LYING, CHEATING HEART Synopsis

No More Lies!

Cassie Vera thought the biggest threat to her life disappeared the night her boyfriend, A.J. Vasillios, used his one-time-use power and saved her from certain death.

She was wrong.

The mythological hit list she was on is nothing compared to her freshman year at the University of Las Vegas. Rooming with Vegas’s future female royalty has pushed her estrogen tolerance to its limit. Worse, Cassie must take place in a time-honored tradition that tests her faith, while her boyfriend’s new job threatens to shatter her heart.

When age-old traditions change …

Cassie’s school year is interrupted when the future queens are ordered to represent their houses in an annual high-stakes competition. While at her ancestral home in Malaga, Spain, Cassie discovers the Greek gods have gifted her with new abilities. Cassie takes matters of righting an eighteen-year-old wrong into her hands. However, actions have consequences, and Cassie’s may very well end up costing her and the House of Hearts everything.

With her family’s future at stake and the love of her life choosing sides, Cassie must cheat death one more time.

When duty requires you to do the unthinkable, where will your loyalties lie?

Only a Cheating Heart Knows.

EXCERPT

Crazy had a way of becoming normal, even expected in Las Vegas. What used to have us gaping and entranced now became predictable. Which made me worry. How would all of this look in four years? How much would we have changed? And how different would we be when we were our mothers’ ages?

In front of us, Helen walked, spinning around every few steps to make sure she took in all of Freemont Street. Mesmerized by the sites and the sounds. She bumped into a girl wearing a G-string and tasseled pasties on her boobs, passing out flyers for a topless bar. Helen’s face blushed, and she couldn’t get away from the girl fast enough. Olivia kept walking, and Gia next to me barely gave the incident a second thought. The extraordinary had already bled out of those two future queens.

Gia pulled me closer to her. “The morning before I left, I did a shore run. Three miles to your house, three miles back to mine.”

“Yeah?” I already knew where this conversation was headed.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were putting the Malibu house on the market?”

“Why? You interested? I can guarantee you it doesn’t have any happy memories radiating from the walls. And the people who made it a home are gone.” I chewed on the inside of my cheek, willing the emotions to stay away.

“Maybe it’s waiting for you to make new ones.”

“And maybe you should wake up and smell reality.” I pulled in a deep breath, my nose wrinkling at the stench of the Shadows Catacombs at the end of the street. “This is our future, Gia. This and that.” I pointed at the cursed man in a black hood watching us. Even at this distance, the lack of life in his eyes made people walk around him, avoid him. “There is no going home.”

“You know I don’t believe that. My mom made a new home. She had a career in front and behind the camera. She had friends. She had people who loved her. You don’t have to follow in Carina’s footsteps, being lonely and sad.”

I tried to pull my arm from Gia’s, but she clamped down on it, refusing to let me go.

“Gia.”

“You know I’m right.”

The perky cheerleader from my past life stood toe-to-toe with me, a small muscle undulating along her jaw as she ground her teeth.

“I know everything I thought about Carina was wrong or misinterpreted. I know there are things you want me to acknowledge, emotions I have to feel.” I stomped my foot, wanting to take the stupid move back the minute it left my brain. “Carina keeps telling me to grieve, not stuff my emotions. I’ve done it. They’re gone, Sara and Steven, they’re dead . . . because of me. I accept that. Keeping a house or talking about what they meant to me isn’t going to make my future any better. The best thing I can do is leave the dead as food for the worms.” I started to leave, tears thickening in the back of my throat, but Gia wouldn’t let go that easy.

“You don’t get to steal the best line from Dead Poets Society and leave. You have to own your past, or you will repeat the mistakes. Here is where you own what happened. Here, where this all started, is where you come to terms with the fact that you’re not alone. You have us.”

“Ladies.” Olivia wrapped an arm around my waist; her eyes searched mine, looking for something. She’d probably had a talk with Carina, as well. They were all waiting for me to lose my shit and go Richter. Helen laced her fingers with mine. The chaos of Fremont Street dulled, the lights didn’t shine as bright, the noise muted—even the tourists seemed to slow down. In our own cocoon of silence, the four of us looked at each other, wondering what would happen next. What did the future hold for us?

“Great bonding exercise, Gia,” Olivia sassed. “Don’t pout, you’ll get used to my barbed love bites, but I gotta ask: why right now?”

Gia looked around our little group. “Because you can’t build a future on a foundation of lies.”

“I never lied,” I bit back.

“You did to yourself when you put your parents’ house on the market and said it didn’t matter,” Gia answered.

MY FRIDAY 56

Even so, the spell of seduction Hunt had woven over Powell still held:  Everything and everyone involved in the MicroCosmic deal would come out golden if Hunt’s scheme succeeded. Because Anthony Tiburon Hunt had gotten his hands on the invention of the century:  a superconducting microprocessor.

MY BOOK BEGINNINGS

The church was dark until John Fortunato struck the match. The point of light revealed rows of votive candles in red glass sleeves. John touched the match to a wick.

“God keep you Jamie Doolan,” he murmured.

GOODREADS SYNOPSIS

As a soldier in Vietnam, John Fortunato fought in the crushing darkness of the tunnels of Cu Chi, from which the Vietcong launched their deadliest operations. Back home in Elk River, Illinois, he secretly re-created those deadly tunnels. Partly a memorial, partly a kind of exorcism, they now lie hidden beneath the town’s peaceful streets.

But that peace shatters when Fortunato witnesses the brutal sidewalk shooting of an innocent victim. The vicious crime is only the first assault by a man who will wage a full-scale battle to control Elk River. And on the front line is John Fortunato, whose secret tunnels will provide the battleground for his own war. As his enemy is about to learn, when this veteran warrior goes down, he’s just beginning to fight.

The Halfling by @hd_gordon

H D Gordon’s new Aria Fae Series kicks off with The Halfling and I am so excited to share it with you. I have read most of her work and she never fails to deliver on the goods!

What do you think she is looking for?

The Halfling (The Aria Fae Series, Book 1)

MY REVIEW

The Halfling by H D Gordon is the first book in The Aria Fae Series, a paranormal fantasy that exceeded my expectations with fantastic writing and characters that grabbed hold of me and wouldn’t let go.

Aria knew she couldn’t run from her past, but here she is, in a new place. She is a skate board riding Fae, part of the Brokers, an organization of Halflings, half supernatural and half human. She is an empath and I cannot imagine how difficult that would be in high school. Her empathy and need to help gets her in trouble, but I love her for it. How can I resist a strong character who marches to her own drum?

She meets up with Sam, a girl hacker who becomes her BFF and it changes everything. I love the little nerd, Sam, who is your typical teenager…except for her supernatural skills. I love the connection that brought them together, but you will need to find out for yourself. The girls fun personalities and watching them grow and blossom as they create their family kept me on pins and needles as I kept waiting for the bad to happen. I know it has to come, but I love these kids so much I don’t want anything to happen to them.

Thomas Reid is a hottie and I think he is holding a secret that will add more to the suspense.

H D Gordon can take a familiar theme and twist it so creatively that it becomes fresh and original. Her descriptive writing makes the story seem real and I am unable to resist being drawn in deeper with each page I read. The Halfling has so much that I love, the paranormal, fantasy, determined women (albeit young ones) and so much more. As the story grows, so too does the suspense and mystery. I never saw where this was going and I love when a book exceeds my expectations. I can hardly wait to see what happens next.

I received an ARC of Halfling by H D Gordon in return for an honest review.

Goodreads Blurb:  When Aria Fae gets cast out of the Peace Brokers, a secret supernatural organization that’s trained her since infancy, and is left to fend for herself in the human world, she finds herself in Grant City, intent on attempting a normal human life.

As a Halfling, Aria has abilities that are a little underused in the flower shop she lands a job at. And when her new friend Samantha Shy enlists Aria to help investigate her mother’s death, the two girls decide to become vigilantes.

A new drug called Black Magic is running rampant in the streets of Grant City, turning people into supercharged maniacs. With Sam’s mad computer skills, and Aria’s Faevian abilities, they may be just the heroes Grant City is in need of.

Or they may find out they’re in way over their heads, and their mutual crush on the same guy is the least of their worries.

A Marissa Meyer Celebration – Glitches, Cinder and The Queen’s Army

Welcome to my reviews of 2 novellas and a novel by Marissa Meyers. She is a fantastic writer and I hope you enjoy.

Feel free to leave some comment love for her. ^_^

GlitchesIn this prequel to Cinder, Glitches (a novella), we see the results of the plague play out, and the emotional and physical toll it  takes on Cinder. Something that may, or may not, be a glitch….

Even though everyone in the household isn’t happy Cinder is there, Peony welcomes her new sister with open arms. I immediately fell in love with Peony. Peony’s wonder, acceptance and zest for life are endearing. I found humor in Marissa Myer’s writing. I had previously read Cinder and loved it, so I was very happy to read Glitches. As I had thought, it is a wonderful glimpse into how Cinder became who she is today. If you loved Cinder, you will want to read her “bio” and meet her new family, with all the good and bad that entails.

My Review

I reviewed Cinder back in June of 2012. It was one of my first book reviews ever. I had posted it on Goodreads, but did not have a blog until shortly thereafter.

Cinder, the best mechanic in New Beijing, was working at the market when the Prince stopped in to have his android repaired. Even though she was a cyborg, she felt flustered and lost control of her brain’s net connection. Her human part made it hard to focus. As she studied the android, they agreed to meet the next market day to check on the status of the repair.

Adri, Cinder’s “stepmother”, hated her. Adri’s husband had made them guardians of Cinder, an 11-year old cyborg. Adri owned her and the money she earned. When His Imperial Majesty Emperor Rikan came down with the plague, one of her “stepsisters” implied she ought to volunteer for plague testing. A royal research team had come up with the cyborg draft, choosing a number every morning from the cyborgs of the Eastern Commonwealth, using them to test for an antidote. Cyborg’s were looked at as less than human. When Peony, the only human friend she had, came down with the plague, Adri had had enough. She volunteered Cinder for the draft. After all, she had no feelings, right? How was she going to survive? No one survives plague testing. Would she meet the prince again? What do you think?

Cinder didn’t remember anything before 11 years old . When she got to the research center, Dr. Erland began filling in some of the blanks.

Even though I knew where this was going, I could hardly wait to get there. I didn’t think I was going to be disappointed and I surely wasn’t. I thought it was a unique twist on a known storyline and great fun to read. Numerous times I found myself laughing out loud. I have a love/hate relationship with it being a series. I hate not knowing the end, even though I know it. Know what I mean, lol? I am eagerly awaiting the next book.

The Queen's ArmyIn this prequel to Scarlet, we’re introduced to the army Queen Levana is building, and one soldier in particular who will do anything to keep from becoming the monster they want him to be.

Is it an honor to serve in the Queen’s army or is it a form of slavery? Will he be able to keep his humanity or lose himself to them. Goosebumps broke out on my arms and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. Creepy, scary. Now, I MUST read Scarlet.

DINOSAURS EAT PARIS by Mark Douglas Stafford

The World Fair 1889 ~ an alternate history.

What a wonderfully fun cover.

I couldn’t help but pick it up when I saw it was FREE on fuonlyknew.

This is a fun book for all ages.

What do you think of the cover?

add-to-goodreads-button

(page 56% on Kindle)

“Look. Look. There are dinosaurs down there.

Can you believe it, Monsieur?
Dinosaurs. In Paris…”
~~~~~~~~~~~
(Book Beginnings)
Dinosaurs were the last thing on Dante Righi’s mind as Maria Shiaparelli tucked him into bed, with all the love and devotion of a mother…
It was a warm night in Paris the day before the Exposition Universelle, the World Fair of 1889, officially opened. The day before Professor Augusto Righi, Italy’s greatest living expreimental physicist, would unveil his creation to the world: the Finestra Temporale, a window in time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

MY REVIEW

Be sure and check out the author. His bio is almost as interesting as the book. LOL

I saw this FREE book on fuonlyknew and had to have it. Who doesn’t love dinosaurs?

Once I started reading, I could not put it down until I turned the last page!

This is a children’s book that can be enjoyed by all ages. I loved it. Dinosaurs Eat Paris was fast paced and easy to read, taking me from the 1889 World Fair in Paris, back in time to the Late Cretaceous period, about 70 million years ago.

The Exposition had all the latest inventions ~ Professor Augusto Righi’s time machine is only one of them.  Thomas Edison is there and so is Alexander Graham Bell, Annie Oakley and her husband Frank, along with Wild Bill Hickok,  are some of the most notable. The phone, cars, steam and electrical advances are showcased.

You can step from Paris to Egypt to Paraguay to Uruguay to Hawaii and so many other countries, but no one expected to be able to step back in time until the Professor and Thomas Edison disappeared through the Finestra Temporale, when the lightening struck. Maria jumped through, because she could not let the Professor go without her. The Professor will be very happy that she did. 🙂

I was looking for a different type of dinosaur video, but when I saw this, it cracked me up.

Did you laugh?

.

Everyone could see into the portal as if it was a movie, but is it a door instead? If they went in, could they come back out? Would the dinosaurs come with them? What do you think? 😉

It’s a wild ride and Dante is the hero. He’s just a boy, but he is super smart and feels responsible for ridding Paris of the dinosaurs that came through the doorway opened up by his father’s invention.

“What about the dinosaurs? Shouldn’t we do something before they eat Paris?” asked Annie Oakley.

Are scientists more open to the impossible? Were they able, along with Dante, and Annie and her gang able to come to the recuse because of their sense of adventure? They showed no fear, just did what needed to be done and seemed to have a grand old time doing it.

I loved riding with Dante and Annie ~ racing, taunting and distracting the dinosaurs. This would be a roundup of a different kind. As if that isn’t exciting enough, Mark takes it to a more adventurous level as they become “better acquainted with the dinosaurs.” I can see the adventure unfold as if it was a movie and Dante is the star.

I would love to tell you so much more, but the adventure is in the reading and I would spoil it for you if I shared.

It made me think of Night of the Museum, Jurassaic Park, even Star Wars.

This was a fantastic, fast paced romp through 1889 and the Cretaceous period and I would highly recommend it.

Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos 5 Stars – Would Buy It For Them (lol)

SYNOPSIS

It’s a warm night in Paris, the day before opening day. The day before Dante’s papa, Professor Augusto Righi, Italy’s greatest experimental physicist, will unveil his creation to the world: the Finestra Temporale, a window into time. But things don’t go according to plan, not at all. And it’s up to Dante to set things straight, if he can, before it’s too late, before dinosaurs eat Paris.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mark Douglas StaffordMark Douglas Stafford’s early years were spent building cubbyhouses, writing computer software on some of the world’s first computers and blowing up things in the garage.

After high school he began with a teaching degree and finished with a business degree. He established then sold his first business in 2005 after which he embarked on a career in senior management, running various technology companies in cutting-edge fields.

Mark writes particularly for the children’s and young-adult segment but his highly imaginative and original stories are enjoyed by readers of all ages.

He draws inspiration from the fables of Gabriel García Márquez, Oscar Wild and Hector Hugh Munro. As an aficionado of science fiction he is especially fond of the classics, like Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Series which harks back to a time when it was still fashionable to be optimistic about the future.

He is excruciatingly happily married and lives in the hills of northern Sydney, Australia with his wife and four rambunctious children, all of whom are fierce book critics; which helps.

Mark won ‘Highly Commended’ in The Port Stephens Examiner Literature Awards 2013 for his short story ‘The Interview’.
