A Book For All Ages – Earth Shot by Stephen Henning #stephenhenning #sciencefiction

Amazon / Kindle Unlimited / Goodreads

Earth Shot by Stephen Henning is suggested for those 9 and older and I loved it. Earth Shot made me think of ET, with the 3 friends, one of them being the younger sister, but it didn’t take long for the differences to start to show when we get to know the dying alien and Magic.

Sure, THEY wanted to find the aliens, but the kids weren’t going to help them. Not only are the kids hiding from the military, but they are also hiding from the evil alien that wants to kill them all.

Magic is awesome. At times I felt sorry for him, but he’s only a machine, a tablet. I can only imagine how enamored a child would be, maybe, like me, at times forgetting it’s not alive.

I had so much fun with the kids, dodging bullets and danger, while soaring through the skies. The action was non stop, keeping me flipping pages. At times, I laughed, at times I was scared, but I never lost faith in the children.

This is the second series of Stephen Henning’s I am reading and I love his work. It keeps me entertained for hours at a time. I find the characters personalities shine throw, keeping me involved, wondering what is going to happen to them next.

A dying alien begs you for help, but it’s not your problem ‘cos you’re just a kid. Right? Three young friends witness a UFO crash in a remote Suffolk forest and are forced to make a will they help a dying alien stop Earth from being plunged into war? If so, they’ll have to trust their lives to a know-it-all computer nicknamed Magic, with its array of clever gadgets; take on a dangerous, shape-shifting enemy; break into a US Air Force base; and find a way to reach an orbiting spaceship. Ultimately, they’ll have to rely on one another’s loyalty and friendship if they are to stay alive and save the world.

Stephen Henning

I began writing the first Class Heroes book on my laptop in February 2011, but these stories have probably been continually playing in my head since I was aged five or six, when I would act them out with toys and with my friends. I then branched out into using pencils, colouring pens and paper, moving on to writing pads and then my first computer.

So, as you’ve probably gathered, I have always enjoyed making up stories and the super-hero genre has been one of my favourites.

The CV-type stuff is that I went to Sheffield Hallam University to study English. I then trained and briefly worked as a journalist in Salford. After that, I moved into publishing – which was great. An interesting and fun industry to be in and fascinating to see how books are put together and sold.

After that I started doing technical writing, which led me to start my own business with my friend and colleague Andrew Butters. My love of writing, generally, led me back to writing fiction. Our company, Elucidox Ltd, publishes the Class Heroes books.

If you want to know a bit more about me, what kind of super powers I have and the kind of super villains I have to tangle with on a daily basis, then feel free to watch Rage. This is a short film, that took a long time to make. It’s a simple day in my life :-). Actually it’s just a fun movie that I made with the very kind help of some of my best mates. We had a laugh doing it, hope you like it too. And if you do, then why not explore the super world of the Class Heroes books?

In his literary debut, B.A. Bellec writes an endearing coming-of-age tale about a group of weirdos that find and save each other from the dark depths of their minds. Review – The Corpse Whisperer Sworn by H R Boldwood @BoldwoodH @SDBookTours

Amazon / Goodreads

Corpse Whisperer Sworn by H R Boldwood is the third book in the Corpse Whisperer Series and I am fortunate to have them all, thanks to the author. The books are quick reads, because it’s hard to stop myself from racing through the pages.

With a gun in one hand and a blade in the other, Allie Nighthawk searches the streets of New Orleans for the necromancer, Toussaint. Who will win the face to face confrontation?

She can raise the dead, but spends most of her time putting down the freshies, flesh eaters and corpsicles with the help of her hotty, wantta be boyfriend, Ferris.

As I picture the zombies from The Walking Dead, I am laughing most of the way through the blood and guts, the zushi. The writing is humorous, even when they are shooting, slashing and stabbing, and their lives are on the line.

Review – Defy by Raine Thomas @Raine_Thomas

Amazon / KindleUnlimited / Goodreads

I have been reading a lot of murder stories, which are some of my favorites, but when I read Defy by Raine Thomas, I was more than ready for a change of pace. I am familiar with the Estilorians because I have been reading the series and lovin’ every minute of it. You might not get the fullest enjoyment of the story unless you begin at the beginning with The Prophecy, but I read it out of order and was hooked.

The pain was unimaginable.

…and that was the opening sentence. I was immediately hooked….again. 🙂

  • Defy: To challenge the power of; resist boldly or openly; to defy parental authority.

And that is how Tate ended up alone in the jungle and met Zachariah and Nyx. Poor Zachariah. You might think poor Tate because of the way Zachariah treats her, but he doesn’t know any better and he fights the attraction he feels for her.

The world that Raine Thomas has created is richly developed and the characters are sure to grab at your heartstrings. I love that the Estiloreans no longer have feelings…you know, like us humans. It made me think of Lucifer and how he had to learn what it meant to be human…and so do the Estilorians.

I loved walking step by step with Tate as she was forced to grow up. The characters that surround her have their parts to play and I loved getting to know them.

Even though it had been a while since I read the earlier books in the series, everything came back to me quickly. That only happens when I loved the stories so much they stuck in my head, whispering in my subconscious, saying, READ MORE. I am happy to say that I will, because Raine Thomas made sure I have the rest of the series on hand.

Seventeen-year-old Tate is about to make her parents’ dreams come true. Unfortunately for her, their dreams foretell her death.
Eager to explore more of the Estilorian plane and prove her abilities, Tate goes against her parents’ wishes and leaves the area of protection surrounding her home. Her choice puts her on a deadly path…one that leaves her alone, severely injured and battling for her life.
Her possible savior arrives in the form of Zachariah, a male who has removed himself from Estilorian society for more than fifty years. Fighting an unexpected connection to Tate, he must decide whether saving her life is worth destroying his.
As Tate struggles to find a way home, she ends up drawn into a dark Mercesti plot involving multiple murders and a powerful ancient artifact. With the unpredictable Zachariah as her only source for aid, she’ll soon find out if her abilities are strong enough to help her defy her Fate.

What Does It Mean To Be Human? The Reenchanted by Surit Dasgupta #suritdasgupta #thereenchanted

Amazon / KindleUnlimited / Goodreads

Short stories and novellas are harder for me to review than a full length novel. Sometimes, an author doesn’t have time to fully flesh out the story, making it seem as if they are skimming over the details. That is how I felt when I first began The Reenchanted by Surit Dasgupta. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. The good thing is….the more I read, the better the story became.

The Reenchanted by Surit Dasgupta feels like a nice blend of science fiction and apocalytic/dystopian reading. The characters struggle to find out the meaning of life, when they have moments of clarity. Otherwise, they are drugged to become more amenable.

All in all, I was satisfied with the story, especially that last half to third, where the characters were really put to the test. Want a story that takes you outside the norm? Give The Reenchanted by Surit Dasgupta a try.

The Traveler and Seven are mere spokes in the wheel of a city called Sanctuary. Their lives are uneventful and without conflict, but soon something causes them to start asking questions. Can human beings exist meaningfully in a world without personality? Can a person ever truly be free? What does it mean to dream? What does it even mean to be a human person? These questions do not bode well with the authorities and soon the Traveler and Seven are forced to embark on a journey that will change their lives forever.

Review – They Left Magic In Their Wake by Marilyn Peake @marilynpeake

Amazon / Goodreads

The depth and detail of Marilyn Peake’s character development and world building makes the story come alive on the pages. The book centers around five tribes. Some of the people are imbued with magic, some not. Some are alien, some are not. The groups do not interact…until…they are chosen.

We open with Zadie, and I am immediately engrossed in her world. I cannot imagine going through what she does, and doing it alone…until her friend Nora shows up. It is rare to have a friend as loyal and giving as Nora.

Marilyn Peak has wrapped the apocalyptic/dystopian chaos in magic and science fiction. Us humans have wreaked death and destruction on Earth. I love books that bring the real world into fiction, making me wonder…What would I do in their place?

“You guys really messed up your home turf, didn’t you? What’s the expression? You shit where you eat.”

Marilyn Peake has laid a solid foundation for the series and I am excited to see where she takes it.

At the end of the world, there will be magic.

Earth has been decimated by climate change. Humanity has fractured into isolated tribes. A child born in the southwestern desert of the United States appears to have magical powers, a strict taboo in his part of the world. In four other locations, people discover magical items. No one knows how they work or where they’re from. Although these strange objects capture the imagination, using them is risky and dangerous.

The five tribes at the heart of this novel:

Southwestern Desert Tribe: Zadie and Nora have fled their tribe where human reproduction is so rare, pregnant women are burned at the stake as witches. Zadie gives birth to triplets, only one born alive. The surviving infant shows signs of having magical powers, another punishable taboo.

Northeastern Mountain Tribe: Finley is a young boy too curious for his own good. Meddling with strange technology he finds in a cave, he eventually boards a flying ship that takes him far away from the only world he’s ever known.

Tribe in Akihabara, Japan: Exploring post-apocalyptic Tokyo, Emiko, Katsuki, Rin and Ko discover ancient manga and D&D items, as well as glowing cubes they mistake for dice. When the long-dead neon lights of Tokyo begin to flicker, the teenagers get caught up in the most intense adventure of their lives.

McMurdo Station Tribe—Located in the Land of Magical Ice, Formerly Antarctica: Settlers at the abandoned McMurdo Station practice a form of mysticism, their ancestors having fled religious persecution as well as the droughts and fires of Australia. Arthur Campbell and Harrison Clark are researchers studying the strange technology that runs the place.

Vostok Station Tribe—Located in the Land of Magical Ice, Formerly Antarctica: The original settlers of the abandoned Vostok Station fled the extreme heat, fires and droughts of Brazil. Years later, giant squid and a spaceship emerge from Lake Vostok as the ice begins to melt. Salvador Siqueira and his crew leave their station to investigate.

Review – Titan’s Tears by Chad Lester #chadlester #titanstears

Amazon / Goodreads

I was slowly drawn into Chad Lester’s world in Titan’s Tears. A world that was not easy to comprehend, but the more I read, the more familiar I became with the characters and the storyline and I do love when an author unfolds the details in a surprising way.

Science fiction and technology…used in a good and an evil way. Titan’s Tears is one of those thought provoking books that makes me ask…Just because we can do it, should we?

Four characters are drawn together on an isolated island off the coast of Alaska. Robots, and a Jurassic Type jungle are not the only things that are dangerous. Treachery and betrayal are around every corner.

Titan’s Tears and the ending didn’t go the way I thought and I do love when an author is able to surprise me. Great job, Chad. The story may have started slow for me, but as I got familiar with the characters and story I got more involved in the characters lives. I began to feel a sense of urgency. Fiction/Reality, sometimes there is a fine line between the two.

Review – Wet, Warm And Noisy: A Jake Ward Novel by David A Wilson @dav_willson

Amazon / KindleUnlimited / Goodreads

This is one of the few times where a title catches my attention before the cover. If you want to know what is wet warm and noisy, well, you’ll need to read the book for yourself.

I have been recovering from a serious illness and wanted a book to blow me away. Wet, Warm And Noisy didn’t do it, but the blend of law enforcement and the supernatural kept my attention. The things Jake Ward goes through has me wondering what will be left of him when all is said and done. It is suitably creepy and I did find myself cringing as he was poked and prodded.

As Jake Ward follows Belle Anderson down the rabbit hole, the danger rises. He has no idea what’s in store for him….and neither did I. It didn’t end the way I thought, and I love it. I look forward to going on more adventures with Jake Ward and David A Willson.

A supernatural crime thriller set in Alaska, the Last Frontier…Surrounded by the unforgiving climate of the frozen north, Jake Ward, a tenacious Alaska State Trooper Investigator and cancer survivor, is on a relentless quest to regain his health and return to full-duty status.

But Ward’s world takes a bone-chilling turn during a routine polygraph examination when a woman escapes custody, leaving an officer critically injured. What started as an ordinary investigation transforms into a complex web of intrigue, where medical experimentation and consciousness collide.

In “Wet, Warm, and Noisy,” Willson masterfully blurs the boundaries between law enforcement and the supernatural, leading readers on a heart-pounding journey through a realm where the tangible and the mysterious intersect. With time slipping away, can Ward decipher the enigmas that defy reason, or will forces that transcend human experience overwhelm him?

Author David A. Willson, with over two decades of experience as an Alaska State Trooper, brings a rare authenticity to crime fiction that will both enlighten and captivate you. Prepare yourself for an electrifying thriller that challenges the very foundations of our reality.

EXCERPT:

Chapter 51. Messages to Die For

Professor Ron Jefferson

Bursting through the front door, Ron immediately bolted it from the inside and pushed against it with all his weight. He felt as if he was being pursued. It seemed to him that they would be here in a minute to take him to a distant underground grave and separate him from his son for years.

With the frenzy of a mad scientist, he tore himself away from the door and dashed up the stairs. Desperately searching through a stack of papers on the desk, he sought that particular notebook. He distinctly remembered placing it on the edge of the desk . . .

No, it must be in the top drawer . . . No, dammit, where is it?

The thought that people from the Consortium might have already rifled through his papers and taken the precious notebook shot through his head.

Oh, here it is, on the coffee table by the chair. I must keep a cool head. I’m still in control.

In a flurry of movement, Jefferson swept the papers from the table, snatched up the notebook, frantically flipped through its filled pages, tore them out, and secreted them in a hidden pocket. Then, ripping out a blank sheet, he scribbled down crucial information in a hurried, nearly frantic script, struggling to maintain his composure. Time was of the essence, and he feared they might arrive at any moment.

This made Ron cast anxious glances at the locked office door after every few lines.

“They don’t even need a key, do they? They don’t even need a damn key . . .” he mumbled, startled by his deteriorating mental state.

After filling both sides of the sheet, he hastily folded it several times and concealed it in a spot that strangers would overlook. Still, its intended recipient would undoubtedly uncover—inside the double bottom of the dracaena plant pot.

They won’t find the letter. They just can’t. It must not fall into the wrong hands.

Jefferson paced the room for a minute, uncertain what to hold onto. Then his eyes landed on a picture of his son on the table.

The boy was smiling, hugging their favorite dog.

“Rover . . .” Jefferson whispered.

He opened the adjacent break room and found a golden retriever sleeping peacefully in the middle of a large bed. The dog perked up and bounded toward his master, then jumped with his front paws on his chest.

As Ron stroked Rover’s back, a new plan crystallized in his mind. He decided not to take the priceless notes with him but to hide them in the house, just as he had hidden his letter, in an even more secure location. Here, in the favorite soundproof room of his ever-barking dog.

“Soundproof . . .”

That word triggered a chain of thoughts. He retrieved his cell phone from his pocket, muttering, “I still have some time.” His eyes gleamed with frenzied determination.

A knock on the door made him wince.

“Professor Jefferson, do you require assistance with your packing? Your capsule departs in an hour. We must hurry.”

Ron locked Rover inside the break room so he wouldn’t witness his beloved master leaving. With three heavy steps, Jefferson reached his office door, slowed down . . . and opened it, fully aware that he would never be back to his cozy house again.

Review – In The Doldrums by Simon Dieppe #simondieppe #inthedoldrums

Amazon / KindleUnlimited / Goodreads

I have gotten on a huge apocalyptic/dystopian reading binge and when I saw In The Doldrums by Simon Dieppe’s cover I got even more curious. Without looking, what do you think is on the cover?

BOOM

Someone pushed the button and hell and chaos was released. Will humanity be able to survive? If you don’t die from the bomb, what about the fallout? Would you want to be one of the survivors? It’s not just the power grid being obliterated, food, water, and medical supplies becoming scarce, but you know it will be survivor against survivor.

Donal O’Brien is one of the 27 survivors on the Thalassa, a container ship with a vast ocean separating them from land. They had parked themselves In The Doldrums, a belt around the Earth that allowed them to tread water, saving their fuel. But, how long can they survive, before they have to find somewhere to replenish heir supplies?

I had also remembered that Kirk, Spock and Bones were always accompanied by at least two junior members of the crew, who were invariably cannon-fodder for humanoid lizards and aggressive robots.

In The Doldrums was a bit different from my usual apocalyptic/dystopian reading, considering it takes place on a ship at sea. We all know that sooner or later they are going to have to seek out other survivors. Will they be hostile?

Simon Dieppe didn’t waste any time getting into the crisis. He supplied food for thought, seeing we are living with so much instability all across the globe. Are you of the ilk that no one would be cruel enough to push the button? Myself, I go back and forth on the subject. We have so many volatile leaders, it’s hard to not think about it.

The pacing kept me involved and I loved the ending. After all, we need hope to keep us putting one foot in front of the other. So….if you are looking an intriguing read that is sure to keep you guessing, it would be hard to go wrong with In The Doldrums.

Thanks Simon, for the opportunity to read and review a free copy of In The Doldrums.

4 Stars

A strategic, manmade global pandemic.
A nuclear response.
A new, dark age for humanity.

Two weeks before, washed-up writer, Donal O’Brien, boards the container ship Thalassa. In a last-ditch attempt to gain literary immortality, he has left his life behind to immerse himself in a new world – a world he hopes will inspire him to create his masterpiece. He is to tell the story of those who live at sea, those whose work invisibly greases the cogs of modern consumerism. It is a world of ingrained inequality, a melting pot of nations, a soup of stories.

Then, as the ship reaches the quiet of the Mid-Atlantic Doldrums, humanity implodes.

Unsure of what remains of the world they left behind, the crew of twenty-two must find a way to survive – not only from the catastrophe that surrounds them, but from each other.

In the Doldrums is a speculative psychological thriller, murder mystery and examination of the human condition all rolled up into one.

For lovers of literary dystopian, post-apocalyptic fiction who enjoyed novels such as Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven and Hannah Jameson’s The Last.

★★★★★“A beautifully written post-apocalyptic tale. The juxtaposing themes of hope, despair, loneliness, fear, paranoia and friendship are all explored and navigated expertly. The geographically, scientifically and historically accurate facts grounds the story in realism and allows you to truly picture the settings and places from the story.” John Athan

★★★★★”Clever writing in a future that is entirely believable.” S.Bowsher

★★★★★”Really good, chillingly appropriate for the times.” N.J. Blake
