My Adventures #15 – Thunder on the Gulf

The weather has been beautiful, but very hot here on the Gulf. That does not stop us from enjoying outdoor activities.

There is always something going on here in our little piece of paradise:

Where thousands live like millions wish they could!!!

This weekend, Flora-Bama is sponsoring the 2014 Thunder Run Superboat Grand Prix.

The Gulf Coast Powerboat Association has put together the inaugural dual race format.

There are two races, in two cities, in two states – Orange Beach, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida.

Mr Wonderful and I went to downtown Pensacola, where the event was being held for day three of the Flora-Bama Shootout.

These are some of the fastest and biggest power boats in the world.

There are many classes of boats, but the main styles are Vee Bottom Boats and Catamarans.

The air is thick with moisture, making it hard to breath and we are immediately dripping wet. It is the cheapest sauna I have ever been in. LOL

We take our time as we walk through downtown and checking out all the action.

I love boats and I love speed. These amazing power boats put on a performance that had my heart pounding and my body vibrating with the roar of the engines. To watch the rooster tails shoot out of the water as the boats thunder by makes me wonder what it would be like riding along on race day.

Even though it was only practice, they put on a great show.

We wandered through Race Village, able to check out the boats up close and personal.

Music was playing and a good time was had by all.

Mr Wonderful freelances as a producer/director for the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, our minor league baseball team. They delayed the game today, Sunday, due to Thunder on the Gulf. He will be going back to the races, then working the ballgame, so I chose not to go. That’s why I am sitting in my recliner, watching football (yeah, it is finally football season, lol) and blogging to you.

What did you do this weekend?

My Adventures – The Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway

I can hear the rumble of their engines

I can feel the vibrations flowing through the air and into my body.

My blood is rushing through my veins.

My heart is pounding with excitement.

Snowball Derby season has arrived.

I live close to Five Flags Speedway, so it is not unusual to hear the roar of the engines as drivers hit the pavement to practice every chance they can.

I always look forward to this premier event, The Snowball Derby.

It falls on December 4 – 8, 2013, but there is plenty of pre-race excitement.

The first week of December, the annual 300 mile super late model stock car race is held at Pensacola’s Five Flags Speedway, and has been since 1968.

It is known for attracting some high profile drivers. A few of the past winners are Kyle Bush, Darryl Waltrip, Dick Trickle, Steve Wallace, Chase Elliot and Pensacola’s very own Joanna Long.

It was a little breezy and chilly, 60 degrees.

Now, just wait a minute. Don’t get your panties in an uproar. I know some of you are wearing down coats and waterproof boots, battling through the wind and snow.

For me, if there is a breeze, if the sun isn’t shining on me and it’s under 75 degrees, I get chilly. I know I am a wuss, that’s why I live in Florida.

I want 80+ every day – shorts, t-shirt and flip-flop weather.

Soooooo, if you are ever in Pensacola during the first week of December, stop in to Five Flags Speedway for The Snowball Derby.

My Adventures – Living Life 110%

Living life 110% is our motto.

I invite you to come along on my adventures and I would love to hear about yours.

The weekend was chockful of wonderful things to do, but it wasn’t hard for us to choose what events we wanted to attend. The beach is one of our favorite places to go. People watching is a fun past-time and there are always some interesting characters wandering around. But this weekend had some added bonuses, like the Corvette Car Show and A Taste of Pensacola with Andrew Zimmer.

I jumped at the chance to see all these speed machines at the Corvette show. I am a lover of muscle cars and it seemed like every Corvette – from vintage to current – was in attendance. The roar of the engines vibrated through the air, making me want to jump in one and go for a joy ride.

A Taste of Pensacola with Andrew Zimmer took place at the Pensacola Beach pavilion. I waited for him to wade into the Gulf and come out with some kind of freaky food, but he stayed with a traditional Gulf staple – Shrimp.

Andrew Zimmer did some stirring and a little sampling along the way. We visited the Hooter girls and had a couple of Bloody Marys to quench our thirst.

Just look at those beautiful shrimps. Makes your mouth water, doesn’t it?

The presentation was appetizing and corn bread is a southern mainstay not to be missed. Andrew Zimmer was very entertaining and hospitable, taking time for a meet and greet after the show.

On to Captain Fun’s for the Alabama football game. Captain Fun’s is the place to go on the Boardwalk to get your football fix with some diehard Crimson Tide fans. Alabama did not let us down. The game was a roller coaster ride of emotions, keeping us watching until the final whistle was blown.

Number 1 Alabama still rules and The Tide beat Texas A & M – 49 to 42.

We topped off the day with the The Romantics Concert at the Blues Angel Music School, celebrating 130 years of Gretsch guitars.

MY REVIEW

When my grandpa died, my mom thought he was murdered. To keep Kimmy, my sister,  and I safe, she sent us here, to Pensacola.

Jewels and I were sitting in her car with the radio blaring when he pulled up in his 370Z.

I was used to guys hitting on me at my old school, but I never knew if they were after me or my money. At my new school, I downplayed myself and tried to stay under the radar. He seemed interested in me for myself. I was drawn to Evan, but I had no intention of getting involved with anyone from Pensacola. I would be going home as soon as we straightened out the mess back in Palm Beach.

I left school, only to find my car wouldn’t start . I was going to  be late picking up Kimmy at her school. I panicked. Evan told me he could give me a ride, but no way was I going to let that happen. I didn’t want anyone knowing anything about us. I saw he was getting very angry and I began to feel the first inkling of fear. The custodian came and saved me. He popped the hood and saw the battery cable was loose. I know that doesn’t just happen by itself.

The next day at school I saw we had another new addition, Ryan. He was hot and, even though it was obvious Jewels was interested in him, he seemed more interested in me.

I finally broke down and invited Evan to church. I ended up blurting out my whole story. Still something about him scared me, made me not trust him. Then why did I tell him my secrets? Could it get me killed?

Which guy was good and which was bad, Evan or Ryan? Who cared for her and who wanted her dead?

4 STARS – Would Highly Recommend To Others

The cover is deceiving. When you read the book, it will become obvious why it was chosen, as will the title.

I was drawn to the book because it mentioned Pensacola High School. I thought, cool, I know Pensacola very well. I was curious to see if I traveled the same roads as Annalisa. We drove down Cervantes and Fairfield, the scenery very familiar to me.

The book started out like I thought it would. A lot of teenage angst. A menage a trois. l never saw the twist it took coming. Caught me by surprise, but drew me deep into their story. I began developing my own hopes and dreams for them. Then I began racing through the pages, eager to see what would happen next.

Annalisa was not a big risk taker. She was secretive. No one at school was wise to her capabilities; but she knew martial arts and could drive the wheels off most any car. She thought her mom was going crazy. She didn’t believe that her Grandpa had been murdered.

She had a voice like an angel. She sang Christian rock. I always think that is odd, Rock n Roll bands and church. But why not?

Evan was hot, but he seemed older than a high school student should be. More than once, Evan said something that would puzzle and scare her, but she never took the time to think it through.

Ryan was hot, too. She was suspicious of him, because he knew about rich people and Palm Beach. Did he know who she was?

Mentioned Hoobastank on the Ipod he sent to her. “The Reason” was the only song on it. I saw them at Amos Studio, at Pensacola State College. I had never heard of them before then and the first song they sang was, you guessed it, “The Reason”. I thought, small world.

This is an awesome book. I loved it. I thought the premise was ridiculous, at first. Then I thought of all the Criminal Minds I have watched. Didn’t seem so ridiculous then, because I love Criminal Minds and some of their storylines are way out there.

I read the Prologue for unforgivable. Now I have to know what happens. A must read for me. I am so hooked, even though I feel the journey they take would never happen in real life, only through the author’s words. But that’s cool. It is a book after all, fantasy and fiction.

I can’t give it a five, because of too many editing errors.

I received this book in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Quotes

“Life is a dally experience. God gives us a fresh chance every morning to discover what’s out there.”

FOTM – Flavor  of the Month

“Maybe the old saying about keeping your friends close and your enemies closer came about because your enemies could sometimes be more interesting.”

“This could get ironic, the hitman gets emotional and the victim goes cold.”

I have been shooting the Blue Angels here in Pensacola for many years and this is the first time I have captured this.

This is one of the most amazing photos I have taken of them as they come through at low altitude, screaming and creating an amazing vortex of speed and condensation.
