept of an archway. I also wanted the eye to be drawn into the middle of the scene.

I thought the colors in the cover should reflect key themes from the book. Lumina is the city of light, and a light star battles the blackness of the demon in the final scenes. So a contrast of light and dark would echo this. Also, the story involves a bronzite race with golden skin and so I wanted some golden colors in the design.

The series is called The Dragonlite Legacy and dragonlites are the creatures that clean the dragon scales. Xeralith the black dragon is an evil figure:

“She was as old as the moss that ate the castle walls. Evil had putrefied her beauty, her once crimson scales stained black by Rach’s corruption. She thrust her head through the opening in the wall. Bony nodules covered her upper jaw and the dark armor plating of her head. Steam belched from her nostrils.

Jaldeen ran and hid behind the font, clinging to the carvings of the demons that served his god, as though they could protect him. He averted his face from the scalding droplets. Xeralith’s breath, heavy with malevolence, contaminated the air with the stench of burning metal and rotten meat. Stomach heaving, Jaldeen forgot to maintain his shield. Her eyes swirled and she locked her gaze on his. Trickles of flame erupted through teeth that could rip him in two. He lost control of his limbs and fell. She lunged at him and he scrambled back, his heels banging on the stone floor. The horns on her sinewy neck snagged against the outer wall and pulled her short. She screeched in frustration.’

In the first draft of the cover, I wasn’t happy with the dragon – wrong color and not scary enough. The dragon that made it into the final version is black with some nasty spines on its back – much better.

The story culminates in a big battle and the designers imaginatively replaced the ‘I’ in Lumina with a sword – I think this looks great. Finally, the cover had to be in a style attractive to epic fantasy readers. I believe the designers (100 covers) managed this very well but I would love to hear your comments and feedback.

EXCERPT

Jaldeen strode towards an ancient font at the far side of the tower and opened wooden shutters in the wall behind it. Leaning out, he checked the platform outside for any decay. It looked solid enough and he stepped over the windowsill and walked to the center. He cupped his hands around his mouth and spelled a summons, his voice a rasp of vowels that floated on the damp air. He ducked back inside. There was a thrash of wings and the tower shuddered. Xeralith, black dragon of Kuhla, had answered his call.

Any fleeting sense of power deserted him in the terror of her presence. She was as old as the moss that ate the castle walls.

Read an Excerpt

I hurry in the direction Emme disappeared and find myself in another dark hall. Bren follows, his large feet stomping behind me. He’s worked up and so is Emme. God, I hate it, and hate the wedge it’s driving between us even more. Emme used to tell us everything, in her own quiet, shy way. Now, she’s so tight-lipped, I couldn’t pry her mouth open with a crowbar. I may end up talking to Bren. Maybe he’ll be the one to crack. “Emme,” I call out. I frown when she appears to flutter further away from me. “Emme. Emme. Wait!” She rounds a corner and disappears into yet another hall. I pick up my pace, passing a library and a small meeting room, only for my steps to falter when the lights dim. I turn around, the rooms we passed are gone, leaving only a long corridor of dark paneling. Everything feels off and I can no longer hear the gentle strut of Emme’s feet. “Bren?” I say. “I don’t know,” he replies. “Come on, let’s find Emme.” I double back and into a wall. “What the fuck?” Bren snaps. The hall narrows, appearing endless, the darkness swallowing what used to be the way out. Bren’s head jerks up. “Did you hear that?” “I don’t hear anything,” I respond slowly. The clanging sounds from the kitchen and distant murmurs from the reception are gone. It’s just me and Bren and our increasing breaths. “What do you hear?” I ask, keeping my voice low. He closes his eyes, listening hard, the rise and fall of his chest growing more pronounced. A light whisper of wind rustles from the darkness, intensifying into a pained moan as it reaches us. “Aw, hell,” Bren says. “Stay with me, okay?” “Ah, sure,” I say, trying to remain calm and more than failing. I turn in the direction I thought I last saw Emme. “Do you think the spells are surging now that Celia has arrived? They’re meant to keep her safe. Maybe they’re reacting to her presence.” I whip around. The wall is gone. So is Bren. I inch backward, my actions dimming the lights further. My right arm shoots up, lighting up like a torch and sparing me from the blackness encasing me. My arm lowers at the sound of splintering wood. I jump at the sight of long streaks of blood that weren’t there before. Blood is never a good sign. It leads from bad to worse every damn time. Most would run at the sight of streaking blood. Me, being me, and knowing there’s no other escape, follows the streaks as they expand into a widening pool. My light strobes in and out, in tune with my accelerating heart rate. The horrible silence returns, adding an extra coat of eerie. Don’t be afraid. It doesn’t last. The moans resume in another few steps, loud enough to muffle my rattling teeth. It’s cold here, similar to the chill that accompanies death and the presence of spirits who want to make you one of them. I reach another wall. The end. I release a breath, cursing when more moans course through the narrowing space, these much closer. Carefully, I turn around, stopping dead when the streaks of blood move and form letters. N-Y-T-E-S… My light shakes from my violent trembles. A-R-E… The letters darken as the blood dries and cakes the wooden floors. C-O-M-I-N-G I jolt when something crashes on the level above. I don’t wait for more of this twisted spelling bee. I take off in a sprint, shaking might right hand. “Get us to Celia,” I tell it. I stop abruptly and just miss crashing into a wall that appears. I shake my arm harder. I don’t typically order Sparky to do anything. I can’t. As connected as we are, she’s practically a living entity with her own set of rules I’ve yet to figure out. “Come on, girl,” I insist. “Celia needs us.” More by instinct than anything Sparky does, I spin, almost screaming when I see a new set of words have formed along the wall.
