MY TEASE

“I’m fine Renee. I really am. Please don’t worry about me. It takes to recover from…

“It’s been a year. We’ve all been patient with you, especially Mark. You have to do your part.”

What did they want from her? She didn’t understand. Not at all. Did they really expect her to erase the incident from her life? Why couldn’t she talk about it? Why couldn’t she remember it? Why did it bother everyone so much that she didn’t want to forget?

(page 100 in paperback)

How does a mother get over losing her child? How long does it take. I have never lost a child, so I cannot say, but I would guess it takes as long as it takes and sometimes a person never does get over it. I cannot imagine the pain and anguish of letting your child go. Trisomy 18 is real and personal for Taylor Dean and her family and I would like to thank them so much for sharing their story in the form of a novel.

OMG – They took her – The Body Market @dvberkom with Guest Post & Giveaway

First off, I would like to welcome DV Berkom and I will be sharing her novel, The Body Market. She has also written this fantastic guest post and will be awarding a paperback (US & CA) or ebook (International) to one lucky commenter…So…read on and be sure to leave a comment, whether it be about the guest post, the cover, or just to say hi.

I love Leine Basso, a kickass ex assassin and here is what DV has to say about:

Writing a Killer as Your Main Character by DV Berkom

I’ll admit it—I’m not, nor have I ever been, a paid killer. Shocking, I know. But the main character in my Leine Basso Crime Thriller series is. And she’s also a woman.

Why on earth would I want to create a female protagonist who killed people for a living? Aren’t authors supposed to write sympathetic characters? Aren’t we supposed to create someone to root for? To empathize with?

According to readers, I’ve achieved that with Leine. But it wasn’t easy. First, let me explain the why, and I’ll follow that up with the how.

When I initially dreamed up the idea for Serial Date, the first book in the series, the only characters that were fully fleshed out in my mind were the contestants and “bachelors” on the reality show Serial Date. In a parody of the long-running and popular reality show The Bachelor, beautiful women vie for a date with a so-called serial killer. The bachelors aren’t actually serial killers, of course, but it’s implied for the audience’s titillation: Are the contestants safe? Will the audience witness an attempted murder? Better yet, a real one? Of course, the show becomes a blockbuster hit, and we’re off and running. (And yes, there’s a healthy dose of satire and dark humor in the book. How could I resist?)

From there, I imagined the main antagonist; a serial killer who watched the show religiously. The killer becomes incensed at the ineptitude of the show’s alleged serial killers and decides to take things into his own hands. Soon, a contestant is found dismembered inside a prop closet, necessitating better security on set.

Enter former assassin, Leine Basso.

I needed a protagonist who would be a good match against a serial killer, and I love to write strong, kick-@ss women. Why not fight fire with fire? A killer versus a killer.

The latest in the series, A Killing Truth, takes place before events in Serial Date, when Leine worked as an assassin for a shadow agency tasked with eliminating terrorists and enemies of the US. I’d had several emails from readers requesting a prequel explaining events that I allude to in the other books. And, since readers rule, I complied. Writing A Killing Truth was a lot of fun and really challenging. Fun, because I got to write Leine’s story when she was at the zenith of her career as an assassin, and challenging because I’d set up events in the other books and had to figure out how to make the story work with what I’d written.

So that’s the why. How does a writer make a character sympathetic when their actions are anything but?

Give the main character a flaw (or ten or twelve).

Leine has baggage. A lot of baggage. In A Killing Truth, not only is her profession getting to her (she can’t sleep, can’t compartmentalize what she’s done), but during a routine job she barely escapes with her life, and is beginning to suspect that she can’t trust her boss. Add to that raising her 12-year-old daughter by herself and worrying about her lover, Carlos (another assassin), and you’ve got a wee bit of stress to throw her off her game.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand reading about a perfect heroine who can fight the bad guys without getting a scratch, and then comes home and whips up a gourmet meal, deals effectively with her ornery preteen daughter, and still looks amazing when her lover shows up at the door. Nope. Can’t empathize. I’m lucky if I keep up with the laundry, much less produce seven gourmet meals a week. Or even one J

Yeah, I probably wouldn’t relate very well to that character.

Suffice it to say, aside from killing bad guys for a living, Leine’s got a lot to deal with. Who hasn’t had a bad day? Admittedly, Leine’s bad days are pretty gnarly, but you know what I mean. I like to think of Leine as the kind of person folks would like to know and have on their side. Someone who rarely makes mistakes on her job because the repercussions could be fatal, but a person who has to deal with challenges and heartache, just like the rest of us.

What about you? What kinds of characters really speak to you?  Do you need to be able to identify with them in some way, or do you enjoy characters that are totally different from you? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

***Special bonus: I’m giving away a signed paperback (US & Canada) or e-book (international) of The Body Market to one randomly selected commenter. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the wonderful post, DV. I know you do a lot of research and writing about a killer, not being one yourself, can’t be easy. LOL

This awesome cover for The Body Market by DV Berkom grabbed me and never let me go. It is a story of human trafficking, which unfortunately, is still very active in the 21st Century. I love a strong female protagonist and Leine Basso fits that bill very nicely as she battles them.

MY REVIEW

The Body Market’s title, cover, tagline and DV Berkom’s name as the author, tells me this is a story I can hardly wait to read. The Body Market is one novel in the Leine Basso series, but all the books can stand alone. The characters are ongoing, growing and changing with each book, becoming more complex, with all their foibles exposed.

A rich couple, too busy for their teenage daughter, will learn the pain and anguish of discovering their child is missing, possibly in a foreign county. And, Elliza, the pretty, rich American teenager will pay the penalty for partying in Mexico. She is the ditzy blond you hear about.

I used to read  a lot of Mafia books in their heyday and I love assassins, especially a strong female one, like Leine Basso.

Leine Basso is kicking cartel ass from the opening pages. She is stubborn and will rebel when threatened. She is learning to live a real life instead of always running off to her next assassination. I love that she kite surf’s with her main man, Santiago Jensen. Santiago is new to monogamy and attempts to romance Leine. Don’t you love a man who cooks for you? I am lucky to have one of those too. I love the dialogue between them, at times humorous and fun.

She works for SHEN – Stop Human Enslavement Now and he is an LAPD Robbery/Homicide detective. I lam in favor of her idea of hand grenades and flamethrowers for dealing with sex traffickers.

I was surprised Leine didn’t know about the bad guy…but I cannot say more.

If you are looking for action from the getgo and a story that will have your blood boiling and your emotions running AMOK, pick up The Body Market. Leine Basso will have you kicking ass and taking names as she makes the bad guys pay. Will she be in time to rescue Elize? You will have to find out for yourself.

I received a copy of The Body Market from DV Berkom in return for an honest review

Former assassin Leine Basso is hired by a wealthy Beverly Hills power couple to find their missing daughter, Elise, last seen partying with her boyfriend at a club in Tijuana. At first, police believe the two teenagers are the victims of a carjacking. In the lethal world of organized crime, there’s always a worse.

As Leine races to uncover the reason behind Elise Bennett’s disappearance, she must also battle the powerful interests fighting to keep her from the truth.

Image of D.V. Berkom ABOUT DV BERKOM

DV Berkom is a slave to the voices in her head. As the author of two popular thriller series (Leine Basso and Kate Jones), her love of creating resilient, kick-*ss female characters stems from a lifelong addiction to reading spy novels, mysteries, and thrillers, and longing to find the female equivalent within those pages.

Raised in the Midwest, she received her BA in political science from the University of Minnesota and promptly moved to Mexico to live on a sailboat. Many, many cross-country moves (and several years) later, she now lives just outside of Seattle, Washington with the love of her life, Mark, an ex-chef-turned contractor, and writes every chance she gets.

I am reading my way through DV Berkom’s The Leine Basso Thrillers:

I am also reading my way through DV Berkom’s Kate Jones Thrillers:

FOR NICK by taylor dean

I am thrilled to have Taylor Dean on my blog today. For my peeps, you will find a familiar name. Welcome Taylor and take it away. Oh, be sure and read to the end to enter the fantastic giveaway from Taylor.

From the Author
I admit, when I wrote FOR NICK, I wanted to write a tear-jerker.
Why do women sometimes love books or movies that make them cry?
Good question.
Some ladies tell me they hate anything that turns on the waterworks. They say they feel utterly depressed when the book or movie is over.
Not me.
Image courtesy of [iosphere] / FreeDigitalPhotos.net
It makes me feel like I’ve experienced the meaning behind life, as if I’ve found the truth behind this crazy journey.
There’s something about observing the human experience without actually having to live through it. Perhaps it’s just learning what it’s like to walk in someone else’s shoes.
I feel somehow refreshed and my life seems so much better than before. I realize my problems and trials are not that bad after all.
Having a good soul-cleansing cry lifts my spirits and makes me feel in touch with my emotions.
My daughters and I will bawl like babies while watching a touching movie and then pronounce how good it was, leaving the men in our lives baffled and rolling their eyes.
That being said, I love a happy ending so I can smile and laugh after all those tears.
An HEA is a MUST HAVE in all of my books. FOR NICK is no exception.
I don’t consider myself to be much of a comedian, but the ending of For Nick always gives me a good giggle.
For Nick will leave you, at first, liking the hero, then falling in love with him, having sympathy for him, becoming irritated with him, feeling all out mad at him, then falling in love with him again–and laughing at his very human frailties.
Enjoy the ride!

MY REVIEW

Taylor Dean can spin a tale that will tug at your heartstrings and For Nick is no exception. I used to think that contemporary and inspirational fiction was not my cup of tea, but authors like Taylor have won me over. The fabulous writing and realistic characters have the ability to touch my heart and leave me wanting more.

I knew right away something was wrong and what would happen but not why. Taylor’s writing grabs my attention and doesn’t let go. She will lure you in, starting out all lovey dovey and sweet, then BAM!

Zachary’s grandfather had given him a choice. He had one year to find someone and marry, or he would lose his inheritance.

He chose Andie, because she said no in a firm and funny way that intrigued him. I couldn’t help but smile at her response to him.

The deal, one year of marriage, one episode of consummation, one million dollars.

The dance of love, when all is bright fun and breathtaking. The banter between him and Andie is fun. They act like kids in love, sometimes goofy and playful.

Why are we so closed that lack of communication can ruin something so good? I get frustrated with no communication. The “funny” thing is, it complicates real life too. Taylor has a way to make her characters come to life, draw you in, and never let you go.

The saying curiosity killed the cat is so appropriate, but I will leave it to you to find out why for yourself.

The restaurant scene not only broke my heart, it pissed me off. Tissues required.

I was already on verge of tears, but when Andie said “I’m scared,” my tears flowed and my throat tightened. I couldn’t see the words through my tears streaming down my face. I tried to read through them so I could find a happy place to take a breath. Painful and sweet, laughter with the tears, isn’t that life?

The story is predictable, but the journey is an adventure I was delighted to be on.

For Nick smacks of the Pretty Woman movie, with Julia Roberts, fairy tales and miracles.

Taylor has a way with endings. You think you know it, but she puts in a special twist that clutches at your heart, yet fills it with joy. She adds that little twist that will make you smile and crave more. I want to tell you so much more…but I am done.

This is a story you want to learn on your own, no spoilers from me.

I received a copy of For Nick by Taylor Dean in return for an honest and unbiased review.

SYNOPSIS

What would you do for love?
Zachary Drake had love in his life—and tragically lost it. He knows it won’t come his way again. Andie Parker would do anything for the love of her life.

Even marry a total stranger.

In spite of the unorthodox manner in which Zach and Andie come together, there is no denying that things are unexpectedly good between them, taking them both by surprise.

However, when secrets come between them—and trust does not—Andie soon finds herself vowing to never make the same mistake again. But, she’d do it again in a heartbeat and she knows it. She’d marry a hundred strangers if it helped Nick. She’d do anything for Nick . . . anything.

New Release & Giveaway: Girl of Mine by Taylor Dean

Taylor Dean’s newest book is now available!

GIRLOFMINE

The book trailer:

The song that inspired me while writing GIRL OF MINE:
(Watch until the end. There’s a surprise!)

A interesting tidbit about GIRL OF MINE:
My dad always worried about the cost of the electricity bill. If he walked past my bedroom and noticed that my light had been left on, he would turn it off and holler,
“That’s okay, Taylor, I got your light.”
It became a bit of a joke in our household. My siblings and I loved to try and catch my dad leaving on a light, just so we could say,
“That’s okay, Dad, I got your light.”
Now that I’m an adult with my own family, the term takes on new meaning.
The message behind it has worked its way into my new novel, Girl of Mine.
My father brought me into this world, he cared for me, and he taught me well. He gave me my “light,” my life.
He nourished my “light” and helped me become the person I am today.
So, Dad, thanks for getting my light.
I’ll always be grateful.

Awesome new covers for Lancaster House and The Middle Aisle by Taylor Dean

COVER REVEAL!
.
Brand new covers for Lancaster House and The Middle Aisle!
.
~A paranormal romance series by Taylor Dean~
.
.

Lancaster House was the first Taylor Dean book that I read. I loved it, but when I read The Middle Aisle, she won me over for life. It has one of the best endings I have every read. Even now, months later, it pops into my mind off and on.

I have always thought her covers are very original and I love the painterly effect.

Buuuuut. I totally agree with her decision to change them. I think these beautiful and fantastic new covers are going to scream from the shelf, “PICK ME! PICK ME!” What do you think?

My Review for Lancaster House    /     My Review for The Middle Aisle

.
.
I love my OLD covers. (Pictured on the left.) I really do. They’re different from the norm and that’s why they captured my attention. For Lancaster House, I liked the idea of a hand reaching out from the grave. It seemed appropriate to the story; Andre reaches out to Zoe from beyond the grave. It was Carrie-like and kind of creepy.

There’s just one problem.

This is not a horror novel. Not at all. This is a paranormal romance. People who like horror are drawn to the cover and are sadly disappointed when they realize it’s a romance.
.
People who love paranormal romance are turned off by the cover because it looks too creepy. In other words, the cover just wasn’t working.
.
.
.
.
.
I love The Middle Aisle cover because it matched Lancaster House so perfectly. And part of the story takes place in Monterey, California. Monterey is known for its Cypress trees. The tree on the cover of The Middle Aisle reminded me of a Cypress tree and seemed perfect.
But, if the right people aren’t reading the first book, no one will ever read the second one no matter what the cover looks like!
.
Bam! Decision made!
.
It was time for new covers for Lancaster House and The Middle Aisle! I love the new covers because they speak so perfectly as to what’s on the inside..

Without further ado, here they are, the new covers!

Great timing for Taylor to release Joshua’s Folly. How about something warm to drink?

Who would think hot chocolate could hold so much meaning?  It will never be the same after you read Joshua’s Folly and find out the special meaning it holds for Marissa and Joshua.

Feel free to make yourself a cup, pull out your comfy blanket and let’s find out what is so intriguing about hot chocolate.

photo goodreads-badge-add-38px11_zps1ae6e47f.jpgNight was so peaceful for 11 year old Marissa.

Mary said would things would get better, but Marissa didn’t think so.

Marissa couldn’t sleep. She would walk the halls, but when she saw his photograph on the wall, she felt better.

His name is Joshua.

Joshua’s Folly is a romance novel, without ghosts, the supernatural or murder. It is not a novel I would normally choose to read, but because it is by one of my favorite Indie authors, I knew I would read it no matter what it is about. I did enjoy Marissa’s story and for you romance lovers out there, Taylor Dean is an author you will want on your TBR list.

Joshua actually has two Follies. One is his Garden of Eden on the ranch, the other…………….you will have to read the book to find out.

Marissa had lost her parents at eleven years old and I cannot begin to imagine what that would be like. When Mary finds out that Marissa wanders the house at night, gazing at Joshua’s photograph as if it is a lifesaver, she gives her a copy and tells her he will be her guardian angel. I thought, oh no, get out the tissues.

“A smart aleck firecracker and a “guardian angel.”

Joshua is raising his child alone and Mary arranges for Marissa to spend time at Joshua’s ranch, helping out with his daughter, Bethany. Bethany has advanced social skills and language because she spends most of her time around adults. My son was the same way, so it was easy to relate to her.

I love the banter between Marissa and Joshua. Bethany joins in and I couldn’t help but smile and laugh right along with them.

Taylor’s romance is always clean and I chuckled when she describes Joshua’s thoughts on kissing Marissa. You will have to read for yourself to find out how sweet it is.

Taylor talks about Marissa having one thought in her head, while having a conversation at the same time about something different. Do we ever really know what people are thinking, even as  we are speaking face to face?  Do it and see if anyone catches on.

“Josh, you have a great sense of humor. Don’t use it to tear people down. Use it to

build people up.”

I know something has to happen and I felt Marissa’s sadness and her heart plummet when it does, even though I know it has to end with happy ever after. Now that’s good writing.

This is a ROMANCE, a simple love story. I was told that Joshua’s Folly was not like Taylor’s other books I have read, but I love her writing so my expectations are still high. She has a way of writing that gets me involved. The characters are well developed and I find them easy to relate to. They sound as if they could be your friends and family.

A couple of times the story slowed for me, but I still enjoyed Joshua’s Folly. For all you Romance lovers out there, this is a sweet, clean love story that will warm your heart and leave you with a happy ending.

I received a signed paperback copy of Joshua’s Folly in return for an honest and unbaised review. Taylor wraps the book up in a lovely package. Thank you Taylor. I will be reviewing For Nick next, so be sure and come back to check out another of my Taylor Dean reviews.
