The year is coming to an end and I was looking at my 2019 Alphabet Soup Reading Challenge to find out what I was lacking and I needed a J. I looked through my Kindle and found Just You, Me and a Secret by Ganga Bharani Vasudevan. I picked it up on an Amazon free day, 6.7.16.
There are some definite bumps and bruises in Ganga Bharani’s first novel, but I am so happy I grabbed it on an Amazon free day.
I love the cover and it fits the story perfectly!
When I first began I struggled a bit. It reads like an ARC, rough around the edges, but I persevered and am glad I did.
Meera has lost her memory and her future husband, a doctor, is helping her to regain it. She reads her diary, Clara, and learns about her life. For some reason she is drawn to San, her lifelong friend, more than to Ashruth, her intended. Could the bash on her head have changed her that much?
As the story unfolds, I find myself getting more involved in her life and I am hoping she comes to the same conclusion I have.
The ending makes everything worthwhile.
GOODREADS BLURB
Just You, Me And A Secret is a story of an amnesiac, Meera, who battles between her past and present.
Meera Prabhu wakes up after a terrible accident with absolutely no memory of herself. She sees a stranger in the mirror and seems to be living with another stranger, Ashruth. Ashruth, a doctor by profession and a clown by appearance, claims that he is her fiancé. They were engaged to be married and would have been married already if not for the accident. He keeps on emphasizing on how much she loved him and yet, he keeps her apart from her family for her ‘mental state’. Armed with what seems to be her personal diary, Meera tries to grasp her identity and her reality. But no matter how hard she tries, she just seems to be unable to connect. Will Meera break through the hurdles in front of her and be able to connect to her friends and family again? Most importantly, will she ever regain her identity again?
“Too many twists and turns to easily share about this book. Nevertheless, Carr has pulled off another “hit” that kept me reading in one setting until the clues were so well together that the villain fell into our laps…or Chris’s, LOL Carr has put a lot into the book beyond the mysteries this time…Characters enjoyed chocotinis, visited book stores…and even blundered into getting engaged (the ring had been purchased 4 months ago)… But, for me, a special thank you for the political spoof at a time when politics at the national level is devastating, gave me a laugh and lightened the load of it all!” – Review by Glenda Bixler, Book Reader’s Heaven

“Filled with twists and turns, Winter Frost
reads perfectly well as a stand-alone, although it is part of a series.
The author creates tension and suspense throughout by keeping the
reader guessing; she keeps readers engaged with well fleshed out
characters and a dash of humor. Sterling, the retired German Shepherd
police dog turned card shark, is a new favorite. As the story flows, the
truth unfolds, layer by layer, leading to a satisfying conclusion.
“Winter Frost was an entertaining, at times humorous read with suspense, some surprises, and even cute animals in the mix.” Review of Winter Frost by The iRead Review
MY REVIEW
All right. Back with the Geezer Squad and a freezing cold case.
We start out with Blair witnessing multiple deaths as she runs for
her life. No one to trust, it’s up to her to find her way to the
director of the CIA, with the disc. She has secrets and comes face to
face with one of them…Chris.
Chris has retired to a farm, but when he sees Blair, he has a lot to
investigate…so, with the help of the Geezer Squad he begins.
From the opening pages the action begins and it doesn’t stop until the end.
The characters are tough, resilient, trained professionals. Nigel,
with his trust guardian Tristan, is also on the case and pulls a fast
one of me. I love surprises and this was a doozy.
I love the visual imagery throughout. Here is an example and I think it will easily portray my feelings.
The hundred pound dog repeatedly leaps, all four feet off the floor, to peep through the door.
I cannot begin to describe my love for Sterling and was going to
share some of my favorite thoughts about him, then, I thought, I don’t
want to spoil the surprise for you. Lauren Carr’s fabulous critters
offer many moments of smiles and laughs with their distinct
personalities, right down to Thor, the bunny rabbit.
I just want to let you know, if you see a German Shepard with
sunglasses and an FBI hat, don’t get in his way. He’s probably on a
case.
A conspiracy within the government. A high level official crossed
over the line, turning traitor. Car chases. Bullets Flying. Danger rises
and they are in a race against time.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Winter’s Frost by Lauren Carr.
Book Description: It all started with a chance encounter in the city with Blair, his late wife.
Chris Matheson and the Geezer Squad,
working under the guise of a book club, dig into the events surrounding
his late wife’s supposed death halfway around the globe. A state
department employee shoots himself in the back three times. A CIA
operative goes missing. A woman is targeted by an international assassin
three years after being declared dead in a terrorist attack overseas.
Nothing is as it seems.
In his most personal cold case,
Chris fights to uncover why the state department told him that Blair,
the mother of his children, had been killed when she was alive. What had
she uncovered that has made her a target? Who terrified her so much
that she had gone into hiding and why are they now after him?

“ICE is a
strong start to a new series that will have fans of Lauren Carr thrilled
to be introduced to another set of memorable and entertaining
characters. Carr’s Geezer Squad has brought sexy back to mature men and
women, whose kickass attitude and smarts sizzle as they melt the clues
to those cold cases!” Laura Fabiani, Library of Clean Reads
“For the whodunit mystery buff who loves ever-increasing suspense and
danger, Lauren Carr’s newest series offers up a big dose of both. Murder
and mayhem seem to be Chris’s new companions after returning home
following the loss of both his wife and his father. Juggling the
parenting responsibilities of his three daughters with his mother is not
something Chris was expecting at this point in his life, but life isn’t
something that goes as planned.” 5-Star Review at Blooming with Books
Book Description: When Sandy Lipton

With the help of a team of fellow
retired law enforcement officers, each a specialist in their own field
of investigation, Chris Matheson starts chipping away at the ice on this
cold case to uncover what had happened to Sandy and her baby and the
clues are getting hot!

I first found Sibel Hodge by participating in a tour by Partners In Crime and never looked back. Whenever I see her name, I immediately check further. This will be my third book by Sibel Hodge and I have loved every one of them.
Their Last Breath has a powerful cover that definitely fits the storyline. Done by BlackSheep.
I love the simple but powerful cover and it definitely pertains to the story inside. Does it make you curious? Good! I love Sibel Hodge’s work and was so excited when she gave me a copy for review.
Detective Warren Carter retired…with a haunting secret, so when the call came from the Chief Superintendent of the Professional Standards Department, he was on full alert. She wanted his help and gave him free rein to investigate. He felt the justice system failed many, all politics, all the time, so he didn’t always follow the rules, going rogue and I like that. I feel his frustration. This time, it was with approval.
Nice touch, with the old neighbor. I felt his feebleness, oldness, loneliness.
I wondered how Warren and Becky’s cases would intersect.
Their Last Breath by Sibel Hodge is one of those books that takes off early, ticking me off, getting my emotion in an uproar. Human trafficking and enslavement. The reason for the women’s abductions was a new one for me and that just added to my disgust. I loved trying to understand what could possibly make someone think that is okay. Delving into the minds of twisted characters fascinates me.
Becky…she eats often…she’s a grazer. I almost snorted out loud. LOL Sibel Hodge’s writing. She creates complex characters and she knows how to ‘show’ their personalities.
Early on, I find HER very fishy. My spidey senses are tingling and instinct is a valuable tool when reading, writing, and investigating.
I love flawed characters and Warren is one for sure. I would want him and Becky in my corner if I am ever in trouble. Their tenacity and instinct lead them to success.
Well done, Sibel. You hooked me from beginning to end. The characters are filled with depth and personality and that made me me love and hate them. The storyline is one I am familiar with, kidnapping and trafficking, but you added that little bit extra that I am always looking for, getting my emotion in an uproar, filling me with disgust at the villains and empathy with those that can find no way out of the position they find themselves in, just because they wanted a better life. Their Last Breath has the feeling of reality, of events that go on today.

This is my introduction to Michaelbrent Collings and I wonder why I haven’t read any of his work before. I immediately remedied that after reading Scavenger Hunt and followed his blog, getting two more books to read just for signing up.
Michaelbrent Collings does his own covers and I LOVE this one. How about you?
As soon as I saw the cover, I knew I had to read Scavenger Hunt by Michaelbrent Collings. Why I haven’t read any of his work before, I can’t say, but I am glad HE found ME and offered me an ARC.
At first, I was confused and thinking, uh oh, is this one of those books I am going to struggle through. Well, I didn’t have long to wait to find out that I was too quick to judge.
THEN: The bottom dropped out of five lives as they are thrust into a deadly game of Scavenger Hunt and I quickly find out how the bloody smiley face on the cover comes into play.
Bloody, gory happenings as we flip between the past and the present, learning each characters life, exposing the reason for them being chosen to PLAY the game.
The camera is on and it could be watching YOU!
There’s more going on than the Scavenger Hunt. We have Thaddeus…a rich muckety muck and Hope, a young girl haunted by her past.
WOW…WOW…Scavenger Hunt is turning out to be so much more than what I expected. Michaelbrent Collings has a wicked mind. I haven’t read a book quite like this and it took me to a really dark place. I love the DARK.
I wondered how the stories would all come together, why these particular characters were chosen and it took me a while to see the common factor. As each character’s history is revealed, the threads weave together, though the perpetrator continues to elude me
I love the ending, and for all you high and mighty muckety mucks out there who think you are above the law…BEWARE.
You may think the same thing I did when I first began reading, but don’t give up too soon. The story just keeps getting better and better as it unfolds.
Scavenger Hunt’s originality, fast paced action and tension filled pages makes this an unputdownable book. I read it in one day, while at the dentist, at the eye doctor and finished it up while watching my Detroit Lions play the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football. Anything that takes my eyes off the game has to be great!

I have been reading and reviewing some books that authors have requested and they have been a pleasant surprise. Nightfall on New Babylon by Carmen Taxer and Richard Wheeler is one of these books.
Nightfall on New Babylon by Carmen Dominque Taxer and Richard T Wheeler is told from multiple character viewpoints. At times I found it confusing trying to remember who was who and what’s happening to them, but I do love my vampire stories, so I read on and I’m glad I did.
Things started falling into place. Characters are being exposed for who they truly are. Horrors arise and they are not only the vampire kind.
The women seem to pay the biggest price. As I learn more about the four main characters, I find their lives tragic and frightening. There is more going on than meets the eye and the ending set me up for wanting to know what comes next.
The setting seems like the time of Jack the Ripper in England, but I could visualize the street and ruins of Italy too.
Cliffhanger ending that hooked me.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Carmen Dominque Taxer: Author, artist, and sometime philosopher, Carmen Dominique Taxer was born in South Africa with familial roots across the globe. She began her career with early scribblings of the dark and twisted, and this love of dark Gothic Horror, and equally dark Romance, has only grown over the years. Her first love was vampires, and to this day she cannot write without the words pouring out in the shape of roses, blood, and thorny kisses. Carmen uses the presence of vampires in a fictional setting to give voice to the struggles and successes of humanity, painting a portrait of the world that is both dark and beautifully highlighted with love conquering death above all else.
She and her husband and co-author, Richard T. Wheeler, have constructed a universe of these vampires with the affectionate title of Sanguinem Emere. All of these stories take place in the fictional city of New Babylon, a melting pot of cultures, ethnicities, and desires.
About Richard T Wheeler: Richard T. Wheeler is the co-author of the Sanguinem Emere Gaslight Vamp novel serial and runs Dauntlesswriting.com, helping writers become authorpreneurs.
I was given an opportunity to read some of this anthology and I began at the beginning with Bulwark by Brit Lunden. The short stories/novellas are sold separately and to me they read as standalones. This is the third story I have read and enjoyed.
Bulwark is a small town, where everything revolves around football. I lived in Alabama for a while and they are some of the most avid fans I have every seen, so I can easily relate to this.
The Darkness by Brittney Leigh is written like a diary. from Sophie’s perspective.
Meeting Sophie, I feel, is going to be a real hoot. She did put a smile on my face early on, so I am eager to see what kind of trouble will seek her out.
And…it being Bulwark, I knew the trouble would be of a paranormal kind.
Secrets will be revealed, bodies will fall.
We have all the teenage angst of high school as these four kids will solve the puzzle of Billy Joe’s disappearance. It is the past clashing with the present.
The Darkness by Brittney Leigh is the eight book of the anthology. Though I have only read two others, I had no trouble enjoying this one. Fast reading with characters that are forever changed.

Bulwark- a wall or stockade that protects or sometimes hides the truth from the outside world.
Bulwark, a quiet town… or is it? Four best friends, Sophia, Scott, Chloe and Chris, are just trying to manage their senior year at Bulwark high school when Sophia realizes that her feelings for Chris are really meant for Scott. Before she can deal with that though, the four friends then stumble upon Bulwarks darkest secrets when a spell is cast on Bulwark High. Students have been disappearing and no one has any clues as to their whereabouts. With a town curfew set and parents on edge, the four friends decide to take things into their own hands. Will they break the spell, or will Bulwark High and the town be changed forever? Based on Bulwark, a paranormal thriller by Brit Lunden, The Darkness is the eighth volume in the multi-author Bulwark Anthology.
ABOUT BRITTNEY LEIGH
Brittney Leigh is gracing the Bulwark anthology as a debut author. She is a proud graduate of SUNY Old Westbury College, with a bachelors degree in Media & Communications. Gifted in singing, acting, and dancing, she finds her voice reaches its highest ground in writing. She resides in Long Island where the darkness of New York City comes to sleep.
Ashley King is afraid of the dark and from her past experiences, she has every reason to be. I feel so bad for her. Her fear of the dark and her only escape was pills to sleep and forget…for a while.
Todd gave her his parience and support, but he would not force her to do anything she didn’t want to do. He could only hope it would be enough.
Hunter Shea did not take her to a place I thought he would, and I love that he can throw me for a loop right out of the gate. When she hangs herself, it caught me totally off guard. All I could think is WTF? Now what? I can only imagine the pain and horror she lived through as it wore her down, a little more each day, until she couldn’t take it any longer…being the ‘final girl.’
Todd could not let it go. He has to go back where it all began. He has to know. And he will.
Once they crossed the boundary between the real world and Hayden lands, they are on his turf, and the horror begins.
Much of Slash by Hunter Shea is predictable, but Hunter is good for a twist or two.

ABOUT HUNTER SHEA
Hunter Shea is the product of a misspent childhood watching scary movies, reading forbidden books and wishing Bigfoot would walk past his house. He’s the author of over 17 books, including The Jersey Devil (Pinnacle 2016)), Tortures of the Damned (Pinnacle 2015), and We Are Always Watching (Sinister Grin). Hunter’s novels can even be found on display at the International Cryptozoology Museum. The Montauk Monster (Pinnacle 2014) was named one of the best reads of the summer by Publishers Weekly. He was selected to be part of the launch of Samhain Publishing’s new horror line in 2011 alongside legendary author Ramsey Campbell. His video podcast, Monster Men, is one of the most watched horror podcasts in the world. Living with his crazy and supportive family and two cats, he’s happy to be close enough to New York City to see the skyline without having to pay New York rent.
Well, the cover for The Truth Circle by Cameron Ayers definitely makes me want to walk in the woods. LOL Is that a dream catcher I see? Six go in…what is in store for them?
Six people go on the adventure of a lifetime and it is so not what they expected. Their minds will be tested and their lives put on the line…a journey to self discovery.
I am not anticipating an easy journey for them and it was a giant surprise to me too. I love the Indian mysticism included.
Wade is the first to be affected and it happens immediately. He’s self centered, arrogant and follows his own path. Is it because he is mentally stronger than the others…or is something else going on?
The group are joined together, yet each follows their own individual path. When left to their own devices, their personalities overshadow any common sense.
This review is hard for me to write, because the words I want to say are difficult to find. I guess I will ask you some questions and see if that helps you see what I saw.
What breaks us down? What brings us together?
I think The Truth Circle by Cameron Ayers is a fabulous debut novel, a psychological horror thriller that delves deep into the human psyche.

Unable to escape or contact the outside world, they
must adapt to this harsh environment to survive, even as burgeoning
rivalries slowly splinter the group into warring factions.

MY REVIEW
A Darker Shade of Evil is an anthology of fabulous authors and because the book is 15,061 pages on my Kindle and I am only at 6,205, I will be sharing four soul sucking novels and highly recommend these steamy reads for adult only.
Alone in the Dark by Khardine Gray – USA Today Bestselling Author
Forbidden love. I’m hooked. It seems to go hand in hand with the supernatural world that I love to get lost in. Some very hot, steamy sex, but the story takes priority. I quickly fell in loe with the characters and the supernatural world they live in. Witches, lycans, werewoves, fae, good and evil, battle as a war brews and the threat of Razal rising looms on the horizon. What more could I possibly ask for? Well, I was sad to see it end and that’s what I am asking for…MORE, because it ended all too soon. 4 Stars
The Devil Upstairs by Dariel Raye – USA Today Bestselling Author
He rose from his grave, after a very long time, and he knew that mean war was on the horizon. He was the last of his kind and that made me very curious about him. It’s Christmas and with it come memories of how he came to be. His mission has a name: revenge. Kat is unemployed, with no one to care but her best friend, Shell. What is she doing going out partying and rent is overdue? She felt pulled…and watched. I can relate to her inability to keep her mouth shut when angered Words came out without censor. She is naive and innocent, and she has no idea of what is coming. Forbidden love. Wow. Intense, hot sex and a love to last a lifetime….however long that may be. 4 Stars
Soul Bonded by Lori Titus – USA Today Bestselling Author
Natasha had been brought up to not be chasing demons. Well, obvious to me that’s gonna change. Christopher had become a drunk since leaving Special Ops. How will they come together? Enter: Victor Ramshead. Natasha cared for her mom, who has dementia, but couldn’t keep a caregiver because she would blurt out their psychic visions and scare them away. Her parents trained her about the supernatural world, but she is gonna need to bone up on it to face what is to come. When the demon wants you and makes an offer you can’t refuse, well…What price will be paid? It felt like a prequel and gave me just enough to want more of the good and evil characters and the fight to come. 3 Stars
Succubus Unleashed by Muffy Wilson – USA Today Bestselling Author
I knew the girl that would steal my heart would be different, but not this different.
Sapphira must find a mortal man to stand at her side and rule the clan as Queen Mother, all while perpetuating their species by producing children, being new blood into the fold. She marveled in her new body as I tried to figure out exactly what she is and when I did, I loved it! She is a water creature, and I am hooked right there. She has scales and wings, and now, two legs. The feelings Brock invoked in her were new to her. Is he the one? They would have to fight to together, and she was ready when he called. I was quickly caught up in her sweet innocence and couldn’t help but love her. I fell right into their insta love. It was magical and easy. Wow, just wow. Intense romance and hot sex, along with the lovin’. 4 Stars

I saw the cover for The Earthdead and it made me curious. At first glance, it looks like it could be a children’s book, .then, I looked closer at the hand on the tree. That’s not a very nice hand. The title made me more curious, so I had to read it.
The Earthdead by Mark James Wooding was a quick and dirty read. LOL
Rebecca woke up with something heavy on her chest and a bad taste in her mouth.
The Community of Men are on the hunt for Rebecca. The town knew the rumors of Earthdead rising from the ground to feast on humans.
The Earthdead is a different take on the Undead and looking at the cover I was fooled. I thought it was a children’s book, I didn’t foresee the gruesomeness, but the deaths are not the ususal bloody or gory for zombies….maybe when she seeks her revenge Rebecca will do worse.
For it’s originality, fun and entertainment value I give it a three.

GOODREADS BLURB
A certain fungus brings
corpses back from the dead. After the dead revive, they become stronger,
faster, and smarter than they were. They can also travel underground.
And there’s only one item on their menu: human flesh.
Two
local lodges, the Community of Men and the Community of Women, must once
again step up to defend the county against an evil that most people
don’t even believe exists.
