EXCERPT:

So I’d never killed anyone, and it hadn’t been part of the deal. The mark had chosen me. I was stuck. Time to make lemonade out of lemons, and get the fuck out of here.

I led him up to the hotel room, and took a deep breath.

I can do this.

I glanced over my shoulder.

“This is my room,” I said breathlessly. “Well, mine and Lara’s, but she won’t be back for a while.” I added a little giggle at the end.

That was good, right?

I made the mistake of looking at him, and the smile slipped right off my face.

God, the way he was looking at me.

His dark grey eyes were completely focused on me, as if the hallway, the world around us, didn’t exist. He stared at me like I was some sort of combination of chocolate and wine, and he’d been denied both for a long damn time. That gaze spoke of things; of taking his time, of consuming me slowly, of making me feel him everywhere, from my head to my toes.

A frisson rippled over me.

His thumb rubbed my hand. “Open the door.”

For a second I forgot to breathe, and then my other hand was on the doorknob, turning it and letting us inside. He followed me in, closing the door behind him with his foot.

He grabbed me by the waist and pulled me to him. Then he wrapped his fingers around my chin, and lifted my face to his.

Oh, shit.

Then he was kissing me. Kissing me like he would consume me from the inside out. Heat poured through me, pooled in my belly, and then burned lower. He brushed my nipple with his thumb, and I gasped as heat struck my core.

Fuck.

They hadn’t said anything about him knowing how to kiss. About me wanting him. But they wouldn’t, would they? He was supposed to go for the blonde.

I growled.

Fuck the blonde. This mark was mine.

He laughed softly. “Have I got your attention now?”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

His hand trailed down my side. “I got the feeling there was something going on between you and your friend. A bet, perhaps? See who’s first to get a vampire up to the room?”

I blinked.

Close the fuck enough.

I let a shy smile come over my face. “You got us. It was a bet.”

“And you weren’t expecting to win?”

I shook my head.

“Why?” His hand cupped my face, sending sparks down me. “You’re beautiful, and so much more interesting than she is.”

He thought I was interesting?

“Because –” I bit my lip, stopping myself from telling him that he was supposed to like blondes.

God, what was wrong with me? I never slipped like this. It must have been the alcohol, or the heat.

“– because we both know I’m not.” I took a step back, slipping away from his touch. “Don’t we, John?”

Too late, I realized my tone had changed with that last part. He gave me a sharp glance, telling me he’d caught my fuckup. He’d seen that hint of my true self. But it wasn’t my fault. We’d gone off-script, and in those situations I always tended to sound more like me.

“Drop the act.” He pierced me with his gaze. “I don’t want to see the girl you pretend to be around your friend.”

“Then who do you want to see?” I asked. My voice was breathy; so much closer to the person I was pretending to be that it was a relief.

It sounded like I wanted him. Which was the goal, right? To get him in bed and stake him?

Except I was turned on by him. The arousal spreading through me felt like a low-grade fever. It was fucking with my head.

“You,” he replied. He reached out and skated his fingers down my neck, making me shiver. “The girl who just growled at me.”

Fuck.

Hello and thank you for hosting me today! I appreciate the opportunity to be featured on your blog. I always enjoy character interviews so I am sharing an interview with my Polar Day protagonist, Danny Fitzpatrick. I previously shared an interview with the antagonist Jamie Dzubenko over at UnabridgedAndra, so I thought I would ask Danny the same questions I asked Jamie.

Character Interview with Danny Fitzpatrick

What can you tell us about your family?

I don’t really have a family anymore. I was an only child who was raised by my mother, but she is dead. I used to be married, but my wife Caroline was murdered a few years ago in Chicago, my hometown. Those two were my family and they’re both gone. I do have a dog now though, a mutt named Sox. I guess he’s my family.

What about friends? Do you have a surrogate family?

I don’t know that I’d call her a surrogate family member but I am friends with my partner Tessa Washington. She’s a loner like me so we get along well together. I’m also friends with a librarian I met while working the Aleksei Nechayev case over the winter. Her name is Amanda. I guess you could say Amanda and I are friends with benefits.

What do you do for a living?

I’m a homicide detective for the Fairbanks police department.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

A cop

What are you passionate about?

Stopping murderers and other monsters

What do you hate?

Murderers and monsters. Namely, I hate Aleksei Nechayev and I hate the man who was my partner when I was a detective in Chicago. He’s the man who murdered my wife.

If you had to choose one word to describe yourself what would it be?

Bitter

If time travel was possible, would you go to the past or to the future?

To the past, but not too far back. I’d just go back to when Caroline was still alive. I’d make sure she wasn’t home the night my former partner came to our apartment and slit her throat.

Do you have a favorite book?

Not really. I’m not much of a reader.

How about music. What songs do you enjoy?

EXCERPT

Danny flipped through the channels, stopping when he came to a Seattle Mariners game that had gone in to extra innings. They were playing the White Sox in Chicago and Danny felt a slight tug at his heartstrings as the familiar sight of Cellular Field filled the flat screen television. The time difference made it difficult for him to catch Sox games live. It was a welcome surprise to find one that was lasting so long into the Chicago night that he could watch it live as it happened.

It was dark in Chicago, but of course the sun was still high in the sky here in this strange frontier he had chosen as his new home. He squinted from the sun beaming through the window and cursed himself for not shutting the blinds before he sat back down. Next time he got up for a beer he would need to do that.

Danny rested his hand on his dog’s head as he finished one beer and started another, the bottles now lining up on the end table beside him. His eyes grew bleary as Sox’s gentle snoring mingled with the sounds of the faraway baseball game. When yet another inning ended and the game went to a commercial, Danny closed his eyes and rested his head on the back of the couch.

The noise of the television grew fainter as he slipped into sleep and his mind flashed images of fangs and bloodless bodies in an endless landscape of snow. As Danny drifted farther into unconsciousness, the snow was overtaken by fire.

I have read the first book in the Dark Series by Madeline Pryce, Dark Carvings and loved it, so when I was given the opportunity to read, review and participate in the tour for Dark Secrets, I jumped on it. Madeline’s writing makes these novels outstanding paranormal romances that will linger long after the reading is done.

MY REVIEW

Spoiler alert: Dark Secrets, Book II in the Dark Series, Ella’s story continues.

Dark Secrets is a fast paced, action packed paranormal romance novel.

Ella had worked for The Shadow Agency as a vampire hunter. She had killed without thought.

Vampires and demons – bad. Humans – good.

Since her death by Lizbeth and her full change from human to vampire, her black and white world has gone gray. Her ability to tell the difference between them was growing dimmer. Now I was the enemy and on trial for my life.

I am the Vampire Queen, since I had killed Lizbeth, the Vampire Queen before me. I inherited all she owned. I now rule vampires and werewolves. The prophecy foretold that the vampire queen and demon son would wreak havoc and destruction and so far Micah and I had fulfilled it. We knew what they were really talking about is the child we were supposed to produce.

Ella and Micah had husband and wife difficulties, just like us mortals. She questioned – does he still want me, does he still love me? Vampires and demons are insecure too.

Madeline’s articulate descriptions of the characters allow me to see them in my mind, as if they are standing before me. Her ability to describe the surroundings and action run through my mind as if they are a scene in a movie.

I was pissed when Madeline made Ella a wuss. How can you take a badass hunter/killer and turn her into an insecure, doubting crybaby?

“…your emotions are all over the place, like you swallowed crazy pills or some shit. You aren’t my Ella. My Ella fights, kicks, punches and screams. She doesn’t cry….”

Pretty much covers my question. I guess if I went from a human, with my job hunting and killing vampires, to becoming a vampire queen with superpowers, I might be afraid and confused. Afraid of what I might do. Afraid I couldn’t control myself and my powers. Now she is forced to make a decision. She must act like a queen or step aside.

When Julian made his move – OMG I was blown away. It can’t be. So not what I anticipated. I am in a hurry to find out Micah’s reaction.

Madeline’s writing has me engrossed from page one. The action begins and never ends. My emotions run from happy and laughing to devastated and stunned. Just when I think I know what is coming, she throws a curve ball that makes me shake my head and say, “Well done, Madeline. You got me there.” I love when an author can add that extra something that leaves a lasting impression on me.

Holy fucking shit. Karma – the bitch – had cashed in my meal ticket and tried to send me to hell.

“If this is about leaving the toilet seat up, I’ll stop bitching about it.” “The toilet seat? What? Jesus fucking Christ . I just threw a fireball at you and you’re talking about the crapper?”

Madeline manages to weave some humor in with the dark and violent.

Book 1.5 of the Dark Series. Erotic, recommended for adults only.

While reading book I, I became very fond of Hannah. She is such a good person. I am so happy that Madeline felt the same way I did. Hannah’s story needed to be told. I knew it would be full of life – good, bad, tragic and blissful.

Madeline Pryce’s writing, I am sure, will be heating up the pages if not burning the book, or should I say melting my Kindle. I might need to have a fire extinguisher nearby. LOL

Hi Hannah. I am pleased to meet you. I have been waiting, ever so patiently, to read your story.

Hannah is a goodie two shoes and has an eidetic memory. Since being kidnapped and tortured by the vampire queen, Lizbeth, she is full of self disgust. She plays leap frog, jumping from guy to guy, popping pills and drinking booze, anything to escape the memories.

Dante, a shapeshifting six hundred pound lion, had rescued her six weeks ago. He was an Adonis and fifteen years older than her. He is tall and powerful. When he walks into a room, he gives off such intense vibes they demand your attention. The age difference kept them apart, but she could not deny her attraction. He is the only one who could make her feel safe. For now, she will have to settle for being best friends.

Dante is a man I can love. A man who will hold your hair out of the way while puking, after fucking someone else, well, what more can I say?

Hannah had been rescued, but there was still someone left, someone who meant her great harm, Mr. Restricted, her stalker. Who is he? Maybe what is he would be more appropriate.

OMG The car. Who’s that knocking on the window? TERROR Hannah tried to make herself small, curling tightly into the seat. Her eyes dart back and forth, frantically looking around, desperate for help. She flashes back to the pain and torture that haunts her since the kidnapping. She is shaking, calling out to Ella, her sister, for help. Where Hannah is sunshine and flowers, Ella is darkness and death.

“I didn’t mean to hit you so hard.”
“I should’ve been able to block you. I didn’t expect you to get all she-woman on my ass and kick my butt.”

“I broke it?”

The dialogue is quick and witty. At times I felt a chuckle or outright laugh escape as I read along.

“Ella, please tell me that we don’t look that pathetic,” Micah said in self disgust.

“…you’ve already broken the man’s nose – the date can only go uphill from there.”

When Dante said, “This is the worst first date I’ve every had,” I laughed right along with him.

I knew Hannah’s story would be a good one. I love badass Ella, but I knew Hannah had a life changing story. I wanted to see her grow and develop into the strong woman I knew she would become. Madeline Pryce’s writing can be down right gross and disgusting, but it keeps me on my toes. It went from killing and savagery to light and whimsical with witty dialogue and funny moments that kept me engrossed. The novel is smoking hot, but there is so much more going on than just sex. Madeline’s superb writing and storytelling ability always leave me Craving more.

“Oh man, oh man,” I say as I rub my hands together with a wicked grin on my face. Now it’s time to find out what Ella is up to.

Brand new covers for Lancaster House and The Middle Aisle!

Lancaster House was the first Taylor Dean book that I read. I loved it, but when I read The Middle Aisle, she won me over for life. It has one of the best endings I have every read. Even now, months later, it pops into my mind off and on.

I have always thought her covers are very original and I love the painterly effect.

Buuuuut. I totally agree with her decision to change them. I think these beautiful and fantastic new covers are going to scream from the shelf, “PICK ME! PICK ME!” What do you think?

My Review for Lancaster Hous e / My Review for The Middle Aisle

I love my OLD covers. (Pictured on the left.) I really do. They’re different from the norm and that’s why they captured my attention.For Lancaster House, I liked the idea of a hand reaching out from the grave. It seemed appropriate to the story; Andre reaches out to Zoe from beyond the grave. It was Carrie-like and kind of creepy.

There’s just one problem.

This is not a horror novel. Not at all. This is a paranormal romance. People who like horror are drawn to the cover and are sadly disappointed when they realize it’s a romance.

People who love paranormal romance are turned off by the cover because it looks too creepy. In other words, the cover just wasn’t working.

I love The Middle Aisle cover because it matched Lancaster House so perfectly. And part of the story takes place in Monterey, California. Monterey is known for its Cypress trees. The tree on the cover of The Middle Aisle reminded me of a Cypress tree and seemed perfect.

But, if the right people aren’t reading the first book, no one will ever read the second one no matter what the cover looks like!

Bam! Decision made!

It was time for new covers for Lancaster House and The Middle Aisle! I love the new covers because they speak so perfectly as to what’s on the inside..

About C. David Murphy

Being raised in the mountains of North Carolina had a special influence on me. The dreams that invented these stories started there. Even at an early age, being all of six, my teachers saw the capacity in me to create stories with such depth – that they seemed to marvel at the tales which I wrote for my class assignments. While my devotion to and inspiration for writing continued to be strong through my teen age years, there was a force equally strong bearing it’s influence. Parents! My Father in particular. Who was, understandably, not “over the moon” with the idea of his son pursuing a career as perilous and uncertain as a writer.

And so, finally I embarked on a financial career. With my bachelor’s degree in accounting, I’ve spent the majority of my Adult life in both the retail and manufacturing industries. But I never stopped writing. Because that’s what and who I am. Alexa’s mother admonished her for leaving Nelly behind when she came to rescue her from prison. It was Nelly they were really after and I had left her alone at Two Rivers.

The only purpose I had in life was to protect her. I am a Sun Warrior, one of a kind. My monster within loves to kill – actually revels in it and I would do whatever it takes to keep Nelly safe.

Nelly is one of a kind too, a vampire and a searcher She is able to search others thoughts. But the real reason they would kill her, she is half Lamia. She is considered a danger to everyone.

The King was responsible for the fate of the villagers in Two Rivers. He kept them drugged and ignorant of the fate awaiting them. He was using them as a blood factory. The depth of the King’s evil was black and ugly. The King had arranged for my mother to be imprisoned and I wanted him dead.

Everyone thought the Prophecy meant me, but I knew it meant Nelly. The Prophecy said Nelly would save the King’s captives, but die in the process.

Nelly was called in to see the King. She knew she was in trouble. He is a highly skilled searcher. She is barely able to control herself. She couldn’t give away she was as powerful a searcher as he was. That would mean her death.

Nelly was surprised when he asked about Alexa. Was this about her? He told her Alexa’s crimes were treason and murder. Before Nelly could stop herself, she spit on his shoes. She felt such a red-hot anger, she lost all control. Alexa was not a traitor.

As the King grabbed Nelly’s hand to search her, she turned her powers loose. The King was thrown from her. As she searched him she saw a vision. She saw him dead. Alexa’s sword had slain him and Alexa lay dead beside him.

She screamed and her power threw everyone against the walls.

The Queen finally got her attention and said to put the King asleep, like the others, or they wouldn’t be able to escape.

Alexa and Kayden were racing to get back to Nelly. They had to stop for gas and when they got out to pump it, Kayden pulled something from his pocket and told Alexa Happy Birthday. It was the most beautiful ring Alexa had ever seen.

” “I – I belong to you.” Alexa said to him, her beautiful lion. Even her monster was quiet.”

Nelly gathered, with her mind, the few she could take, as they made their escape. When the Lamia attacked and killed Daniel, she lost all control. Her rage could not be held back. It flowed out to the Lamia, killing them all and she absorbed their energy.

The van for their escape was near, but Nelly directed them away from it. Even though it was night, she saw the sun and went towards it. Something was calling to her, but she didn’t know what.

“Stop” Alexa yelled at Kayden, but she didn’t know why.

She was being drawn to Nelly. They had a bond that demanded they find each other.

When she saw them standing in the road, she realized Tommy was holding Nelly. Alexa knew what she needed, so she proceeded to cut her arm and offered it to the unconscious Nelly. With no warning Nelly attacked her.

Alexa didn’t think things could get any worse. But she was so very wrong.

5 STARS – Would Buy It For Them (lol)

H. D. Gordon is creating new covers as I write this review. I already liked them, now I think they are even more amazing, bringing together the entire series.

I raced through the pages, beginning to end. Alexa’s story kept getting better and better. I was waiting, holding my breath, for what would happen next.

It was a punch to the gut when Nelly killed and fled. Not sweet Nelly. I thought she was going to be the heroine.

Alexa had been pushed to her limits. She was distraught. She would do whatever it took to save Nelly but she was paralyzed by her loss. Her love was selfless.

Amazing descriptions of the supernatural characters and their environment. I love this series so much, I cannot find the words to describe how I feel as I read along.

I raced through the last pages, not realizing I was coming to the end. What’s going to happen. No, it can’t be. WTF.

I sat there with my mouth hanging open, thinking, now what. My heart fell. Then, I thought, okay. There’s one more book and I have to go get it. NOW!!!

Review of the middle aisle by taylor dean

“Riveting conclusion” is so appropriate. I know sometimes the second book can be a letdown, but this knocked my socks off. I was racing through the pages, unable to put it down. Incredibly written. Psychologically and emotionally draining.

. The Middle Aisle (Lancaster House)

Zoe had moved into the Victorian House determined to renovate it and sell it. What she found instead, was a love so strong, that even the supernatural barriers in front of her and Andre could not keep her from his arms.

Dr. Channing woke Zoe with a full tray of breakfast. Since being pregnant, she ate more than ever. She hated being bedridden, but loved her little package.

She admitted to Dr. Channing that Andre had been a figment of her imagination.

Dr. Channing wanted her to tell her story from the time she had escaped from the hospital. She told the doctor that she knew Andre would be waiting for her. She told him, that as she raced toward the closed front door of the house, it opened by itself. She jumped into Andre’s arms and poof – she vanished into thin air.

The house had been rented, while Zoe spent six months in Serenity Hills Psychiatric Hospital. The renters corroborated her story.

As Andre held her, they watched Dr. Channing walk through the house. Andre swore he would never leave her again. When the Dr. left, he wished them happiness. Why would he do that, if he believed Andre wasn’t real?

As they kissed, Zoe tried to crawl inside Andre’s skin. There was still a barrier between them. She desperately wanted to be one with him.

Dr. Channing asked the neighbors if he could put up a camera, aimed at Zoe’s house. He wanted to prove to Zoe there was no Andre. He felt she was playing him. And what about Dr. Channing? Wasn’t something wrong with him? Was he overly obsessed with Zoe?

Andre said he wanted to take her down the middle aisle – get married. He was changing because of her love, his curse was lifting. Zoe was so in love with Andre, she didn’t want to live without him. Was he really turning human? Would they be able to connect and lift the barrier between them?

Does she really believe the baby is Andre’s?

5 STARS – Would Buy It For Them (lol)

Was he a ghost? A vampire? Was he even real? The story will have you so engrossed, that it won’t matter what Andre really is. He will win you over.

I felt it was such a tragic love story, that I wanted to cry with Zoe, as she strived to create a real life with Andre. Their love was so great, I could only hope that it would break all the barriers that the supernatural had imposed on them. I loved the characters, and even Dr. Channing won me over in the end.

The psychological thrill ride had me questioning everything. The plot was so unique and unforeseen, that I was constantly surprised.

The ending left me stunned, I smiled as the tears ran down my face. It was one of the best endings of any book I have read and left me with a warm, fuzzy feeling that lingered long after I had finished the book.

Fanged Mania #6 – Giveaway/Review – Being Mrs Dracula by Faith Marlow

When Van Helsing died, he left a diary. That, in turn, led to more diaries by the Mrs. Dracula‘s. The story is told from the wives perspective.

Valeria’s father aligned their family with Count Dracula by Valeria’s marriage to him. The Count was a good man, but he scared her very much. He had courted her for a short time, so they weren’t strangers when the wedding finally took place. The sex was more wonderful than she could imagine. Afterwards, she lay with her head on his chest and listened to his heart beat.

As Hungary and the Turks fought, he had to go into battle. When he returned at the first of the year, he was a different man. Rumors that he slaughtered thousands of men women and children ran rampant.

She feared him, but couldn’t fight the attraction she had for him. He had changed. She touches him and he feels so cold. His teeth seem longer and he is stronger, even though she never sees him eat. The light shines on his red eyes.

She had been ill, but recovered while he was gone. When he had come home, she seemed to get ill again. She also noticed, she had another “love” bite. It seemed as they made love, he could read her mind. He fed off her, which was her illness. She has such love for him, that she doesn’t mind. He is now a man-creature, who comes home from battle in the middle of the night and enters through the window.

The servants were terrified and many of them fled, but she didn’t care. Valeria and the Count fed off each other, sharing their life force – blood. She loved him, even though she thought she would die because of him. Even she thought herself odd.

When he left with the peasants, she realized she had been abandoned. She sent the rest of the servants away and she was now all alone. She would kill herself before she would let the Turks take her.

As she dies, she is reborn. Like her husband, she is now a vampire.

She is vicious in her revenge of the Turks looting her home. She tells of her anger when she is abandoned by Vlad. She rampages through her home, and the carnage and savage killing of the Turks are beyond description.

After two years, she takes up her pen and begins her diaries.

5 STARS – Would Buy It For Them (lol)

A vampire book like no other. It is told in the form of diaries, and begins with his first wife, Valeria. Needless to say, he is immortal, so one wife would never be enough. Vlad’s callousness, cruelty, and betrayals are so selfish and self-centered, it makes you wonder how the wives are able to keep their sanity. Or do they?

The story is told from the wives points of view. The confusion, loneliness, hatred, grief, love, pain, and betrayal they experience will leave you feeling emotionally drained.

When I first opened the book, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it. I’m not huge on books written as diaries. It didn’t take long for me to become totally engrossed in it. You must keep reading or you will miss a truly unique story of a love like no other.

I fell in love with Valeria. Even though she is a vampire and has the capacity to be truly vicious and savage, her love encompasses so much more than she thought she would ever be able to give. The horrible things she goes through would make you think she would be incapable of what she does at the end of the story. The ending blew me away and I can hardly wait to read the sequel. I hope you are a fast writer Faith. lol

Faith Marlow takes vampires to a whole new level. I never saw where this book was going and I am so glad, because the surprise was well worth waiting until the last page to discover. I loved where she went with the book and the journey was well worth traveling.

As I sit here writing the review, all I can think of is WOW. I am still caught up in the story, trying to think how to describe it to you, so that you will be sure to pick up your copy and enjoy Valeria’s story.
